I have been a fan of Jesus Christ Super Star ever since the concept album first came out and I have seen many productions. I do not understand all the criticism of this Pilot. I think he is actually quite good and gives a somewhat different interpretation to the role.

I love that musical version. I think it's much better than the new movie version. Pilate is not as bad as some comment. He looks like George W Bush with Christopher Walken's voice. And he's a roman among jew, that's why he has the accent.
Actually, the portrayal of Pilate in this scene is the worst I've ever heard AND seen. There is some powerful and urgent melody to be sung by Pilate here, all of which has been *shouted* through by this actor/singer and can only be heard in the underlying orchestration, which is a real pity. Seems like the inspiration by the movie has gone too, too far in this case, beyond comparison to both the original movie and studio versions.
The one in the movie is an Actor, not a singer and on this song it works perfectly though, as you said, the most of the song seems to be sung shouting more than singing. But surely i prefere this one than the JCS 2000 with that "Wanna be lirical singer"
Those people represent the whip lashes, man. You can't have both a real whip and visible blood marks without actually lashing the Jesus actor. This whip acting thing is the common way of potraying the lashes in a live performance.
He still sounds like christopher walken---exellent job though...
I saw the Ponchius Pilate in Ted Nealys Farwell show 2007---and he sounded like Al Pachino...dont beleave me, look up Nealy Farewell Tour of JC---and see what I mean...

I hate the concept of the scourging being people going up to scratch him. What the fuck?

It also adds the symbolism of having the crowd scourge him, instead of just the Romans.

Acually in the American tour with Ted Neely there were two guys lashing him.

Hm. Trail before Pilate. It means he's either a hiker or walking behind a horse.
