  • The only thing I disagree with him is, around @18:00 mark when he stated that once people become aware of how unsustainable their eating habits are, then they will stop eating that way...or something to that effect.

I don't have that much faith in people...sorry. They will still eat what ever is easiest to gobble down the fastest, whatever is advertised to them, and whatever attracts their taste buds

  • It's more about the content in between the Uh's. Everybody needs time to regroup their thoughts. The only difference between him and, let's say, a republican candidate is that he actually says meaningful things in between brief pauses.

  • Wow these top comments are terrible. How about instead of talking about medial presentation flaws or telling us about how you are in the top 1% income and are somehow immune from this, we talk about the points Pollan is trying to get across about how our current american industrial food system is totally fucked. Its unhealthy, unsustainable, killing our soils rivers and polluting our air, and has put a veil between us and our food. Do you know where your chicken nuggets come from? EAT LOCALLY

  • Average poster on this thread: 'Blah, blah, blah, I'm educated, blah, blah, me, blah, blah, smarter, blah blah, I'm a fucking asshole who thinks my diploma from the local community college makes me a better pundit.'

  • "Meat is why so many americans are facing health problems and obesity now"

I thought it was because we are consuming 2-6 times the daily amount of sodium, processed sugar, hydrogenated oils, and eating too much fried food.

Stay stupid self-righteous vegans and vegetarians.

  • @jking21701 he's not vegan or vegetarian and just as the sodium, sugar, etc you mentioned have been up in consumption so has our meat intake

  • @jking21701 Well said!

  • "Meat is why so many americans are facing health problems and obesity now"

  • If you choose to be a vegan or vegetarian out of a moral compelling, more power to you. If you believe it is healthier than a well rounded diet that includes lean meat and fish you are sadly fucking mistaken.

  • Will we ever have a food revolution?

  • @dongjie666 He is not a doctor. Only has his Master's. It was just a slip.

  • this particular video is still hilarious to me as an educated individual.

  • @h2onitro

I agree with you. It seems as though we're in the minority. I guess that's why the minority of Americans actually make money and live well. Cheers!

  • who can vote this video down?

  • @aleterra - anyone with an education votes this down.

  • @h2onitro Please elaborate, because your statement is obviously wrong. (I have education and voted this video up, so many other colleagues)

  • @aleterra My statement was an opinion. Opinions are subjective.

  • @h2onitro I respect your opinion. I just was expecting to hear what you think.

  • @aleterra I was just being contrarian. Frankly, I don't really care about Pollan. I had to watch this for a class a few years ago and began posting to get a rise out of everyone. They took the bait. You didn't - kudos.

  • @aleterra only vegetarian pricks

  • @AngryTypingGuy27 He needs toastmasters

  • @AngryTypingGuy27 i enjoy his speaking minus the um um um um. parts which would cut the time of this video in half.

  • Mr. Pollan is doing a good thing by trying to educate people on what they are eating, but not telling the whole, more important truth. Grass fed beef IS NOT sustainable.. Thank goodness Dr. Oppenlander is bringing awareness to this FACT in his lectures and book, Comfortably Unaware. It's sad everyone is so quick to believe that it is, but in fact the agricultural business is destroying the environment and eating meat is not healthy - proven facts.

  • Comment removed

  • riccer24,

"not telling the whole, more important truth."

Did you read the book? What did Pollan say that is not true?

"Grass fed beef IS NOT sustainable"

Well, my family has been sustaining it on our farm for 6 generations. The cows live on the land. How is this not sustainable?

    "eating meat is not healthy"

Well the current line of homosapiens have been doing it for about 50,000 years. We have physical characteristics that are ONLY found in animals that eat meat. What is your response to that?

  • Comment removed

  • @kaljerico1Dr. Oppenlander is talking about "Sustainable" on a global scale –we use land, water, and pollute air at an irreversible level providing resources for the 70 billions animals raised, slaughtered, and eaten each year. My grandparents also raised animals on their own land 100 years ago, before the earth had 6.8 billion people to feed, and now with less than 2% of the population involved with farming but are using most of our planet’s resources.

