  • the only thing weirder than his style is his choice of cymbals, K Dark Series, Constantinople and A Custom....yet they somehow work together. Hes a genius

  • NOBODY.. NOBODY has ever had his tense of timing on the drums. You can argue any other aspect of his playing but not that.

  • Fidgity style? Rolls couldn't be more both precise and fluid. And you don't even want to get me started about "the groove". Keith is probably one of the funkiest precision cats, that hasn't been thrown into the "gospel drummer" category! lol! Love the "gospel drummer" cats, but I love Carlock, Gadd and Erskine, equally as much :-)

  • It's true.....drums can sing! Genius....

  • pause, play, and push 2 repeatedly

  • I saw him at the St. Michelle Winery with the dan and was blown away on the first song, Royal Scam. Un believeable!

  • Very original style. Doesn't focus on sounding fast or having "flash". He just plays the pocket, syncopates well and uses dynamics to his advantage very well. Usually drummers tend to have one one sound setting when playing (loud) but he does not. A great model to drummers. Playing fast is not the only aspect to drumming. Timing and syncopation are crucial.

  • @gdman4527 Great comments and great insight gdman4527. I own Keith's video and you can really see what you're talking about on that video. He usually starts his solos with a groove and then lets his ideas flow from that groove. No matter what else he chooses to play from there, the groove is not lost. Great way to practice in our rehearsal studios.

  • Very true, Alice! Keith is a great and humble person, on top of being a major kick ass drummer. I had the privilege of playing drums and graduating high school with Keith. He is still the same person he was back then. Fun, funny and amazingly talented! However, sorry he is MARRIED to an awesome lady! i am sure both are flattered :) cheers, Ryan

  • more chops than mr miyagi.

  • Sweet. I could listen to this guy play all day. Love his style. Love the sound of his kit, and he's got serious chops with that traditional grip left hand being so strong. Great stuff!!

  • Nice to hear a PROPER bass drum sound ! along with everything else good he has going on. Cool !

  • that left hand has it's own post code D:

  • he is swimming man!!! great!!

  • style!and character!

  • at 0:48 thats a six stroke roll correct?

  • HOLY SHITTTTTTTTT

  • man

  • To all those commenting on his looks: actually, he is quite handsome. He was on my flight from Las Vegas to San Diego two weeks ago and I can assure you this DVD is not representative of his current look. This combined with his amazing talent and obvious passion for his craft PLUS the references everywhere about what a kind, non ego-driven soul he is add up to what I would call the perfect example of what any woman could ever hope to find in a man.

  • One of my favorites. Pocket pocket...Loved his work with Fagen and especially on Tal's album. That was some shit there. She's spooky good.

  • Yes, he's amazing. I enjoy his chops.

  • I was at forks drum store today and I was having trouble deciding whether to buy remo smooth white emperors or a keith carlock dvd. I went with the drum heads...and...I think I messed up.

  • @MrJustSomeTits Get the DVD. It's amazing

  • i cant stop looking at his right hand

  • The five folks that disliked this had to have been doing it sarcastically.

  • damn, only 3 cymbals...now i feel stupid for having 7 that i don't even know how to use.

  • Ive never heard such a funky groove, AHHH So many ghost notes!!! I think I could listen to it forever!

  • This is music !!! No gym like someone !!!

  • @jamirox81 penis.

  • Ugly player, although just listening and shutting your eyes sends you off someone.

    He's a freak of nature.

  • @zac23godwin Look up some recent vids of Keith, he looks much better.

  • @Cosbibi saw him with steely dan last night and i was like WOH lost some weight!

  • Amazingly unique style

  • Hey Folks. . You can see and hear Keith in action on the new RUDDER live DVD. over 2 hours of footage, and a big keith drum solo. Four Camera shoot, mixed by nic hard. nineteeneight (dot) com

  • I love those double stroke phrased as swiss triplet rolls!!

  • kinda looks like chris farley

  • hes got a freaking weird technique but i guess it works for him cuz hes freaking amazing

  • those hands........

  • That has got to be embarrassing for Travis Barker...................

  • Mr. Carlock has very solid technique, and to develop that technique takes dedication and devotion. Let people compare him to anyone on the planet..but in the end, everybody has their own drumming voice to contribute to the musical conversation... I like what Mr. Carlock is saying here with his masterful playing!

  • Man....FANTASTIC!!!!

  • Just perfect drummer.....MFER!!!

  • I love Keith Carlock as a drummer, but everytime I watch this guy I can't stop thinking about how much he looks like a lesbian. Am I the only person who sees this?

  • @Illadelphism I kind of agree here, but he looks quite a bit different now, he's lost a ton of weight.

  • @Illadelphism you are right hahah

  • @Illadelphism I can see it in this video, but after he lost weight he doesn't. I know him and talk to him, when he is'nt drumming, he doesn't look like one at all.

  • he's amazing...a perfect mix between steve gadd's groovy and hooky chops and the precision, speed and control of buddy rich's playing.

  • @pitecantropus lol he's nothin like either of those players

  • Keith Carlock. You really are summin' else

  • Awsome double stroke roll by Keith wow he is awsome

  • Dynamic.

