I'm not sure if it was to check the age of the horse, but the quality of the teeth themselves. if the animal had poor teeth, it couldn't eat properly and was probably unhealthy. Age could be a reason, too.

@AngelusSpkGrrl It's an old saying...back when horses were sold/traded more commonly, it was a standard practice to check the inside of their mouths to (somehow?) determine that they were healthy enough for sale.

Thus, if someone were to gift you a horse, it would be rude to check it out, because it's a gift for fuck's sake.

Basically, the phrase means that it's unwise or improper to second guess or scrutinize things that fall into your lap or are otherwise acquired for free.

@redminus Lol I'm glad somebody else actually knows what this means. My gpa told me what it ment when I was a wi lad, I figured everyone new. A young strong horse will have better and obviously healthier teeth, which is easy to tell by lifting their lips and looking in their mouth.

You know what I love about Showtime? You guys don't sacrifice art for profit. You *make* art for profit, and you do it with integrity. If other networks took a lesson or two from you, we'd have much better TV all around.

Yeah so true. Showtime, HBO & AMC. I can't even take regular TV seriously anymore.

But regular TV gets ratings. The sad truth is most people would rather watch Jersey Shore or some trashy reality show than this.

And then of course there's the burdensome FCC forcing all shows to limit their creativity.

So it's just a good thing we have SOME place to watch good shows. And these are excellent shows. They could be Oscar Winning movies.