  • @riccer24

This planet can not sustain 6.8 billion humans. You are living in a fantasy world.

  • @riccer24

Ultimately it's not a question of whether or not it's ethical to eat meat because it's part of our omnivorous biology. Anthropologists who've studied the rapid evolution and development of our brain and thinking capabilities have attributed our OMNIVOROUS diet as the main catalyst for our intellectual prowess. But where I would draw the line with meat consumption is the vast amounts that people deem they need to consume and the practice of raising them sustainably or not.

  • @kaljerico1Back in 1910, we had not used up 50% of our fresh water supply, 40% of our entire land mass was not taken up by livestock. These livestock did not yet create 30% of all global warming, and 1.1 billion people on earth were not starving to death yet due to lack of a global food supply crises because 70% of all the food raised in the world today is going to feed livestock...not humans.

  • Comment removed

  • What makes humans better than livestock? Are you a speciesist?

  • @riccer24

You have to place the blame on the governments that subsidize the food, water and oil and not on the farmers! There is a sustainable, closed loop method of meat production which Polyface farms, whom Michael Pollan profiles in his book, practices. You can check out their videos on youtube, look for "Polyface Farms" or "Joel Salatin". While I don't agree with keeping animals just to eat them, they are HAPPY living a natural, life in pasture.

  • @kaljerico1Dr. Oppenlander spells out why meat is not sustainable for our own health-Eating animals contributes to the 4 leading causes of death in the world today: coronary heart disease, cancer, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes, and increases your risk by 50-70% of contracting any one of the 5 leading causes of cancer: lung, colon, breast, pancreatic, and prostate. Doesn't sound too healthy to me.

  • @riccer24

None of those degenerative diseases can be attributed to a single factor. Healthy omnivores with a good ph balance dont get them.

  • @riccer24

Ummm...read this book dude. All of those diseases that you attribute to meat consumption is actually a result of the consumption of corn and its myriad of processed elements. Perhaps it's the fact that we feed corn to cows, chickens and FISH, that these disease find causation to their consumption. Furthermore, the high levels of saturated fats in CAFO meats is because they're eating corn and soy which we can agree, is not natural.

  • @cbdoobie If you're curious as to why all the corn subsidies, it's simply because Iowa holds their primary caucuses first.

  • @Drchainsaw77

That would makes sense...and that's the sad thing about politics and greed.

  • @kaljerico1The reason our ancestors ate meat 50,000 years ago is because they did not know any better, the ones that did, realized they had to domesticate crops and grow and eat more plants in order to survive. I was under the impression that we know a bit more about things now then they did back when hunting wooly mammoths with spears was the only function of the day.

  • @riccer24,

So over 50,000 years you don't think the species might have adapted? Hunting and gathering is sustainable. Domestication and monoculture is not.

  • @kaljerico1 Ants have domesticated aphids. Is that unsustainable? Are dogs unsustainable? Ridiculous.

  • @riccer24

Without domesticated animals to cycle the nutrients, sustainable, organic, farming is impossible.

  • @riccer24

It's taken 10,000 years since the advent of agriculture, for our bodies to return to it's stature. If you look at the human fossil record, one can see the stunted growth and malnutrition that humans endured during the supposed human transcendence from animal to human, much like we're experiencing in our health with regards to our consumption of industrial food.

  • Saying that humans started as herbivores and evolved into being able to eat meat is a clear misunderstanding of evolutionary theory . For this to happen , an herbivore species would have to start eating meat AND those that did not would have to die before reaching sexual maturity and passing on their herbivorous genes . The plants this species would have to disappear and they would start eating meat and evolve during their own lifetime ? This makes no sense .