  • Haha, his high hat stand is hitting his ride all over the place, sounds kinda cool.

  • i love this guy's left hand! I also like how he hits the bass drum with an open fashion to let the bass drum resonate! Sick ass player!

  • Definitely influenced by Gadd I'd say

  • @TheDawnFader guess you could say "reminds me of gadd" or "there are some similarites...". gadd is older, but I'm convinced that developing one's style happens before gaining knowledge in all the music variety. he might easily never have heard of gadd when he already played like that. if it's just an assumption (not some interview result), i guess you might be jumping to conclusions. but you may be right on the other hand ;)

  • @odolany have you ever been accused of stealing music from authors you never heard of or something? ;)

  • love the grip in the right hand

  • Nice sound, nice playing. Inspirational drummer!

  • More chops than a butcher.

  • Go keith... com on who coms up with a solo like that aye aye no one!!

  • I think this is 20 zildjian k custom dry light ride but I'm not shure

  • @ironcobra42 It's a 21" K Custom Special Dry Ride

  • What is that ride on the left side?

  • Comment removed

  • @morvetti eh noo ur shit nd u no naatin! reply if ur a faggot

  • @B00MER182 HI!

  • Djajzzis :D

  • Those drums must hate him

  • travis barker iz beter! coz he lik sold waay more cds !!

  • @B00MER182 I don't know whether to laugh at your sarcasm, or to cry at your stupidity.

  • @Legile17

    He's a troll, leave it.

  • I get this weird Steve Jordan vs. Peter Erskine vs. Steve Gadd vibe about Carlock. I love all of them equally. Carlock is so heavy on that pocket groove.

  • This guy has more groove, lyricism, creativity, dynamics, phrasing and chops in one finger than most musicians have in their entire body.

  • @BeatProfessor and he is the most comical drummer around......

  • Man, it's so sharp. Funky, light....great dynamics...and a perfect tempo all the way through. Love his hi hat foot which is unshakeable no matter what else he's doing.

  • Nice funky feeling on that kick drum.! I feel it.

  • My drum teacher taught this guy. Incredible.

  • has everyone (who likes this video) seen the whole thing on drummerworld? truely amazing rhythm. and just enviable drumming. And then the buzz is killed when I read about all the Barker fans who comment on EVERY bozzio/carlock/chambers/royster/cobham/smith/pridgen/etc video on youtube. There is a place for your comments. Dont ensue or bespeak your arguments of TB anywhere but his videos. you are demeaning all the credit that is due to the Drummer's elite. Like KC.

  • Mo.

  • FREEKin.

  • fo.

Looks like he left his cymbals out in a Phoenix hail storm hahaha.

  • Great drummer, total feel and finesse!

  • man, i cant descripe how sick this is.... this i sooo sick!!

  • very good!

  • astounding groove/feel and sounds/chops, but not a 'musical' solo, just random groove and stuff thrown in -- I was waiting for it to go somewhere. OK dogs, unleash the hate now.

  • awesome! i love that he doesn't have a double pedal either!! not that there is anything wrong with a double bass pedal. but it is nice to see someone not use one every once in a while.

  • My aunt is good friends with him, he went to clinton high school in mississippi and marched snare (an awesome band in mississippi) and he graduated and marched NORTH TEXAS drumline! My aunt says he the nicest dude ever. He sets the standards for a drummer in my opinion

  • this music is defiantly my cup of tea but just watching this guy is entertaining and inspiring +1 for him

  • Nice!

  • You can learn to be good, but not this good. There is something in your soul that drives you to this point. You are born with the gift. He is amazing beyond words. Truly.

  • weird

  • @TheMASDrummer

Where are the uploads to prove it?

  • One of the most ugly to see drummers, but one of the most effective!! :D he's completely awesome, also if his grip is one of the weirdest ever!! both hands are totally sick!

  • @dagostinoification a what now?

  • This is some of the most inventive, and only in my opinion, best, drumming I've ever heard. But even if you don't like it, you have to admit the coordination stuff is extremely inventive. And that middle cymbal is my dream cymbal!! Might be gettin it in a week.

  • @Jordainio what is it?

  • @Jordainio

    what cymbal is it???

  • I first met Keith in 1993 when he played with Andy Timmons for the first time at a Guitar Center gig with Paul Reed Smith and Bugs Henderson. His playing has steadily improved since then, and he was a good drummer even then. For my money one of the top 10 drummers performing today.

  • one of the best sounding bass drums for this generation.

  • crazy

  • steely dan.nothin better.

  • Incredible drummer.

  • Outstanding!!

  • his face at 0:08 makes me not inspired

    it makes me sick

  • @TheMASDrummer

    You are probably a twat

  • @TheMASDrummer Strange comment. I think you have a few screws loose, dude.

  • @TheMASDrummer not inspired? .. prolly coz u look like that when u wet ur bed..

  • @TheMASDrummer you're a fuck

  • @TheMASDrummer show us your face!!!have you one?

  • @TheMASDrummer

Good go vomit someplace. You are a little child and your opinion is shit!

  • damn nice sound

  • I think part of the appeal is watching him. He looks like he's ghosting.

