I work at a Ford Dealership in Austin. Last week I got to see and hear the new 2011 Diesel. There is a huge difference in sound volume between the 2010 6.4L and the new motor. New truck sounds as quiet as a gas truck.
this is a faulty comparison....he's trying to brag up the new 6.7 liter engine,,,but he's comparing it to an old engine before 2008 with the tier 3 regulations. compare that 6.7 liter with the current 6.4 liter, and there probably isn't even a difference.
Is it still not the "new diesel sound" though? I own a 2003 7.3 w/ stacks, stage 1 injectors, daily driver, blah, blah, etc... But loud = 'dirty' to some, I can't get loud enough! Diesel is the future of the US/World and if that means making the new ones quieter... So be it! Drive an older, louder Ford! :-D
Here, here. I like the quiet diesel. Nothing is more annoying than some guy in his, say, 1998 Dodge Diesel pulling up beside you and bah, bah, bah, bah, bah. It's freggin louder than 3 Mack trucks put together. Quiet diesel = good news.
i want mine loud and blowing black smoke, i love watching the environmentalists cringe when they see a diesel drive down the road. You know there are a lot of them bitching about this motor even though its cleaner, quieter, and more fuel effiecient then the 6.4.
What makes it loud is the amount of fuel they put in it. Put more fuel in, makes the explosion inside the compustion chamber louder. Take the fuel away to what ford normaly has this new engine running at, its quiet.
Im pretty sure the duramax was the first to start the whole quiet thing. But I like the old sound.
Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel engine, reduces overall exhaust system volume, which leads to better throttle response for the customer; additionally, reduced exhaust system surface area minimizes heat transfer to the engine compartment and improves NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)
The loud diesel 'knock' noise is due to single shot injection. One injection of fuel per combustion event. Pilot injection leads to quieter injection by utilizing up to 5 or more smaller injections of fuel in the same cycle. Rather than one large loud explosion, there are smaller but more explosions.
its called split injection, instead of one large shot of fuel at injection time, it shoots 2 smaller ammounts at injection thus yeilding a quieter injection noise, you can change this by different tuning in the PCM.
The same engine was making both noises. They just changed how it injected the fuel for the "quiet" sound. They basically told the computer to go from sending one shot of diesel at once, too break it up into many smaller shots.
The old diesel sound was caused by the fuel being injected at one point in time causing a loud injector click and a more harsh combustion, this engine has injectors that injector the fuel in specifically controlled bursts which keeps the injectors from clicking loudly and allows for a more controllable combustion.

What if you like me and you like em' loud?

Pilot injection and EGR use are the major contributors to the new quiet diesels...
cheesebone82 2 years ago
what makes them quiet cause the guy must have hit a switch and if that is so i would take it off to make it loud

will it still come in a standard 6 speed manual

i heard they will all be automatic and wont even be offered in standard, i could be wrong tho
brsox4928 2 years ago
well i like the old but this will have more horse and torque so its all ok

I like loud diesels..like for example..the cummins...1998-2002

i want the old diesel sound!!!...anyways i know sound emission laws must be met....whats the current decibel level at?
DieselDemon18 2 years ago 2
I would definitely get the 2011 over the current gen, but I love the sound of the current gens. diesel.

Can you explain what was done to this diesel to make it so much quieter?

wow. What was causing the old diesel sound?
Intelpentium54321 2 years ago
They have two different modes set up on the injectors that changes the sound on the motor for the demonstration.

one injection per cycle, the new system has "pilot Injection" = 5 injections per cycle
minzbig22 2 years ago
I think it is different injector pulses at idle.
foamybubbles79 2 years ago
instead of single injection ( big shots of fuel ) events, they switched it to 5 injections per stroke ( smaller , timed shots of fuel )