  • @MindofaJedi it makes perfect sense, because every organism is different, we evolve as our enviroment change, during the ice age human's had a lot of hair in almost every part of their body, and even back then , we used our tools to eat food like fish for example, then we just keep evolving and evolving, ect

  • Just because we have eaten animals doesn't mean we thrive on animal flesh . Our stomache PH is far too high to properly digest meat . We are basically frugivores like Chimpanzees who eat 97% of their diet in fruits . They eat some termites and ants when they need to or when humans have affected their habitats and made their normal food less available . Some have eaten each other it does not make them cannibals just as humans are not cannibals because Dahmer ate someone .

  • @MindofaJedi dude we digest most of the meat we ate, obviously there are thing in meat we can't digest, as same as veggies we can't digest the celulose of the vegetables either

  • Just to say that I am aware of the very good contribution of Pollan thoughts to food.

  • Voting with our forks is one of the most powerful tools one can have in this country, like voting with our dollars. I think many folks feel totally disconnected from the gov/t and angry about where their tax dollars are going, but that fury is easily subdued as soon as we turn on the TV and disappear into a fantasy world. Our media is a big distraction, keeping us from being active citizens truly in charge of our own destiny.

  • Mr. Pollen,

I greatly respect the work you've done to reveal the truth behind the wall of our heart-breaking industrial food economy, although I find it difficult to practice what I preach. But what it comes down to is Choices. We all have the choice, as Americans, to make decisions that reflect our values. It is often very difficult, but possible if we are going to live our lives responsible to ourselves.

  • Mr. Pollen, I have great respect for the work you've done to reveal the heart-breaking imbalance of our industrial food economy. It is hard to practice what I preach though, but what it comes down to is Choices. We all have the choice to make decisions that reflect our values, even if it is sometimes difficult.

I thought it was ironic, and I'm sure you would too, to see the plastic water bottle that was most likely given to you off stage before the lecture. Talk about unsustainable!

  • ECOCITADEL MAGNUM ASTRON

  • That kind of biodynamic farming which he describes was in constant use in America between the end of the Civil War to WWI. It started with the closing of the frontier so that farmers 'had' to use sustainable farming such as that used in euroupe at the time (they could not easily get new land once they exhausted the soil). It ended with the advent of focil fuel dependant fertilisers and pesticides around the turn of the century.

  • So far, 5 people have mistakenly given this video a thumbs down.

  • <-- Just posted a review of Pollan's In Defense of Food on my channel.

  • The dilema is this " Because human beings get atherosclerosis and atherosclerosis a disease of only herbivores , then humans must be herbivores " William C Roberts M.D. editor in cheif of the American Journal of Cardiology and author of 1,300 scientific publications .

  • @MindofaJedi

Mr. Pollan lays out the dilemma in his book: "When you can eat just about anything nature has to offer (i.e., you are an omnivore), deciding what you should eat will inevitably stir anxiety, especially when some of the potential foods on offer are liable to sicken or kill you. This is the omnivore's dilemma.." - Michael Pollan

  • he reminds me of like the sam harris of food

  • Omnivores:

    1. Dental structure. Our teeth evolved to eat both meat and plant matter.

    2. Digestion. We are able to both tolerate and fully extract nutrients from most plant and animal sources. Exceptions include cellulose and chitin.

    3. Primate Studies. Other primates, our closest living relatives, are also omnivores. This list includes Chimpanzees, Orangutans, and Gorillas.

    4. Nutrients. Strict vegans must carefully watch the source of their food in order to ensure complete nutrition.

  • @youlance29 Chimpanzees are herbivores , they get less than 3% of their total calories from animal protein and most of that is eating termites and ants . Gorillas are completely herbivores and develop heart disease when fed even a 5% meat and grain based diet . Our teeth and jaw are 100% consistant with herbivores . We have weak bites , unlike carnivores , we have side to side movement of the jaw , unlike carnivores . We cannot even extract calcium from animal milk . Humans are herbivores .

  • @MindofaJedi True, however you are assuming that we eat our foods unprocessed straight from the ground or animal. You are forgetting that we have evolved with fire and tools. Who needs strong sharp jaws if you have a spear or club, or can cook with fire? Yes we have a side to side jaw motion, but that is because it is conducive to both meat and plant eating, it is necesary for plant eating, but it is also hardly a disadvantage for meat digestion to grind it in to a paste before swallowing.