  • he plays with the heart, but only cuz he already went trough all the brain work, and certainly he still is short, like any good musician would say....say jazz is not emotional its intellectual, yes but, what are the notes on paper without clave or swing? nothing but ink, so, learn your shit and play. like tha man Carlock up there.

  • If he didn't look like such a clown, I'd be more inclined to like him.

    Unfortunately that's not the case.

  • @Paitsch lol

  • I've never liked Keith that much, always thought he's a great player but nothing more. But this video pretty much opened my mind for him. This is so far the best drum solo I've seen.

  • Laying it DOWN!

  • Holy shit-stick!

  • In my opinion Keith is something else; He's a very creative and musical thinker with a fantastic swing and groove, not to mention great time and accuracy. On top of that I think he has a great sound and THE BEST bass drum sound I've ever heard and felt :)

  • Simply fantastic.

  • I can appreciate his drumming skills and "power" behind the kit but he is kind of difficult to watch. Too "choppy."

  • @180was fuck off

  • @sonortubelug OVER-RATED or should I say x-rated.

  • He's on the road with John Mayer now.

  • Are those single or double stroke rolls on the snare?

  • @tcslick420 Sound like double to me.

  • I met Keith about 2 1/2 years ago after he finished a midnight set with Wayne Krantz 2:00 am in the morning in N.Y.C, I thanked him for inspiring novice drummers like me. We spoke about areas of mutual inspiration. He was a real gentleman and very tall. I'm 6'2' and we were looking eye to eye. He's got real natural talent. Way to go Keith!!!

  • I went to high school with him and remember watching him in the band. His talent goes back to his childhood. The high school band always had a special thing for him to do in performances. He also was hand picked by the head band director, Mr. David Wilson (now the band director for Ole Miss) to perform with him in his band. Thank Mr. Tyson for helping to guide Keith on his way. Yay Clinton, MS!!!!!

  • he holds the drumstick in the weird way

  • @skerskies he's playing traditional. its not weird, just another style. i play traditional.

  • One of the best "young" drummer

  • @Borsch99 you know he was born in 1971 right?

  • one of my favorites, for sure

  • his solo has a "DRUM LINE" feel.. not surprising though, as he's from DRUM LINE discipline...

    AWESOME DRUMMER!

  • Great solo. Unusual way he strikes the ride cymbal.

  • hes one of the last of the real drummers

  • this guys got some amazing foot work!!!!!! now thats talent!! lol

  • this guy Keith has some incredibly smooth double stroke rolls as well as stick control. And Boy,, does he love what he does

  • He has the craziest form. its dopetastic.

  • Keith epitomises the aim of the artist here. Freedom of expression.

  • I'm so not surprised that he's taking the stage with Steely Dan, Sting and John Mayer. What a great talent!

  • What a beast I saw him originally take a cut at steve gadds run on Aja and have been very impressed

  • Has anyone tried out his signature sticks?

  • this guy is a plug

  • This is maybe the best drummer i`ve ever seen!! :D

  • He's fuckin amazingly good...but he looks like a little emo bitch with his hair and earrings and eye make-up

  • Seriously does it get any smoother and more professional than this?

  • Very musical cat!!! Never a boring solo from him!!! I hate solos, but him i can listen to all the time and be totally inspired. He can do it all, he can lay it down like no one else and play the perfect part for a song.

  • he got soul ..

  • How can you mention KC and Travis Barker in the same sentence - except possibly to demonstrate extreme opposite ends of the musical spectrum?

  • @Creaulx Dude, I've been dealing with Travis Barker fans every time I watch a good drummer on youtube. It's hilarious. They seem to be everywhere, and seem to think he's the best drummer who ever lived. I don't get them...they don't get out much. Barker couldn't touch this solo here.

  • Not all drummers are as intelligent as Keith Carlock. I thought it was fascinating listening to him discussing his thinking behind some of the original sounding grooves he came up with for The Dan's latest album. This guy is the thinking man's drummer. Probably wouldn't have lasted long in the studio with Walter Becker if he wasn't...

  • @Creaulx travis barker isn't so bad. perfect time, writes good parts, great feel for his genre. just not much to learn from him.

  • This guy is the shit.

  • keith is one of those drummers who is able to take a shit while playing drums and still play like this

  • @cleanupbigfoot He also looks like he's taking a shit, considering the face he makes.

  • Very, very nice Keith

  • does anybody knows which hihat he ist playing at this video?

  • i just shit my pants

  • man, this guy is bernard purdie on steroids

  • One of the most interesting techniques ever, and yet so smooth in a way. Great fingers!

  • He's performing in the Birmingham Branch of PMT on Tuesday 16th March, doors 7:30pm.

Be there, or be very square indeed!!!

  • i have my ticket for the one in manchester!!!

  • keiths coming to england on 17th of march :)

  • naaa fam tooooo siik -kaneo

  • mean!

  • great!!!!! muy bueno, saludos desde Argentina!!

  • what an amazing solo!! i really loved it!!

  • I changed my set up so that my snare drum and rack toms are like Keith's. I must admit that to most fellow
