  • 6:35 that guy is pretty much f*cked?

  • is the gay music added cos it spoils this

  • I love the Rome HBO series- they actually depict Roman armor correctly (chainmail) instead of going the Hollywood route of everyone wearing lorica segmentata.

  • @Intranetusa yep mail armors were generally more often used than segmented armors, but in border regions where most of the fightings occur, lorica segmentata were more often used i think, in the first 200yrs of imperial rome.

  • @triggersots4686

Yep you are correct, in the border regions , lorica segmentata was used more often. (but I think chain was still the primary)

I like the lorica segmentata but Hollywood's over glamorazation has really killed it for me.

For me, LS only belongs with Praetorians marching in parades and the far flung border guards in the 1st-2nd centuries. :D

  • @triggersots4686 actually, Lorica Segmentata was generally only used on Danube frontier

  • @Picard578 actually, that is Rheine frontier, my bad :-)

  • @triggersots4686 it really just depends were the fighting took place or where the legion was located and the wealth of the region early on the romans did use chainmail but they started to use segmented armour cause it was cheaper and more effective

  • @hater94511

Nope. The Lorica Segmentata was far more expensive than chainmail. Thats why only troops within the legions (as opposed to auxilaries) were given the segmented armour. The use of the segmented armour declined because of its much higher cost later in the empire and because the distinction between legionaries and auxilaries blurred.

  • @123duffbeerrules well your right and wrong at the same time LS was issued to Romans not auxilia LS was still issued even when rome fell it was still used it wasnt more expensive it just took longer to make it wasnt difficult to make either

  • @hater94511

Thats not true. Remains of the segmentata has been found throughout Limitanei regions. The segmentata was more expensive, the fact that it took up much more iron alone makes it more expensive. Iron sheets are far harder to make then rings, to create quality iron sheets you need higher temperatures, greater prescision, curvature among many other things.

  • @123duffbeerrules that was after the military reforms were auxilia were getting better equiped since there were far more of them then romans in the military the romans were still better equiped though the price of the LS was fairly close to that of chain mail but still cheaper and the romans mastered iron working far before that so production time and cost was not a issue for them which is shown in the early Roman army

  • @hater94511

The number of auxilia in the empire never outnumbered the number of legionaries. For every legionarie there was an auxilia. The reforms of Diocletian created the Comitatenses which were mobile field armies, while the Limitanei were border troops, however they weren't "auxilia". There was the feoderati but these were barbarian conscripts from outside the empire.

  • @triggersots4686 The lorica segmentata come to popular use perhaps in the first century, and its use stopped at the start of the 3rd century. The first known example is from 9AD, from the teutoburg forest site.

  • @triggersots4686 thx for telling us from where u have the clips,i hope to see as much as possible

  • @triggersots4686

I think segmented armor was also use more often by higher ranking officers then normal legionnaires

  • @SirAroace For certain legions it was standard for every citizen heavy infantry to be equip with the Lorica Segentata, other legions only got the mail.

  • @triggersots4686 tho HC seems to depict pre-marian legions in segmentata... the fuck.

  • @triggersots4686 Is that true???? I was lead to believe that lorica segmentata armour was more common because it was faster and cheaper to make. Chainmail took time to bind every ring when you only needed to bend a few strips of iron for the other. Reply would be nice thanks.

  • @MegaBILLLL Only throughout the Republic and early Imperial period

  • @MegaBILLLL

The iron straps of the segmentata took up much more iron, required precise binding with either leather straps or iron nails. Chainmail had been in use for hundreds of years and the process is not to hard, plus its far cheaper.

  • @123duffbeerrules thanks the answer, I see your point about the chainmail being used before the segmentata, A defenat sign that it would be much more common . Cheers :)

  • @triggersots4686 Thats true but in time of HBO series segmented armors didnt even exist. And normaly in anny Roman Period movie they realy dont pay attencion and you see Earlier Romans or Late Romans wearing the same lorica segmentada even that centuries and centuries of military developement have passed but Romans didnt change at all xD

  • @ImperialGuard9001 in hollywood that is

  • @Intranetusa in the golden ages of the roman empire the lorica was preferred because it was easier to make :) not to mention it looks cooler.

