  • Esta canción me ha acompañado toda mi vida (55 años) y le estoy muy agradecido a Leonard por haberle puesto música y sentimiento a mi vida. Vida eterna para Leonard Cohen.

  • Leonard is a sort of a man you wish to be immortal. You can't put a stop to his beautiful music. I shudder to think that there will be a stopping point of his music. Instead of Dear Heather, i'll sing DEAR LEONARD....

  • de schoonheid van de romantisiteit...

    Muy buena!

  • Cool

  • He said GodLIKE, not God...and I don't see anything wrong with that. LC really does seem to transcend humanity with his achingly beautiful songs...

  • Spot saying awful stupid things... Cohen is not God... just a great poet, desperate and in love with the Woman in his head... hence, a good-hearted womanizer...

  • godlike...

  • Thanks, thanks, thanks.....!!!! :-)

    Montse

  • never heard leonard cohen thats what you tube is best for, sharing music new and old.

  • Thank you a million times for posting this.

  • Lyrically (is that a word?)lol, probably one of my favourite songs. Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell have beautiful well written songs.

  • mi fa sognare...

  • Una de las mas bellas canciones de los años 60..gracias a todos aquellos que hicieron este mundo

    un poco mejor...

  • This man is a legend like Bob Dylon: they are sailors, hearing the wind, telling us that we have to learn of live... and God in that few years that we are here...

  • just out... Leonard Cohen "Im Your Man" Movie.

  • Cohen sings this song beautifully. So does Joan Baez and lots of wonderful artists. Thanks for posting this flick! Cohen rocks, he's gorgeous too.

  • If this becomes an issues about Jews, You have completely missed the point.

The fact he is Jewish is so completely unrelated, you have clearly signified yourself as biased by bringing it up.

  • What a cool song.

  • I thought something was amiss here! Sorry to hear about your troubles with e-stalker, Robert. I just thought lordsovereign was confused or crazy or something. I thought she was a ranting lunitc. lol.

    Good luck!

And lordsovereign, please leave! This is nolt the place for those kinds of ugly posts. If robert blocked u, then respect his choice & stop harrassing him!

  • ?????

  • bad comment column

please drink orange (pekoe) tea - the song might touch you

  • for gods sake what is wrond with you people cant you just enjoy the damn song....stop trying to dicect everything....leonard cohen said that the only thing you can do to fully understand his work is to not takeit too seriously

  • THANK YOU !!! I dont know who or what you are, but Let me give you a hug! I could not agree with you more... I cant stand all of these "drop-out" music critics! Bless You! Charles in Atlanta GA

  • it seems some of you have never been her lover

  • There are so many good songwriters, cohen, dylan, lennon but my favorite songwriter has to be Jacques Brel :)

  • aye, simply listen and open your mind

  • people wake up

  • The prostitute theme of this video seems to conflict with the fundamental lyrics and message of this song.

  • "Bringing Families Home!"

My reply below was aimed at 'The5thAngelRose'

  • What's the thing with the sperm image?

  • and pleas take the meaforic message of that. ´jesus was not a sailer but he walked on the water, jesus was a leader (not in a wooden tower but the message is this) jesus was killed, not broken but crucified. take the metaphoric message please. little dude. ;)

  • Good one, Blues. Humor is an important sign of higher intellect.

The odd thing about metaphors is that of the millions of readers or listeners, the only one knowing the truth is the author/poet.

  • that´s the cool in poetry, every one has his interpretation, if the interpretation is pertinent you can find a world between 20 words. mister ungaretti knows well that: this is an italian poem:

M´illumino d´immenso. find the correct traslation 8too difficult for my english) and tell me.4 words :)

  • Remember my new Italian colleague, a small mind is easy to fill.

  • really my friend,chill down...

  • International dis-intelligence needs to corrected else we'll end up with the multiple middle crises moving west.

Wise up romber, before its too late. People like me can't cover for you your whole life, you know?

