  • I have a Kelpie, and I live in a one bedroom apartment. Everything I've read says they are very very very ill suited for apartment life, maybe I just got lucky. Though when I take her to the dog part ('bout 7 acers.) she runs around and tries to "herd" any other dog that is away from their owner. It's kind of crazy to watch but funny.

  • My Granda worked 7 Highland Collie, (usually called Boarder Collie but the Highland is a wee bit "squwattier" if you get my drift. I found 2 Kelpie pups running in the rain in Texas and took them home....I had never heard of a Kelpie, I had 3 acers and they ran every inch. Very smart, easily trained BUT CAUTION these are, as the lads say, WORKING dogs they need the challenge and the space.

  • How close are they to the border collie?

  • Not close at all. In a league of their own. Much smarter and have greater stamina. They show potential from 6 weeks. Border collies are great pets and well bread Kelpies are flat out working dogs.

  • Thanx, i'm a sheperd in the netherlands, and I have worked with 12 border collies. The most show their potential from 6 weeks to. I'm oriëntating for a new good dog, but the dog must be fit for the climate here ( -15 C sometimes ). Thanx for your comment.

  • Thanks - this reminds me of my Kelpie/Shepherd mix, who would "herd me" when we would go running in the morning on a soccer field and in a stadium. Hope whoever won him/her gave him/her a great home. Very intelligent dogs!
