Awesome video. Just started myself who said and old dog cant learn. Only have 5hrs in my logbook so far. My boyfriend is a retired navy pilot. He loves your channel.
Nice classics: Cessna 170, Stinson 108-2 and 3, 15AC Sedan, V35 Bon and T-Bone, not sure about the Navion though............I'd rather have an E95 Travel Air.
with today's economy and people here in america have to eat.. a Bonanza or Musketeer, Bonanza more so considering that the complex singles and twins right now are dirt cheap. so look at there prices dropping rapidly soon...
OH MY GOD!! 500 DOLLARS!?!?!?!?!?! I HAVE TO PAY AT LEAST 2000 EUROS (about 2500-3000 dollars) FOR MY F**KING CAR DRIVING LICENSE HERE ON SPAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He talks about $500 in 1950 US dollars, which roughly convert to $5000 in today's money. These days, with some luck, you might be able to get a private pilot license with $5000, but usually you'll have to pay more than that.
I started my training in a Piper Colt, then got my ticket in a Cherokee 140 in 1981. No headsets then! Life certainly was easier prior to the ADIZ and the FRZ...
Don't bet on the VOR radio, B777 Jock! In those days we were still flying colored airways and making LF Range approaches. You know: dit dot, dot dit, or flying the null...
It probably had one VHF communication radio and one VHF (VOR) navigation radio. Fully equipped would have an ADF radio for NDB approaches at airports without a VOR or ILS. This airport appears to be an uncontrolled field. The original salse brochures for the 1950s showed everyone in sport coats, hats, argyle socks and wing tipped shoes, all standard for the day! I flew a 1950 B model Bonanza for about 600 hours in the early 70's without headsets. Great airplane. Try soloing in 10 hours today!
The Cessna in the video is N4627C, a 1953 Cessna 170B (new the year of the video apparently). They didn't use headsets back then, but the overhead speaker and handmike. This airplane is still flying. It probably had one VHF communication radio and one VHF (VOR) navigation radio. Fully equipped would have an ADF radio for NDB approaches at airports without a VOR or ILS. This airport appears to be an uncontrolled field. Avgas was about .35 a gallon or less in some places.
I trained on a 170 Cessna just 2 years ago. Not much has changed except for the money.

Wow, flying a 140 in a suit and brimmed hat must have been pretty tough. Gotta love the "Man from New York" dialogue too. What a treasure...

Wow,... 500 bucks! I earned my certificate this year for 10x that! Great experience, and worth every cent. Thanks for posting the video!
