I love Ronnie i saw her last night on the PBS station on the pop doo wap show.I must say shes as pretty as ever ,she lost weight and got her cute little figure back.I even think she had a little nose surgery,But she need to lose that sweaty raggy weave or wig.I know she wants to keep that Ronettes hair image but come onRonnie go professional, youmusthave the cash.Peace Desiree.
The Rare Masters import miscredits this to the Crystals since it's this version on the album. She performed this last night at an absolutely awesome Xmas show in downtown Mpls. Still sounds like she's 17 and looked not much older than that. I'm still in "Paradise" (the highlight of the show for me). And the great Liberty DeVitto on drums!
There's gotta be a very interesting story surrounding the reasons why this fantastic cut was never released. At the VERY least, it should have been included as a track on "The Ronettes Featuring Veronica" 1964 album. To me this represents the Spector sound at its peak, as well as a terrific showcase for Ronnie and company.
This is just awsome; thanks for this! Why this was never released is beyond me. I'm beginning to think that one of Phil's most notorious crimes is mismanaging the Ronettes back into obscurity.
Thanks a million for posting this ultra rare gem by the Ronettes. I have both the Ultimate Collection and Best of Ronettes but it doesn't feature on either of them. What a joyful tune - love it!
It is on Rare Masters released back in the late 70's on Phil Spector International Label. But sure it was released too late for it to be a hit, which it would have been in '65 I think...!?
Yes, although the video shows Rare Masters Vol.5, according to ian7uk comment below it did in fact go out on Rare Masters Vol.1. Not sure of recording date.
I like all three versions of this song. There is a passage towards the end of the song(Crystals/Ronettes versions)that sounds like a splice from the Crystals' "I Wonder".Anyone else noticed?.
it was darlene love and the blossoms singing backup on "be my baby". they were sometimes credited as the crystals when the real crystals were unavailable, most notably on "he's a rebel"
I think you're right about darlene love and the blossoms singing backup on "be my baby", although a lot of sources say it's the Crystals
And as for He's a Rebel, you are right again -- and I think in that case Phil decided "screw the Crystals, I'm using the Blossoms" and then said "Screw the Blossoms, I'm putting this out with the Crystals' name on the label
This Ronettes version was only issued once, on the UK "Rare Masters Vol. 1" comp in the 70s (where it was mistakenly credited to the Crystals). UK Polydor, who released it, then reportedly lost the tape, which is why it's never been put out again, either on vinyl or CD (unless you count a bootleg Philles 45 that appeared in the 80s). One of the reasons I love this track is because you can hear the Crystals in the background - it's the only time both groups "appear" together on one record!
Thank you so much for uploading this rarity! Spector couldn't decide which version he liked best, the one with Lala Brooks singing the lead vocal or this one, with Ronnie singing the lead (they both feature the same instrumental backing track). Although neither version was released at the time it was recorded (1964), they both surfaced on numerous compilation LPs in the 70s. The Dixie Cups' version of this Barry & Greenwich tune (on the Red Bird label) sounds like an entirely different song.
How did you get a hold of this recording, that's if its not available?

@marcintime the best you can do is to buy the back to mono box set. There's not a single bad track on there.

I think Phil had the Crystals (as well as Cher and others) singing backup on Be My Baby, didn't he?