  • @dominusetdeus060644

Lorica segmentata was never easier to make. Sheets of iron was very difficult to make until the industrial revolution. The segmentata would be easier to make today compared to chainmail thanks to modern technology, but back then it would be much harder to make.

Lorica hamata chainmail was actually preferred during all eras of Roman history because it was cheaper, easier to make, easier to repair, one-size-fits all, didn't chafe the skin, didn't have rotting straps, etc

  • @Intranetusa Plausible enough...but the argument that it looks cooler cant be beaten...lol.

  • @dominusetdeus060644

Indeed. It is undeniably the best parade armor they had. :D

  • @Intranetusa maybe i can triarii the told you why from the fouding of rome to 100B.C. it was the militia roman army biuld up of hastati princeps andn 100BC gaius marius invented the legionary. that where a standing army eqiupt by the generals from 100BC to zero the most normal units where chainmail and the elite units the segmentata. in year 0 segmentata was standardized. and from 180-200AD rome slowly replaced the legionary with the 1/2roman 1/2 christ unit Comitatense

  • @svon1 maybe i can told you why........hastati princeps triarii

sorry that wasnt my english that was my pc

  • @svon1

    Incorrect.

    1. There is no year 0

    2. L-Segmentata was in use in small numbers in the first century BCE

    3. Chainmail was in use long before Gaius Marius. Chainmail was usually the primary armor, and was favored by the principes and triarii even since the Punic Wars.

    4. The Lorica Segmentata was never standardized. The Roman army never implemented a single standard armor and used many types of armors.

    5. Even during the LS's peak use, chainmail was still more popular and more common.

  • @Intranetusa but not tactics. Romans almost never broke formation in battle, and even late Imperial 'barbarian' army was well-trained and relatively disciplined.

  • @Picard578

Yeh, but better than Gladiator at least.

  • @Intranetusa

later on, they actually wore the lorica segmentata as standard equipment, and then the aixiliaries wore chainmail......but you are rigth, firstly they wore chainmail (no one precisely knows when the shift was made, but around trajans conquering of dacia, 100-102 and 105-106)

  • @CasperDalboe

Its quite possible that the lorica segmentata came to grow in use with Trajan's campaigns in Dacia due to the fact that the Dacii utilized a weapon called the falfalx (a blade on a long pole) that made chainmail relatively useless.

  • @123duffbeerrules

    exactly.....

  • @CasperDalboe

Lorica segmentata was never the standard equipment in any time period. Chainmail was always more popular even during the height of the lorica segmentata's use. There was no shift.

It is a popular misconception that Trajan's troops all wore segmentata - mainly because of the historically inaccurate Trajan's column in Rome. The more accurate Adamclisi Tropaeum column in Dacia itself shows all regular legionaires wearing scale and nobody wearing lorica segmentata.

  • @Intranetusa

we dont really know for sure do we? none the less ive never heard one claiming that one of the armors were dominant, but i would like to know for sure......

  • @CasperDalboe

We know enough based on circumstantial evidence - the majority of armor depicted has been chainmail hamata or scale, and the majority of armors excavated has been chainmail. The segementata is usually excavated in border regions and historically is clustered around the 2nd century period.

  • @Intranetusa all legionares wore lorica segmentata retard the soldiers that wore chain mail were not legionaries they were auxillia who werent roman citizens they were shite hence chainmail the roman army was professional they all had standardised equipemnt also the battle depicted in thi is laughable the enemy has standardised millitary atire

  • @fdr100100

You watch too many hollywood movies. Chainmail was worn by everybody. The same armor given to regular legionaires were also given to auxillary, and vice versa. The main difference between the two was citizenship - sometimes they were given the exact same equipment and fought in the same way.

