  • I agree this is beautiful music, but it tastelessly mismatched to the scenes in this vid.

  • Good lord if I'm going to die please let it be to the sweet sounds of the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

  • Wow, she was lucky to stay afloat, very sad loss of great men! Thanks for posting this!

  • took one down the pipe and still kept steaming. Respect to the USS enterprise and her crew, she was in good hands that day.

  • song reminds me of fallout haha

  • Does Gene Roddenberry choose "Enterprise" as name of his starship?

  • why play this musis.....AMERICANS ARE DYING.....geez, a bit dramatic dont you think........tard

  • Its sad that the enterprise was sold to scrap metal. The longest lasting US aircraft carrier of WW2.

  • wow never seen this film before , I saw a still pic of the second bomb explosion which was said to have killed the photographer with the blast. thanks for posting this .

Was the Enterprise used in the Bikini Atoll Atomic tests or was it another carrier ?

  • @Baza1964

Saratoga CV-3 was expended as target at Bikini Atoll.

  • @Iturnright Ah ok thanks mate

  • @dpnob1 Yeah I guess they would have wanted video taken of them bursting into flame with the music of the time playing, just like the Americans getting blown up in Iraq and Afghanistan would like to be taped dying to Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga.

  • Why would somebody play this music in the during this video. Americans are dying...

  • @littleredpants The sweet music of the 1940s represents the freedom and way of life our forefathers fought and died for therefore it is most appropriate! You can bet these sailors had that way of life on their mind as they struggled to succeed in the Pacific War.

  • Wow, I never knew that such footage existed.

  • 3:35 there are two smokes rising in the water, maybe those are coming from 2 shot down japanese bombers.i guess

  • Exactly! @riverjohn29

  • Amazing and tragic! I've never seen this footage.

  • bad song choice.

  • Rest in peace all who gave the ultimate price for our freedom. This is personal for me, my grandfather Robert F Reed died on the aft gun turret explosion, along with thirty some other souls. His love of photography and sailing lives on in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His namesake was used for the motor launch of the Genesee Yaht Club in Rochester NY. John L Holt Sr. DP3 USN USS Saratoga CV60 Retired. Father of Christopher Holt MA2, whose comments are found here also.

  • The term "Dramatic" does NOT do proper justice to this memorable footage. I might be mistaken .. but I do believe that second bomb .. the one that exploded so close to the photographer .. actually killed him. Then again it may have been another similar attack, anothere time .. but whichever attack it was .. the subject bomblast on the flightdeck killed the Photographer's Mate 1st Class who was shooting the footage.

  • you could see body parts on the first bomb.... smells like lamb cooking!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the music and to all who served Thank You so much

  • tragic moments

  • poor soldiers was hit full by an bomb 2:20

  • I like sauerkraut and chopsticks.

  • oh, shit! that was solid!!! i could see moving sailors by the side, then the bomb hit....

  • omg man those guys got blown away by a vintage bomb, thats real shit right there damn much respect to the sailers for the big e

  • too bad the original big e isnt around anymore.....

  • nice music

too bad glenn miller was killed in ww2

  • That's war it is. The inevitable consequences of man's sinful nature.

  • thats why i would rather be posted on a BB than on CV. CVs were bomb magnets,,

  • try to behave

  • You aren't called tool for no reason then.....

  • Sieg heil??Wtf?are you kidding me???

  • Poor Wildcat at 1:32.

  • The footage at the beginning showing the SBD's being brought up on the elevator was not from August 42. The red and white strips on the rudder and the red circle in the insignia date those as Battle of Midway (June 42).

The bomb hits are authentic damage suffered in the ES battle. Trivia: the camera operator was killed during the bomb blast on the Flight Deck.

  • I meant to say Pre-Battle of Midway. They were off by Midway.

  • Not according to the wiki entry on this attack and the still from this still. One cameraman died in the first explosion, the second one didn't hurt the cameraman but damaged some of his equipment.

  • scary stuff..poor souls

  • woa- thats one seriously fast elevator...

  • WOW, These Guys Were Awesome.

    THE BIG E....

  • yeah your right man this ship is damn lucky.. but powerfull too!!.. they called this ship big E .... and also lucky E

  • good vid, but id have to say some of the most inappropriate music imaginable

  • The devistation on ship where men are trapped at the mercy of attacking bombers while America sleeps unaware of 12/7/1941 is well contrasted by the gentle music of the day may be the theme. The title of this piece of music describes a massacre of human life by the light of the moon. The roaring serenade by growling Japanese bombers in a dance to the death of the brave men who struggled to survive on both sides. The video sucks but is well done. The truth of how man treats his fellow man.

  • what does war give you, only pain and suffering

  • It keeps you free!

If this country hadn't been defended by men & women like these, including my husband who was on a destroyer in the Pacific, the USS McKee, you would be eating your sauerkraut with chopsticks. That is, if you had anything to eat.

  • @Icedude4 The greatest and biggest leaps in technology have come from war times. War doesn't give you pain and suffering, it brings a country together, and forces them into a new realm they never imaged they'd be in. WW2 gave us the greatest leap in radar, planes, tanks, etc. While the Cold War pushed our planes, and intercontinental defenses farther. You REALLY need to understand your history before you make a bland remark like that.

  • Such courage and valor of those of us who served and sacrificed like this for our country...heroes all. Forever.