You'd have to lay on ice for 72 hours to be as chilled as I am. No brag, just fact.

  • "Bringing Families Home!"

You really are a condescending arrogant little pseud aren't you! (Leading edge perspectives from the trailing edge position) Ha! My arse.

  • Yes, please remove your head from your arse so we can continue. I can't make a word out of what you are saying with your head up there.

  • scusami, faccio quel che posso col mio inglese. ;)

sorry, i´m trying to do whatever i can with my pasta-english :)

  • You are doing very well. No problem...

By the way, I will be in Torino this week.

    Caio

  • why nobody comes to visit trient? i live there ;) do you like neil young?

  • that´s right but only if the mind is opened to changes its own thoughts.

  • the king of folk singers. he leads the rest follow!!!!

  • amazing. there's no more words to say

  • Love it and have done so for years

  • leonard cohen en español ya!!!!

  • Love Cohen.

  • i think that cohen is one of the three best songwhriters ever:

they are L. cohen, F. de Andrè and G. Brassens

  • Rig-g-g-g-ht.

Lennon and McCartney can't hold a candle to your three best songwriters. Forget Andrew Lloyd Webber or Roger Waters, too.

  • waters is as a poetry as jesus as evil, webber is a great composer but the poetry is low in his songs...

  • LOL...dudettte. This goes on and on: dylan, H.Chapin, Brian Wilson, etc. etc.

Leonard is in the top 100; that much is sure.

    Take this song for example:

    Jesus was not a sailor

Jesus never went up in a wooden tower.

    Jesus was never broken.

Go to school, little man. Come back when you are an adult and we can talk then.

  • have you ever listened to de andre? or to francesco de gregori? please don´t talk about something without lisdtening, and without know what is a metric construction and aborring what is the poetry in a song, not the music or the feelings of lirics i´m talkin´only of poetry, sure waters is a good arranger and composer but when i talk o´f metric cohen is one of the best. one of the 20 best ever and one of my three favourites.

  • The neat thing about this country is that even people like you who are totally wrong are allowed to express their OPINION.

By every measure and metric, Cohen eats Water's dust.

Leonard is fortunate to have such blind followers.

  • suzanne takes you down

to her place near the river

you can hear the boats go by

you can spend a night beside her

so, so you think you can tell

    heaven from hell

    blue skies from pain

can you tell the green field

from acold steel rail a smile from a veil

i´m an high school ITALIAN student and you are discussing with me, a dumb would hear the difference

  • As you are an Italian student, I guarantee you lack the world experience to even begin to relate to Waters. You lack the knowledge.

As far as poets go, off the top of my thoughts Bob Dylan, Sting, and Kristoferson are far greater than Cohen. Leonard writes so much stuff that like a blind squirrel, he finds a nut every now and then.

    Ciao.

  • I said that because i´m not english mother tongue. that´s the matter, and if a donßt mother tongue can feel the difference, a mother tongue HAS to do it!!!

that´s my opinion and this will. maybe i change in the future (i´m approacching to my opinions similar as kant done) so DEGUSTIBUS. every one has his own favourites, but you wouldn´t include cohen as one of the 20 best? tell me only this. ;) then i´ll stop, because i hate people that feels superior to the others.

  • Great question:

I would absolutely put Cohen in the TOP 8 poet/singers.

  • What a silly discussion to be having. Everybody knows that Tom Waits is the greatest poet as well as the greatest musical genius of our times. Sure, Cohen, Waters, Dylan etc. are great poets, but they do not compare to Waits, not by a long shot.

  • Waits isn't qualified to carry out Dylan's garbage. You are right Waits does NOT compare to Dylan by a long shot; He never will be attain the same stratospheric level of Dylan.

Provide some objective measurement or metric and we'll listen to your drivel.

There now are 3-4 different generations singing or reciting Dylan's words.