  • @MindofaJedi dude we are not either hervibores or carnivores, get your facts straight, we are omnivores meaning that we have characteristics from both hervivores and carnivores , end of the story

  • @30Chucknorris No , we are herbivores . You can say that we are omnivores as emphatically as you wish , but it doesn't make it so . We share NO characteristics with carnivores . Digestive tract-just like herbivore , jaw like herbivore with side to side movement , no claws , no ability to track, kill , or comsume animals with our natural equipment (claws teeth etc. . What omnivore would be unable to consume animals without cooking them ? Live on raw meat only for 6 months and I will concede .

  • @MindofaJedi dude stop being a dumbass and take biology class for once, we have 4 incisive teeth to cut off meat and other teeth to chew vegetables, we share both characteristics, of course we can't eat raw meat, thats why fire exist, we have bigger brains, we cook our food, we have the tools to eat meat, we are omnivores its a simple as that, have you even seen a human being chasing a cow and eating it alive, or have you ever seen a man eating grass? not, so ur argument is invalid

  • @30Chucknorris Wow , you have failed Biology and cognitive reasoning . First Gorillas have larger incisors and are 100% herbivores . Bigger brains ? That argument fails as well . Ever seen a Blue Whales brain ? The eat phyto-plakton . It is like saying we are carnivores because you drive a Cadillac .Why would we eat grass ? Does being an omnivore mean you eat grass ? Of course not . Were we classified by Bilogists as omnivores ? No . It was anthropologists that made that distinction .

  • @MindofaJedi dude no matter how much you comment, you still have to realize that we are omnivores, you obviously failed biology, and yes we have bigger brains relative to our size lol you make laugh, have you seen any other living creature smarter than us no!, there may be some exceptions like you

  • @30Chucknorris If your definition of Omnivore was that we could eat up to 3% of our diet in insects and be healthy , I would agree . However if you mean that we can thrive eating cheeseburgers , steaks , bacon , and chicken fingers along with a few fruits and veggies you are patently incorrect . Read the China Study . The less meat you eat and the more veggies and fruit the longer you live and the less suceptible you are to disease .

  • @MindofaJedi now you made a point, everything in excess is bad, even vegetables and fruits, thats why theres a food pyramid, at the base you have grain, bread, pastas and cereals who should be consumed from between 6-11 portions a day, then you got Vegetables and fruits that should been taken between 3-5 portions , then you have diary, fish and meats that should be consumed in 2-3 portions and then on top you have the fats and the sugars , Thats Just a biological fact

  • @30Chucknorris Hahaha , you really bring up the food pyramid ? Do you know where the four food groups came from ? A group of advertising reps . There was not a single doctor or nutritionist involved . The USDA said this is how much meat, veggies, dairy , grain we produce in the USA help us sell the right proportions and they came up with the food groups . There are books about this . Dairy should never be consummed every study has shown cow milk to be damaging to human health .

  • @MindofaJedi lol i dont care believe what you want to believe, theres no point in arguing

  • @30Chucknorris Anyone who referms to a CHART as a bilogical fact is beneath logical debate . Do you understand what a bilogical fact would be ? A bilogical fact would be humans need water to survive . Every decent nutritionist laughs at the food pyramid , that isn't a bilogical fact , but it is true .

  • @MindofaJedi Have a look at the end product.... All asians look older tan they are, are bent over, cough, sneeze and splutter all over you when u sit next to them on the train or bus. .....

  • @ThePhantomLash wtf? Asians age better than anyone on the planet. You were probably sitting next to a 90 year old asian that looked like a 65 year old white lady.

  • @30Chucknorris

Many people DO eat raw meat, and your incisor comment is retarded. Horses have bigger incisors than us, and they eat grass.. Fire doesn't just "exist", it's not like you can go out in the arctic and find it...Humans realized that cooking food makes it taste better, so that's why we do it. Kind of how we realized sugar tastes good, so we add it to foods. Doesn't mean it's "good" or it's "natural"...I know people who don't even have sharp teeth. They have flat teeth all around...

