Morote Gari = tackle, not a throw.

Minor throws (kosoto gake etc) = a trip, usually not a throw.

A judo throw is when you catch, lead, or push your opponent off-balance and instantly capitalize. Shooting for leg picks and driving through is not the same concept.

Solution: No more calling Ippon for tackles and pick ups, only throws. Let everything that's not a CLEAN JUDO THROW go to the ground and put the GROUND FIGHTING back in Judo.

@gavipk Morote-gari is classified as nage-waza and considered a throw. A judo throw is any technique that is classified as nage-waza. Some of these aren't scoring throws, like ude-gaeshi (because there is kansetsu-waza being applied together with the throw, and it is the kansetsu-waza that brings uke down, not kuzushi/kake/tsukuri).

This throw should NEVER been called ippon. Watch closely at 03:36 and see that Suzuki's back NEVER actually hit the mat. Yuko at most!

@loudenvier My point was that while its classified as a throw in judo, I'm calling it a tackle because that's what it resembles more than most other forward or back throws. I'm not the only one who shares this opinion - that's why the 2010 IJF rule change makes it illegal to just rush in and tackle with morote like its football. I'm not saying the rule change is good or bad - but the reality is it steers Judo away from becoming a tackling game and towards being a throwing game.

Just like te-guruma/sukui-nage (also prohibited). The "sitters" have even banished one of the founder's breakthrough throws, the one that helped him understand the principle of Kuzushi: kata-guruma.

Today athleticism is prevailing in the high-level Judo because the best fit athlete (not the best Judoka) can impose a crazy pace, and force the better technical judoka into "passivity". If it was allowed more time to setup a throw, the best technical player would be able to defend itself the onslaught of the "athlete" and then throw for ippon. [continue]

All these new rules, no leg grabs, etc. are only necessary because of their early changes in search for this "marketability": too many shido rules, way too frequent stoppages (both in tachi and ne waza), laughable/ridicule ippon criteria, all these are the core of the problems. Preventing leg grab won't bring judo back to its glory. :-(

Regarding your point about athleticism, one of the main reasons Kano started Judo was to make a sport context for Jujitsu in order to incorporate the highest levels of athleticism. That's what it is - a combat sport, a game.

The way that Kano found the best to educate was to use the notions of martial arts that he studied, because they had all the mental, physical, disciplinary and educational traits he wanted to include in a complete physical education system. Athleticism has always been frown upon in favor of technical excellence but the rules today favor athleticism over technique.

Winning through athleticism derails from Judo's aims and principles, and fails from the educative perspective. Granted it wins medals at the Olympics, and today even the Japanese Judoka are extremely athletic. But my point is that the rules being created fail to notice that these crazy stoppages, penalties and low ippon criteria are the core of the problem.

@loudenvier I guess many people want Judo to be freestyle grappling with a gi on. The IJF and the 2010 rules say no, Judo is not freestyle submission grappling, but should be a sport that makes you focus and work harder on perfecting the core elements of Judo - like upright posture, balance and kuzushi, psychology, movement etc. Also it wants to impress a standing combat philosophy that is upright and fluent with striking and movement. All that means no constant diving at the legs.

My point is that the rules trying to prevent constant diving at the legs are only "necessary" because of other factors: low ippon criteria (Suzuki was thrown for yuko at most, leg grabs lack control most of the time ruling out a proper ippon), constant stoppages and way too many passivity penalties (no time to setup proper throws, favors athleticism and "leg grabbers"). Not to mention the obliteration of newaza!
