Ghost World is the novel (graphic or otherwise) of a moment in history (1999-2009?) that should not be forgotten. it's told from a youthful perspective, but it is universally true
Much of the relationships stuff is universal, but really none of the cultural stuff is in the range you mention. It is very in the wake of grunge, and shortly before the whole blonde-glam-pop-luxe-status thing got so big.
The movie sounds terrible, I will never see it. My time period is for the cartoons. The movie sounds like it may very well fit in with '99 - 2009 culturally. Blech.
Yeah, well. As far as these things go they did a good job of turning GW into a film. It's actually got a lot of other 8-ball stuff incorporated into it and it kinda unfolds like a best-of Clowes type of thing, but still. Thora Birch's turn as Enid is excellent.
when the big companies like DC and Marvel see that alternative comics are so great and so deep, they inevitably unload their meaningless bullshit movies to the mainstream to make sure that the mass populace still can't differentiate comic books from superheroes.
Ghost World is funnier than Archie and Veronica

More like '93-'97.