  • @MichaelBallack91 lol horses dont have sharp teeth, maybe a mutant one, and no humans have bigger brains for a reason, maybe humans were herbivores at first, but we evolve, we can use tools now to eat our food, and we have been improving that thousands and thousands of years, we even cook our vegetables for god's sake

  • Food Inc. talks about the same issues

  • @earthlyescapes Yeah, no kidding. He practically wrote the movie.

  • didn't realize

  • Keep the crap (toxins) out of you such as... fast food, processed foods, SUGAR, aspartame (artificial sweetners), fried foods (trans fats), flour, table salt, enriched anything, over the counter drugs (like tylenol), prescription drugs, alcohol, etc.

think NATURE - eat WHOLE foods. mostly plant based. Fruits, veggies, Nuts & seeds. Meat if eaten should be clean. Grass feed beef, wild fish (not farmed), etc. Marijuana-Cannabis-Pot (whatever) for MEDICINE.

  • @MopDMTBARTL sugar is not a toxin and a smoked drug is not a good thing for a society

  • @summerfunteam

This is not entriely false, but more so false than true.

  • @BDubXOne what is false?

  • @summerfunteam seriously stop spreading lies. i smke pot everyday and my health is nothing but postive, however, when i eat all the processed foods that i want filled with refined sugar, my healthy is HORRIBLE. check this out. poor diet and physical inactivity kills more people than marijuana. marijuana - zero deaths!

    drugwarfacts. org/cms/Causes_of_Death

  • @MopDMTBARTL i understand that poor diet and inactivity is bad. i live in america lol. but the fact is that a smoked substance IS bad for your lungs

  • @MopDMTBARTL I thought that way too when I was a bong brother. Smoke nothing! There are many other ways to get your THC if that's what you need.

  • @HunterMann - you are right, there are many other ways. unfortunately smoking it is the easiest & most convienent for people. its best if you invest in a 500 dollar vaporizer (volcanic) and vaporize it or bake with it!

    cheers

  • @MopDMTBARTL Yes, eating baked goods to get baked... My theory is that most of those silly hookah lounges will be converted to hashish/pot vaporizing, when the herb is legal.

  • Even though this is much more relevant in our lives, and I do find it incredibly fascinating, I just cannot get over how fascinating his ideas in Botany of Desire are. These ideas show the endless magnificence of evolution... incredible.

  • I love Pollan's work. The only problem I have is why the hell did it take so long for somebody to formulate these ideas on paper??? I had thought many of his ideas myself and when I asked my biology/ecology teachers about these ideas they said "That sounds just like Pollan's work." and I was baffled to see that all these ideas had (quite recently) been presented by Pollan. Here I'd thought these were my ideas! I was just a tad too late... Botany of desire is about the most fascinating book ever!

  • excellent work!

  • Portable electric fencing is great; we use it to rotate our livestock on pasture. BUT the concept and the practice are NOT new.

Remember 'Little Boy Blue'? Or Peter the goatherd in 'Heidi'? Two examples of low-tech ways to move livestock to fresh grazing practiced for thousands of years. Poultry was also herded, or housed in portable coops, some with wheels.

Not all farmed this way, but the best pastoralists never forgot the wisdom of working with (not against) the natural world.

  • The man is brilliant.

  • Thanks for posting this. He's great. I don't agree with him when he says we know we are coming to the end of our fossil fuel supply. (See; Lindsey Williams - The Energy Non-Crisis) But other than that, ces't bon.

  • nothing wrong with eating meat in of it self but in name of convince we have become most inhumane as we run animals threw the grinder of factories.

  • Yeah meat is not bad for you but the way we produce it is bad on the enviroment and the fact that they torture animals is really bad.

  • @pboisei

Meat is actually quite unhealthy for you in high consumption (speaking naturally). Even more especially in the way its produced (far from naturally), not just on the environment, & putting aside the ethical issues with animals and humans/workers involved.

