As for Olympic TKD he is great. He thinks several techniques ahead and changes mid stream. I'm sure if you take a good Olympic TKD guy, and cross train him in Muay Thai or Grappling or Boxing, they would adjust. I have. The hardest work is already done. This kid has conditioning, work ethic, and coordination.

WTF is trained not to punch in sparring. They'll tell you that in a real fight, they will use punches as well as kicks, but that isn't possible. They've been trained to respond and attack in a certain way (hands down by the waist, genitals exposed to attack, and bouncing like bobble heads) and when put into a situation where you need to use those skills your body will revert to its training.

thats not true taekwondojock, they practice high kicks to kick the head. Although you learned to hit midsection you want to knock someone out quickly so the higher you kick the easier you can reach someones head who is way taller than yourself

taekwondo may have beautiful high kicks but why do people think that that is all there is to taekwondo? i practice wtf style taekwondo and in self-defense we practice low and midsection kicks, hand strikes, knee strikes and elbow strikes which are useful on the streets. the flashy kicks are only practiced in sport taekwondo sparring.

Besides... you can be a robot that can do this and that, but if you want to be "water in the cup" - look into other arts, and do meditate on the stuff.. just sit and viualize and let the mind play with techniques and scenarios. It helps to cement it in your mind, so it is there automatically when needed ;P

I'll commend taekwondo on the skill it takes to do some of its techniques with such percision, but not for self defense. lol They don't even keep their guard up, and if someone threw a few punches while they started kicking they'd just fall. Good for sport, bad for street.

First of all,Taekwondo fighters do keep their guard up. If you haven't noticed, this was a tournament for points. This was fought in WTF style. The main focus is on the kicks. Do your research before you down play a martial art discipline.

They really don't keep their guards up. Watch their hands. They're never guarding their face. Sure, it may be for points, and silly taekwondo won't let you punch to the face, but keeping your arms up is just good form. Especially when a kick comes at your head. I've done enough research, and I'm sure many would back me in saying that taekwondo fighters don't last long on the street.

I know I'm a year late for a reply, but i just resist not putting in my two cents. All I can say is that a true Taekwondo practicioner on the street would be stupid to not guard his/her face or punch anyone in the grill. Like Biggersvader said, that is tournament style focusing on kicks(WTF style), whereas ITF style is more defensive and fighters can punch the face. In the gym/schools rules are respected, but out in streets rules are mere shit.

at first i didnt like taekwondo i thought it was too formal but after i went to taekwondo classes i was surprized its very good and useful in real situations plus the kicks give the user a long reach hit over all i think its somthing every1 should learn it but i always give every martial arts a chance

Hey tough guys - TKD is not the UFC. it's a sport of skill and technique and is a competition for sportsman. lets face it, flashy skills are entertaining. this guy puts on a good show whether he is fighting smart or not. you can still win with flashy kicks. if i had his speed and balance, i would have been just as flashy. everyone wants to win, but let's admit it - we want to see action. you can see that he is good enough to land flashy kicks. that's entertainment.
