mcclaire, what youre missing is the direction and focus on acting that is not in this version... if you see a real theatre company, youd get it. hell even the film , awful as it is, shows that
i just dont like sally howes or this production. it is too operatic. ( i know it is an opera company) i work in professional opera and theater, this production is obviously more concerned with perfect vocals than acting
I was fortunate to appear with Sally Ann Howes in 'The Merry Widow' in the late 80's and she was a fantastic person so nice and gracious and just to stand on the same stage as SAH sent shivers down my spine.
I was in the chorus but I did push myself to the front and held Sally Anns hand in one of her entries I also trod on the back of the train on her dress when we entered on stage!!! she was a true pro and didn't even blink
How interesting. I always love to hear from chorus members of professional productions -- they have the best stories. More intimate in feeling than stories from directors and such, you know?
Did you happen to meet George Lee Andrews or Regina Resnik?
I met George Lee Andrews when I performed with his daughter in Drood. She played Drood, I played Rosa. He complimented my voice, and I was on cloud nine for a week.
This man, George Lee Andrews, makes a great Frederik. He really jumps from the stage (and screen, of course). And his voice is amazing.
And Sally Ann Howes is great as Desiree. I like that a woman with such singing abilities was chosen to portray her, though casting women with less than stellar singing voices has worked wonderfully thus far.
Great, humorous number. This is why Sondheim is my favorite Broadway composer, ever.
I love Saly Ann Howes' beautiful mature voice she had in that part of her career, but I also agree that she isn't quite good casting as Desiree, it's like having Julie Andrews do it...always just a bit too polite, and she also is too old for the part...this has become a quintessential role for slightly over the hill diva's bu desiree is really between forty and fifty, not sixty something...
He already did in 2003, with Juliet Stevenson as Desiree. I didn't see it but sounds like an excellent cast. The play is quite light in parts though, Jeremy Irons has always struck me as being a very dark character.
I think he could pull it off acting-wise, but for Fredrik you need to have a fantastic BUT effortless and natural voice. Len and this guy definitely have it. I'm not sure about Jeremy Irons.
Benny Goodman recorded this song with clarinet... I'm currently trying to learn it, but I don't have the sheet music so I'm trying to do so just by ear - But it would help me a lot to find out in which key it is at least...:( But this is the first time I hear this sung version - I quite like it! Thanks for posting:)
i must respectfully disagree with midnitesho. i think that Sally Ann Howes' performance is really marvelous. she plays on the fact that Frederik disregards so blatantly (for the most part) her sarcastic comments, and by reciting her comments in a falsely earnest fashion makes the result even more funny and poignant.
I really think that this was better than the first production.Sally ann Howes was wonderful

I love how a production that's actually well-sung comes along ... and people start complaining that it's TOO well-sung. *facepalm*

What would people think if Jeremy Irons were to play Frederik?? He may be sort of old for it... but in general, what do you think?

Listen to him do Higgins on a "My Fair Lady" CD...I'm not too sure he could sing this score.

I don't really know how I feel about SAH as Desiree. She doesn't seem quite sarcastic and jealous enough for this scene.

Apparently there is some kind of Licensing problem. Seems a little strange as Sweeny Todd is available. Must be the NYCO licensing.

When Desiree says,' No, I'd strike her first!', I swear, I almost fell from a standing position. It's that funny! This show must come back to B'way!

great Fredrick- but Desiree just isn't sarcastic enough in this song

I concur. She seems a fine singer and actress, but she hasn't the sting for the part.

that sting is really most important in this song, i think. also in send in the clowns
