You know a music group is near the end of their rope when their doing Tv add for commercial items like kool-Aid. Whatever they were paid it wasn't enough to make them look like fools, which they do here. No wonder Peter Tork quite. It's kind of a shame, after all those snappy tunes, The Monkees would crawl to this level. Just pitiful...
Notice that Peter Tork wanted nothing to do with the group? When I saw them at the Pacific Colesium (no spell check - so SUE me!!) in Vancouver in 1969, it was only Mike, Mickey & Davie. The Buddy Miles Experience, the anti-Viet Nam folks handed out flyers outside before the concert began. I was 14, my sister Colleen was 13 and it was the first thing we went to see alone, without our parents hanging around.

So...basically Kool-Aid is a drug that made young men go around and do stupid stuf like ride around in little go-karts with stupid grins singing "GET FRESH WITH KOOL AID!"
Great!!! I was in this commercial. It was filmed at Belmont Park in San Diego in Feb. of 1970. The park is gone but the roller coaster is still there. I just remember drinking warm watery Kool Aid for two days while it was filmed. Oh... I think Peter Tork had left the group by then and was not in the commercial...Thanks for posting!!
Sadly, Mike left the group a month later, and only Micky and Davy were the only ones left when they did the album "Changes" which came out in the summer of 1970.
Michael Nesmith isn't missing...he's the first one who speaks in the clip, and you see shots of him here and there all throughout. It's Peter Tork who's missing.

I got the end and was totally waiting for Micky to pour that trophy of Kool-Aid (though it was probably empty) all over Davy. Anybody else?

It's hard to believe we used to have to ADD sugar to things, lol

The Monkees were always cool, even when pushing Kool-Aid.

hopefully Davy's hair didn't light on fire like that unfortunate MJ pepsi incedent :/
I remember seeing a kool-aid commercial with the Monkeys and bugs bunny on a DVD once. I think it was from 1969.

I believe this is the last time Mike Nesmith appeared with the Monkees.
So it's kinda historic.

Where's Bugs Bunny?
I guess he taught them enough about "making friends" with Kool Aid.

"Let's make new sugar-sweetened Kool-Aid with the sugar already in it!"
Redundant, much?
smittykins 4 years ago
lol. the 70's man, the whole decade was redundant.
bully129 4 years ago
Actually, prior to this time you had to add a cup of sugar to the mix. This was one of the roll out commercials introducing pre-sweetened Kool Aid.

I didn't catch that...funny. Who writes that stuff? HaHaHa!!!
I love Micky!

Anyone else notice that these are the helmets/ outfits Davy and Micky are wearing on the back of the Changes album cover?

Neato. Until now I'd only ever seen this commercial in black and white, and I'd never seen the very end with Micky talking.

@drummerbraves There was an industry joke at the time that after whoever left next, the remaining member would continue as "the Monkee."

I feel for Mike Nesmith though! He's too cool for this guff! :D
SarahIgnite 4 years ago
My thoughts exactly, this is more of a Mickey thing, I think Davey might be too cool for this and that's saying a lot!!!
krushvelvet67 4 years ago
Micky handles the schmooze well... the man's a consummate professional. ^-^
Davey barely gets a line! Must be his turn to be the 'strong silent type'!
