God, it's wonderful to see the speed and flow that Todd maintains throughout this program...it allows the jumps to just SOAR. Yes,there a lot of back crossovers and the transitions and entries to jumps are simpler than what you might see under the COP but I would gladly trade a thousand labored step sequences, awkward, slow spin positions or frantic, point building, arm waving "choreography" for the pure edges and sense of glide Todd achieves here. To me this is the embodiment of the "freeskate".
He never had much spark or flair, but he did pull it together here, and he certainly deserved to win. The one thing he lacked, for whatever reason, was a bit of style and abandonment.
I remember that Urmanov beat out Stojko in 94. Thats why i put that there.
And I think my parents recorded the Grand Prix that Urmanov won. On the same tape as this competition. When urmanov was on i could see it but, he was much more inconsistent in terms of the skating. Eldredge, while title wise not as decorated, was at least consistent. Plus, I know this is personal opinion, but I always looked forward to seeing Eldredge's Triple Axel vs. Urmanov's.
@grafgirl, you're entitled to your opinion but I respecrfully disagree. This is one of the best long programs I've ever seen and he was quite consistent in medaling at World Championships during his career (91,95.96,97,98). Candeloro never even won a world title and maybe Stojko was a better jumper but Stojko was nowhere near Eldredge in terms of artistry.
Todd Eldredge proved to be the Gold Medal Winner at the 1996 World Figure Skating Championships. He had all the terrific jumps and the artistry was first rate!

One of the weakest skaters to ever win a World title. Has nowhere near the jumping ability and power of Stojko or Kulik, or the artistry of Urmanov, or oginality of Candelero. Was dominated by those other men throughout most of his career.
@nwsausuke1 Urmanov won the Olympicss and the Grand Prix final the 1st and 3rd biggest events. Eldredge only won 1 Worlds, the 2nd biggest event. Urmanov was better at winning big titles. Urmanov was also more of a threat when he skated well than Todd.

@mlc2005 You make some valid points..but I definitely think his jumps had abandon. That opening triple Axel is absolutely spectacular.

Omg I was going to say... Was that Brian Boitano? I'm proud of myself for knowing his voice. He sounds like John Ritter to me.
But yaa Todd is so beautiful here. I love the first jump where he just flies right at the camera.

Is that Brian Boitano's voice along with Dick Button?

Stojko and Kulik, I can see the arguement....Candeloro and Eldredge were similar to me, but I can't see Urmanov ahead of him, especially AFTER 1994.
