LOL yeah my first batch I just used the carboy bottle with lid and thought I could release the pressure by opening the cap part way every now and then but when I went to bed and didnt do it all night when I woke up to release the pressure I ended up having a kitchen full of wort from ceiling to fridge all over from pressure build up . took me a couple hours to clean.. and lost the batch of beer. it is well worth buying a airlock. just thought id share my funny beer story about airlocks.
Ummm The airlock is to release the pressure created by the fermentation process. If you dont use an airlock you can use a tube that is ran from the top of the Fermenting bucket to a bowl of water/sanitizer on the floor. w/o either of these your bucket will fill w/ pressure and explode so yeah you kinda need it.

hey im about to start brewing beer, what is the airlock used for, and does it really need to be used for brewing beer? and what happens without it

I think it lets the air out without the germs being able to get back in.