  • Exactly.

  • @bumfire007 watch earthlings, or meet your meat, the current system is disgusting.

  • Illuminati=ET kin aka gods, Ea, Sirians, Satan, Pepsi, Zeus, angels/demons, dragons, hulu, vampires, bluebloods, Al Gore, Windsors, Rothschilds, Rockefellars etc who rule cults like Freemasonry. Their agenda: continually cull/victimize people via vaccines/other poisons like gum, Codex Alimentarius, carbon taxes, internet 2, WW3 then stage an alien invasion to get a fascist world government/religion with us chipped. Support DrDeagle, Stewart Swerdlow, gardeners and free-energy techs!

  • @bumfire007 I don't agree with you that eating meat is not a problem. It is a problem of animal ethics and also a problem with the environment. I think the best option to care about the environment and the animals is vegetarianism/veganism plus concerns about the local agriculture. I recomend you this article about the pitfalls of accepting that local meat is always the best solution for the environment and for the animals. "The Myth of Sustainable Meat and the Danger of the Local." google

  • @bumfire007 What the hell does that mean?

  • @bumfire007

    @bumfire007

I agree. Families have depend on their farms and livestock for generations. I think my grandparents were normal in the way they cared for the animals, kept them clean and well fed until it was time to slaughter them. It was done quick, efficiently and with gratitude to God. Some of the practices nowadays are absolutely disgusting.

  • @Merryrobin

Excellent practice... This is the halal method of slaughter. Unfortunately people do not understand the halal method of slaughter and many slaughterers do not follow the correct method of halal slaughter. In a nutshell it is exactly how you described the process. Livestock need to be cared for and kept healthy. When time to slaughter, should be done quickly & efficiently and mentioning the name of God at the time of the slaughter.

  • @theonetruemessage

When I was a teenager, a 35 year old woman told me about working in slaughterhouses. If a pregnant sow was being slaughtered, they would have fun slicing open her belly to throw her litter into boiling oil. They thought it was really cool to hear the agony of the pigglets being boiled alive. She told me these things because she also enjoyed torturing me. Its because of this I avoid buying dairy and meat. I rather go without then unknowingly support this brutality.

  • can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

  • vegetarians can eat what they CHOOSE!

  • I love his work.

  • my university is making me read this book!!! i thought i was done with summer reading after middle school and high school. this women sux at talking

  • if you sux at talking and don't want to read, university may be a waste of resources for you.

I really enjoyed this book. It contains some great insights into how Western civilization works, and it shows the wonderful irony of Montezuma's real revenge, corn.

  • @NanyKayo

That should be his next book title. "Montezuma's Real Revenge".

  • omg me too...

  • Milk is terrible for you? Tell that to your mother.

  • @h2onitro

If you were as educated as you make yourself out to seem, there is no way you could believe milk is good for you. Unless your a little malnourished, I suppose sucking on some pregnant woman's titty would be somewhat beneficial. Although, its pretty nice during any condition. :P

  • UM..........

  • I love Michael Pollan ideas, but the bottom line for sustainability is "less people in the world". People decided not to grow organic because it is more profitable, they have humongous feed lots, because it is not economically sustainable. We just can't feed the world population with organic agriculture, because it is not productive enough. It is false money making idea, we need to reduce the world population then we will not have this sustainability problem!

  • if you want anyone to really listen to you, you should demonstrate your ideas on yourself first. since i dont think you plan to "reduce" yourself out of the population, i dont think you should be telling others thats what we have to do.

  • Alright, I am killing myself right now! ....

Just kidding I am not doing this. My point is not to tell everybody to commit suicide, instead I am just saying that the world does not sustain this kind of population growth. Simply because we will run out of food. So what WE HAVE to do is to ask OURSELVES if OUR grand children will have good to food to eat, and pray that our kids will not be the 1 out of every 3 kids that will have diabetes type II because they had a fast-food diet.

