A grand ship! I had the privilege of sailing on her (tourist) in the fall of '73: a big load of happy passengers, a superb crew, and exquisite cuisine. I found the interior decor somewhat Spartan (sure, compared with Normandie's!), but attractive, and everything about her a great and suitable flag-bearer of the legendary French Line tradition. Le Paquebot FRANCE will never be forgotten!
How could you speak to France like that. I love her! Goddamn it, I love France Norway! I think she is a gorgeous. Do you know, I'm planing my revenge on those who scrapped her & made me cry my eyes out? Well, I am. France was a beautiful Liner. If you don't like her, then get out & leave your damn opinion to yourself!
"Grand Dame of the Seas"?, more like oversubsidised commercial failure. It never made it, it was far too ahead of its time, it entered service at a bad period in history just as the airlines were starting up, its interiors were gawdy and horrible and it was incredibly expensive to run!
maybe she didn't make it as the SS France but she damn sure did a good job as the flagship of NCL for over 20 year and changing the face of Caribbean cruising forever, and as for your your OPINION about the interiors I don't see how the differ much from the grand ships of the day and I have thousands of people who beg to differ you on that
Seriously, the interior furnishings from the "France" period in particular are most likely VERY sought after. Well-done, top-shelf French mid-century mod furnishings? I'd get in on some of that goodness if I had the cash. Go to your local high-end furniture store and check out how many modern styles are influenced by this genre of interior furnishing. The dining room was one in a million, too.
She was magnificent. I have sailed on her many, many time and just happily paid $ 100 to own my last cabin number on her "Sky 061." She will forever be in my heart.
Last I heard, the bow tip has been "ceremonially" cut, which means that scrapping is due to begin soon (whether or not it has begun, I do not know for sure). One thing seems for sure, it's not a matter of "if", but "when".

There's no doubt. Normandie and France were in a class of their own. Ours were always outdated. Andy. U.K.

This is an answer to
"chrisr19897" : "its interiors were gawdy and horrible "
Many artists and crafstmen made some furnitures for this liner.
If you don't like its interiors, don't worry antique dealers will be very happy to buy it.

Well at least Cunard's QE2 has lasted a damn site longer than P&O's CANBERRA, CGT's FRANCE and the United States Lines SS UNITED STATES!

One of my biggest regrets was that I never got the chance to sail her.....so beautiful, as the France and the Norway.