Look up the monument called Adamclisi Tropaeum - everybody wears scale mail.

I suggest you read up on some real history instead of getting your info from games and movies.

  • @Intranetusa i have a major in roman and greek history you shouldnt doubt the richness of the roman empire all citizen sodiers were given the same armour thats the privilage they were given as citisens any chainmail you see romans wearing is premarius and auxillia soldiers as for the Adamclisi Tropaeum that is correct it honors the auxllia that defeted the enemy without the help of the legion, in movies they are not even wearing the correct lorica or chainmail or helmuts etc

  • @fdr100100

Thats a lie. Even during the height of the lorica segmentata the chainmail was more common, one need only look at Trajan or Hadrian's column. Oval shields are also prominent. In Marcus' Aurelius' column its basically the same, chainmail. So no, 'we' are not retards, you are. Where did you get your major? A community college?

  • @123duffbeerrules cant be stuffed arguing i know im right so just shut up

  • @fdr100100

    Obviously you're not right, rofl.

  • @fdr100100

The Adamclisi Tropaeum depicts both legionnaries and auxilia.

  • @123duffbeerrules i didnt say there werent legions on it i said it honors the auxilia

  • @fdr100100

If you're a history major, then I suggest you study in detail Roman military equipment because you are still wrong. Your statement about permarius is totally and absolutely wrong. Lorica segmentata wasn't even around until the late 1st century BCE, and was only more common during the 2nd century CE. The Marian reforms was in the late 2nd century BCE.

The Adamclsi Tropaeum honors BOTH auxillary and legions.

Chainmail was the most common armor for all soldiers.

  • Lorica segmentata has never been the standardized armor of the Romans. It has always been a rare armor mostly used near the borders and usually in the 2nd century.

Chainmail has always been the most popular armor before and after the Marian reforms. It was far far more cost efficient, far easier to produce and maintain, etc and provided almost as good protection as segmentata. That's why segmentata was phased out totally.

  • Grat video, can you give me all the tracks ?

  • @Theblackgentleman2 its in the description

  • It's needs the Benny Hill music.

  • Nice video about the roman war techniques. Just a couple of things are to be a bit, just a bit, criticized in this video : the Northern italian troups fighting alongside with the romans and wearing the ''montefortino'' (celtic helmet ) were celtic people while in this video the facial traits of some of them (see ending part) are clearly northern african. Was the movie bugdet ..poor ? Then the roman warrior with the wolf's skin on his head .......that doesn' t look like it truly was weared

  • @wann700 that is because alot of these were put on by the BBC, so most of them were british actors and other people, it would have cost way too much to bring italians up, and they would not have been able to speak english which is the language that was needed for these things.

  • First song is europa from globus the second song is reqiuem for a dream

  • this is not a video of rome, this is a great work!!!!! great! very good

  • song fail

  • @Kaeladino Oh, and I assume the many civil wars, assasinations, and attempted revolutions in russia were not there then. Right ? I'm telling you, the roman empire was weakening but holding. The barbarians just pushed em down the hill.

  • Has there ever been an army as unstoppable as the Roman Legions since the advent of the gun? You could place them in any battle involving land armys open battle and I doubt any Army could stand aginst them.

  • @Kaeladino No but russia is the proof a state can hold for a very long time even if filled with corruption, and romans had the advantage ( until they started losing to barbarians ) of having a relatively happy people, which russia didnt have and yet survived for very long. Corruption was a major problem, but when the barbarians came up it just destroyed what was holding the empire together and thats why Rome Fell in the west.

  • @coolasacoldsummer - the French and British colonial empires inherited the Roman legacy. They essentially conquered all of Africa except Ethiopia within about 20 years.

  • Best army of the ancient world. I can only imagine how strong they would be today if they managed to fight back the barbarians in 453 O_o

  • @EduardoElSexypants (Thinks for a minute or two) "HOOOOOLYYYY SHIIIIIIIIIIIT"