  • Another perspective is to reduce the amount of stuff people consume. Also, people need to consider what "away" is when they "throw it away". Away is a landfill. Away is trash on the side of the road, Away is the garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean. Reducing the world's population is important, but so long as people think it OK to live in a throw-away society all of the crap we consume will haunt us.

  • I think it's more a matter of coming to terms with the reality that we're going to have to look beyond profitability if we're going to find, as Pollan puts it, a sustainable food source. It's not a matter of can or can't as far as organic (or rather sustainable) food is concerned; we MUST feed the world with organic agriculture or soon we'll have nothing left to eat.

  • @bonuspants Ok, but bear in mind that there is a differance between organic agriculture and what he is advocationg which is biodynamic agriculture. Organic agariculture may seed the earth with less chemicals but it is not necesarily as sustainable as the co-dependant ecosystem farm. Organic agriculture still requires the use of transported fertiliser and feed despite being organic. Whereas what he is suggesting is a vitualy contained ecosystem as found in nature.

  • theres nothing to defend

  • go away

  • Radio national australia have a program called first person, in which michael read extracts /condensed version of his book, its a fantastic book , it explores so many ethical /moral/econimical and many other general philosophies on FOOD,farming, production, transport he writes with humour rather than just facts and figures, making it an easy read/listen.Basically I just found it to be really interesting...and really well read.

  • This book is amazing! I am requesting to read it for school. This book is not about "going vegetarian". It is about how our food effects our society in terms of politics, economics, health, and anthropology evolution. For anyone who wants to educate themselves beyond the average mind...read this book!

  • If people keep making fun of this then why are you here? Why bothering commenting?

Vegetables are far better for you than some carcess. If you'll never change then please just leave.

  • The Omnivore's Dilemma is NOT about vegetarianism.

  • well either you haven't actually been tested, which lets face it people lie on Youtube (I'll presume you are not lying though), or its the fact the recommended daily amounts for are based on the average person which is the average of both male and female combined, the recommended daily amounts are often much lower than most people need(if thats how your calculating it) or it may be because the deficiency tests are notoriously inaccurate, google it and see I'm sure there's info on this some where

  • animal sources are very high in b-12 and are considered excellent sources(such as calfs liver, snapper , venison, salmon, beef...), but there are other sources like kelp, algaes(blue-green algae), yeast(brewers yeast), and fermented plant foods (like tempeh, miso, or tofu), but non of these contain significant amounts of b-12, there huge amount of these foods you would have to consume to get anywhere near the proper amount of b-12 would be, well. alot. why not drink some organic raw milk or eggs

  • goldsby5 - You are correct that some meat contains high levels of B-12. However you realize animals get the B-12 from the various bacteria that grow on grasses and grains? In other words, the B-12 in meat comes from plants, so why not cut out the middle-man (or is it "middle animal"?)? I eat a mostly vegan diet and take a vegan B-12 supplement, just to be safe. Most food has healthy bacteria washed from it before it hits store shelves.

  • goldsby5 - And if you'd like me to share some blood test results from a detailed test I had last fall for life insurance, I'd be glad to share them. I passed with flying colors and was eligible for the lowest cost plan, because I am in such great health. Not a lie. I'll fax them to you if you'd like.

  • you take a b12 supplement

any diet which requires supplements to maintain good general health is by definition not a healthy diet. thank you for proving me correct. oh, and i've been reading a book about the nutritional advantages of eating insects(one of my professors recommended it i'm not really gonna eat insects), and one part of the book stood out as it mentioned that people used to eat large amounts of insects, insect eggs, and insect feaces all of which contain especially

  • -con; concentrated amount b12 and other fat-soluble vitamins and also minerals. the reason many of us now dont eat these things is because most people eat non-organic produce and the pesticides destroy the insects. hint.

also the science behind this idea you keep bringing up of bacteria being a sufficient amount of b12 is pretty dubious infact the only people who support this idea that i can find are vegetarian & vegan websites which are of course bias and they arnt scientists so

  • i cant take them to seriously. pay particular attention to where i use the word "sufficient"

and finally i found a lovely little website which is based on science most of which i totally agree with also its bound to piss you off... just kiddin'.

anyhow nice to hear from you again and i anticipate further aggrevated comment.