  • Nice music fits the scene JK Happy music with terrible tragity o well O BY THE WAY I CANT SPELL TRAGEDY...LOL GREAT VIDEO 5/5

  • The song is by the Glenn Miller Band

Glenn Miller Band - Moonlight Serenade

This is the original 40's version, because the band still plays, newer recordings have been made. I have yet to find the original which just happens to be featured in this video. Either one is good though. Check it out man, you'll enjoy it all.

  • That was amazing...

Thank you for posting this up.

  • this is CV-6 guys, not CVN-65

i think a few people are getting it confused...

  • at 03.04 when the bomb hits the deck it kills Robert Fredric Read who took a picture exacly when it struck and that was the final picture he ever took. Because he died in the explosion.

  • Urban legend. The photo in question is a still frame of this video.

  • I find the music apropo. Graetest warship ship in history by a wide margin. Can't think of another with anything like her combat record. HMS Victory? USS Constitution? Some ancient Greek Trireamme? It would need to be a ship that was taking on the best in the world like Enterprise did. Was Enterprise that good? Lucky? A little of both. "Luck is the residue of good design" and for its time Big-E was the best

  • Well also the last ship the US had before Pearl Harbor.

  • not to be an ass, but did u just say the Enterprise was the last ship before PH??? - Because Hornet was the last prewar carrier built - wasn't finished till after PH.

  • what is with the goddamn music?

  • Interesting footage, though the music was too casual for something like this.

  • My dad was on her and the Lexington. VF-20, the Jokers. He is with the Lord now.

  • your Dad is a hero. I served on the Oriskany 1968. I salute him and all of the Greatest Generation.

  • Requiescat in Pace ...

  • Wow, that is dramatic footage, very interesting to see the attack from Enterprise point of view. Sad to know so many brave men were killed and wounded in this attack.

  • The Big E is the greatest American carrier ever: 20 battle stars, participated in almost every major American naval action of WW2, and won the only British Admiralty Pennant ever given in 400 yrs to a foreign ship. She will be missed, Hooah Big E.

  • Isn't the Big E Still in Service, or has it been retired now?

  • The original CV-6 USS Enterprise (WWII era)was mothballed in the 1950s and broken up around 1960...what a shame as she was THE most decorated US warship of WWII!

  • The nuclear USS Enterprise is still in service, maybe facing retirement. She's still the longest and the fastest, so I've been told, even being over 40 years old. To readers, if that's incorrect, please don't flame, just courteously correct the facts, please. In either incarnation, she is/was a great, proud ship. She actually "starred" in the movie "Hunt for Red October" which is being run a lot on cable because her captain was played by a current Republican Candidate, Fred Thompson.

  • Yep, you got it right. She's up for decommissioning in either 2014 or 2015, depending on when her fuel finally runs out. Let's hope they decide to save this one!

  • even with the recession, the us would be stupid not to preserve the big e this time aound, especially since she's the first nuclear powered carrier

  • She's not the biggest since the Nimitz Class Supercarriers have been built.

  • My father served on "The big E" too. Had great memories of Admiral "Bull" Halsey.

    Historic footage. Thank you.

  • Those memories might be good for a website. I know that I'd read them.

  • The Big E , Edward P. Stafford > Great Book about the Enterprise

  • Read it! Outstanding book! My grandfather served on Enterprise. He was an AA battery director.

  • 've got that book, read it about a million times lol. damn good story

  • I ve heard so much about this growing up, but wow i never in a million years thought i would get to watch it.

  • Remember, that was one brave cameraman to take that film and remain in place even after a bomb went off right in front of him. The music from the era is appropriate, if a bit leisurely for the action. Good post. Well done.

  • does anyone know where this footage came from?

My Great Grandfather Died in this footage his name was Robert F Read photographers Mate 3rd class.

im now in the US Navy and looking for info

  • This footage is available from the 'aircraftfilms' website.

The film package to look for is called "F4F Wildcat" a 2-disc set which includes this and other battle footage from other WWII carriers.

  • Thanks alot!!!

  • cool vid 4 of 5 but the music was odd for the bombing

  • Thanks,

    Reality beats it all...

  • Jesus, 76 men. God bless you all, you are not forgotten.

  • My granfather was under the elevator when it was ejected, He made it home to tell us about it!!!

  • do you happen to have info?? My great grandfather died in this footage he is photographers mate 3rd class Robert F Read?? my family was split up after this and my father was adopted (down the road)well im a true son of son of a saior now in the US Navy stationed in japan and i was wandering were this video came from or any other info in regaurds to this? any help would be great

    MA3 Holt, Chris

    US NAVY

  • Hard to watch, first time I've seen this video. Thanks for sharing.

  • my father was in the Pacific also, thank you sir for the upload.

  • you're terrible

  • Well, I guess you have the right to say that if you are Japanese. But if you are a descendent of one of the many races who were summarily raped, executed, displaced, and forced into labor, or, in general, fell victim to their ruthless imperial occupation; then you are nuts

  • If they had then you wouldn't have been allowed to say that and I will remind you angrymittens that if your are an American. That we didn't start WW1 or 2, we helped bail out the world. If you aren't an American than keep your mouth shut as war is Hell and many sailors died in those sequences, so at least have some respect for the dead!

  • Fffff!!!! Sober and dramatic with these short commentaries. Moving.

  • My father served on the Enterprise during this battle sequence. It's a very personal experience for me.

  • Thank you. I had never seen this before, at least in it's entirety.