  • Haha, why do you get so agitated and start making personal attacks, huh, cockboy? In any case it's a matter of taste. In my personal opinion (and thousands upon thousands of other people's personal opinions) Waits is one step above everyone else as far as lyrical genius goes. And as far as musicality goes, there is really nothing to discuss. Dylan is a great lyricist, but he can't sing, plain and simple. I enjoyed reading his memoirs much more than I ever enjoyed listening to his music.

  • Listen, Butt Wart, I agree Waits has thousands of supporters. Using that metric, Dylan has MILLIONS. For under educated blokes like you, that would be 1,000 times your thousand.

Regarding your arse, take your head out of it so your brain can get some oxygen. The brain operates on oxygen.

  • I never claimed these rappers motivated social change, I was just trying to point out the folly of assuming that poetry can be objectibely measured, but you're so busy gyrating on your personal hero's genitals that you take any statement that goes contrary to your own opinion as a personal attack. You crack me up. Like I said, as far as lyrical genius goes, it's a matter of taste, but calling Dylan a great singer or an innovative musician is just plain dumb.

  • Yes, you would know about "cracks" given where you keep you head.

Oh yes, good poetry is subjective. That is what duh-educated mindless twits such as yourself can ONLY say because you don't know any better.

You're fun to converse with because it's like talking to a 5 year old.

Did you say you like personal taste? Here, taste this, pal...

  • LMAO, just realized that I'm talking to 53-year-old, who gets seriously upset just by the fact that some people don't agree that Dylan is the most amazing person to grace the earth since Jesus Christ. A 53-YEAR-OLD, who can't control his temper, because other people admire different singers than he does??!! LOL, grow up son.

  • And by the way, you want an OBJECTIVE MEASURE for poetry/lyrics? Are you severely retarded? In that case neither Dylan nor Waits are anything special. If you want to be able to objectively judge poetry you would have to use parameters like who can write the best multisyllable rhymes, in which case rappers like Kool G Rap, Cormega, Main Flow etc. would have absolutely no competition. Objective measures my ass.

  • You are too under educated to grasp the concept, toad boy.

Oh, yes, KGR and Cormega will be known for how they motivated political, social, and musical change.

  • Damain loves Suzanne!

  • orginalt

  • I don't know, suzanne doesn't look like she has much personality bro, you should look for maybe another gal

  • anybody have this version in italian? im longing for to see it.

  • the italian version is by Fabrizio De Andrè...i'm also searching for it on YouTube...but the cohen's version is the best!!!

  • heeeel mooi .. favorited!

  • hey Marretje, mooi he ???

    knuffieee....

  • una de mis canciones favoritas desde siempre, aunque nunca habia visto el videoclip, gracias por colgarlo.

One of my favourites songs ever

  • one of the best gigs ive ever been to was leonard cohen the mans a genious

  • amazing song...i like to write the lyrics out by hand and just look at them and read them as if they were my own...this song is sacred...if i ever have a daughter or a dog or something i'll name it suzanne

  • Just whatever you do don't name your boy sue.

  • LOL.

  • Wonderfull.real classic that stands the test of time.

  • awesome video

  • Leonard Cohen is pure genius.Thank you for that song and many others.I agree with the opinion that he's one of the greatest poets of the 20'th century.

  • All hail King Leonard Cohen. There can be only one.

  • listen to his prophetic verses and it will trap a moment of time in your life which you can revisit over and over again.....play this artist over and over on a holiday so you can be transported back to there when you are feeling down.....try it 'cos it works

  • He's not dead yet and he's had plenty of recognition.

  • Classical Leonard Cohen ...

  • It's sad that so many artists don't get the recognition they deserve until they die, we just don't appreciate the here and now enough!

  • Leonard Cohen is one of the great poets of the 20th century. It's a shame that he hasn't had more recognition. I mean the guy is a legend, but he really deserves some kind of distinction. I vote for poet leaureate.