  • goldsby5 - A vegan diet does not require that you take a B12 supplement. I just take one by choice. In fact, I know plenty of people who eat all sorts of diets who take vitamin supplements by choice. Nutritional yeast is another great source of B12 for the vegan diet, as are fortified foods (Silk Soymilk provides 50% daily allowance per cup). So you stand corrected. Vegan diet does not require vitamin supplements. Not sure why you are trying to prove a vegan diet to be unhealthy.

  • i presume your referring to the bacteria on wild fruit and veg as a source of B12, this has been proven quite simply as not enough even with the b12 in you intestines, by far

Vitamin A in the form of Retinol is the only real vitamin A, beta carotene gets converted only under certain circumstances, and inefficiently, into retinol.

  • cont:

fat soluble vitamins are found in fruit, veg, nuts & seeds, but that wasn't my point, fat itself and more importantly the variety of fats are require for those fat-soluble vitamins to be used by the body.

I'm a biochemistry student at the university of Birmingham, England, i still of course have alot to learn but this is basic stuff

  • goldsby4: When I weigh the true cost of eating meat (links to heart disease via cholesterol, which is at immeasurable low levels in plants; environmental impact of factory farming; colon cancer; heart disease and diabetes and more) against taking a B-12 supplement to avoid all of the problems in a meat based diet, it's a no brainer.

I would never criticize someone for choosing to eat meat/ I'm not sure why you are so concerned with how others eat. To each his/her own.

  • Has something to do with Codex Alimantarius, doesn't it?

  • I'd rather diet than eat a vegan diet. YUCK

  • ..is (sorry) .. A good product (which you seem to promote). Varied ingredients (which you do not). And A substantial understanding of Bio-chemestry (which you do not have or won't admit to).

Provide us all with your prize winning nutritional research papers, and we will all eat better. .. until then, keep referencing somebody else.

  • ACEBAKER911 "The healthiest diet on the planet is".. not what you think it is...

If you do some more (head out of your ass) research, you will find that most of the food you claim to be "good for you" is not at all different from a home-made meal from a good burger joint. .What you are confusing

  • where do you get B12, vitamin D, and Vitamin A(retinol, beta-carotene isnt real vitamin A) to name a few basic necessities. the lack of protein has never really been an issue for any one, it is just a proposed problem invented by vegans because it a problem they can solve a battle they can win. the real issues are with the lack of fat-soluble vitamins like the ones i listed above, and for that matter a diverse selection of fat itself as fat comes in many forms and all a necessary

  • I swear, after hearing this, seeing global warming, current economic crisis, more violence worldwide..etc., this world is coming to a crashing end. I know it won't, but things are not in good shape at all.

  • You're stupid.

Our "current economic crisis" is because you have a Honda. I blame you.

  • Do you think this person is going to have an open mind if you call him/her stupid?

  • brilliance, pure brilliance

  • Nope, i'm an omnivore, mostly plants, eat 4oz free range buffalo or chicken 3 times a week, fish 3 times a week. The key is low glycemic, low calorie. thats whats important.

  • Nature is infinitely abundant...however, for capitalism to work, you need perceived scarcity...hence our current problems...The minutes on the farmer around 34 minutes are awesome!!

  • The world would be so much simpler if we weren't encumbered with conscience...

  • You know what the worst part is? All you hypocrites who say, "YEA POLLANS RIGHT! People who eat fast food and buy unfairly traded products are devils!" and then ten minutes later you are putting on your indonesian-made clothes, sitting on your chinese-made couches, turning on you japanese-made TVs, and stuffing your fat faces full of government-subsidized fast food like the rest of America.

If you really want to have such strong opinions, do something about it instead of just bitching.

  • My point exactly.

  • this video is still hilarious.
