I think his family went through a lot of ups and downs just like he did and like a lot of people said, Michael would just shut out a lot of people and find new people whom he thought he had a secure environment with but it was never meant to be. I think in the end Michael found it hard to trust anyone, even his family at times. No doubt his family was always there, but families have fall outs here adn there and i dont think his was any different.