  • beautifully done ;)

  • profound. tell me about a time, when you trusted a lover, with your perfect body... to his mind.

Very delicate, very profound words. No match for LC

  • How beautiful can one song be, my god.

  • what happend to his voice,,,, i know he got older but still ,,,, i much prefer his voice now (secret life, dance me to the end of love) voice

  • beautiful song, but this video is horrendous.

  • I thank God I lived this long to see such an incredibly touching video on one of my most favorite songs of all time. God bless you, Mr. Cohen.

  • 1st turned on to Mr.Cohen, spring of '72 at college by a roomate...lyrics, lyrics,lyrics....

  • Boooooooooring

  • Perfect, it's incredible

  • Best song ever

  • This song is perfect. I am now 55 and I still remember the first time i listened to Leonard Cohen in sixth form around 1976.

  • Great

  • masterpiece

  • kto moze sie z nim rownac?

  • The beautiful, most heartfelt lyrics ever written. Bravo, Mr. Cohen.

  • What a masterpiece. Artists these days are too commercialized

  • Grande, muy grande

  • A perfect classic - nuclear_chicken

  • Nina Simone did a beautiful cover of this song. I think its on the Golden Album.

  • Neil Diamond did a cover on his 1972 Stones album. Lee Holdridge did the orchestral arrangment on that version. Much more up-tempo with excellent guitar, strings, and piano.

  • Classic song, one of my all time favourites. The video is poor too, except for the picture on the wall. I imagined something very different. Cohen still rocks though as he is a truly great songwriter.

  • I think its an ok video and a great song. Leonard Cohen is amazing no matter what video he's on but I agree they could have done a better job.

  • I love this.

  • robert7777777, how about,

"despite the hostility of MOST orthodox rabbis, zionism aroused considerable enthusiasm among many orthodox jews who saw in it the promise of the long-awaited messianic redemption." ie. founders of zionism were simply imperialists, & so "MOST orthodox rabbis" were AGAINST creating a jewish state, especially as it is expressly forbidden in their scriptures [untill the comming of the messiah].

  • My deepest apologies to all. I am seriously being e-stalked by an insane & racist poster named lordsovereign, who keeps posting anti-Israel and anti-Jewish slogans. She believes that Jews are religiously complelled & indoctinated to rape babies & cheat, enslave, and murder gentiles (she posts fake religious passages that don't actually exist). I have blocked her from my e-mail, but she keeps harrassing me. She saw this video on my favorites & is now posting here! I'll report her to utube.

  • Lordsovereign,

you're an idiot. this is NOT the place for ur stupid theories about Jews.

Robert, I too have seen the propaganda about Jews being permitted to cheat and rape, with false quotes. They are posted all over this site by idiots.

And Lord sov, you'll note that L. COHEN is jewish. AND there is a famous picture of him playing for the Israeli army. So go somewhere else, moron. We don't hate Jews or Israelis here!

  • lordsovereighn, go away you are bugging everyone. We hate no one here. Not Jews, not israelis, not Palestinians. We are here to hear music. We are not here to impugn anyone's faith or nationality. Take ur vitriol and your politics somewhere else, please.

  • I would have rathered not see a depiction of Suzanne. She always served best, I found, as this ideal we all strive for, that manifests itself in ways different then we'd first imagined. Like beauty itself I suppose. The video was pretty cheesy, but that's OK, because it's Leonard. I grew up on his music, and love his stuff passionately. *shudders* That was a pretty bad video though.

  • One from My own favorite

  • what a ridiculous video for a perfectly good song. too bad.

  • Yes this was broadcasted on Belgian (Flemish) national TV. The subtitles are in Dutch.

  • Yes, the subtitles are in dutch - I 'm from Holland :-)

  • But I now think it's subtitled by a Belgian - it doesn't quite resemble dutch :-)

  • Dutch as in Holland. I think Cohen has a big following in the Netherlands

  • <
