To my understanding they were oppressed under Emperor Haille Selassie. Many Eritreans were killed or disappeared and that fuelled their war of independence. Also Eritrea was colonized by Italy who made Eritrea look like Europe so there is also that pride factor and that they believe they are better than the rest of Ethiopia.

In May 1998, Eritrean forces launched an attack against Ethiopia. "The international commission in the Hague has ruled that since there was no armed attack against Eritrea, its attack on Ethiopia could not be justified as lawful self-defence under the United Nations charter and is therefore liable to compensate Ethiopia for damages caused." @artsylovelylady don't listen to BahreNeGash's propaganda. Eritreans and Ethiopians are the same people. There are a couple of reasons why they chose to separate. To my understanding they were oppressed under Emperor Haille Selassie. Many Eritreans were killed or disappeared and that fuelled their war of independence. Also Eritrea was colonized by Italy who made Eritrea look like Europe so there is also that pride factor and that they believe they are better than the rest of Ethiopia.

Nobody knows what the exact number of casualties and losses are. The Eritrean government obviously would exaggerate the number of Ethiopian deaths but whatever the amount more Eritreans died as the Ethiopian army is far more disciplined and well equipped. Afewerki claimed 19, 000 Eritreans died. Really wth?!!! but the West knows it was hundreds of thousands. Now Eritrea is ten times poorer than Ethiopia.

We are not in 2010. Ethiopia and Eritrea rank 3rd fastest growing economies for 2011 after Qatar and Ghana - Economist.
Anyways the only reason as to why Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as other African countries seem to have fast growing economies is because they are coming from the very bottom while everyone else is already developed. But as long as these two countries are run by corrupt leaders (Zenawi and Afewerki) they will never grow in the long run.

I find it stunning that the Eritreans held out against a nation with such a numerical and (on paper) military advantage for as long as they did in the border conflict.
Though truth be told, the Ethiopian generals were astoundingly incompetent. Throwing human waves against trenches didn't work for Iran back in the 80s against Iraq, or on the Western Front of World War I. One can only hope this kind of thing never happens again.

Well as everybody know, Eritrea have good army but there is no way to compare with Ethiopia. Ethiopian troop is number one in Africa. we have seen them what they did with Eritrea, Somalia and so many where too. Don't feel that i'm side for Ethiopia. i love all African country

I read some of your comments on youtube and wonder if you ever care to look into the facts regarding any of the issues you care to talk about (especially the last Ethio-Eritrean war). I don't intend on doing an in-depth analysis of the war, but i will direct you to some facts. None of this matters but i had a little free time so why not. Let's go back to how it started though.

In May 1998, Eritrean forces launched an attack against Ethiopia. "The international commission in the Hague has ruled that since there was no armed attack against Eritrea, its attack on Ethiopia could not be justified as lawful self-defence under the United Nations charter and is therefore liable to compensate Ethiopia for damages caused." Had it not been for such strong pressure, you would have seen Ethiopian forces marching down downtown Asmara. So please, don't waste your time lying to yourself and others. You and I, as well as Eritreans living in Eritrea, and of course Ethiopians, know that Ethiopia taught Eritrea a good lesson - don't pick a fight you can't win. But then again, you free to express yourself unlike in Eritrea so go ahead and lie to yourself.

@dafrow Do you know why the War was considered a stalemate, even though Ethiopia Occupied 25 percent of Eritrean Territory? Yes--- Because Ethiopia lost over 200,000 men. If they continued to march 2 Asmara, Ethiopia would have no Army- Buddy. I guess 25 percent of our land was fertilized by 200,000 men. Thanks to our Strong Self-Reliant Military.

And to repeat the quote from Meles, the next time you even think of starting a war, "we will make certain that Asmara would never, ever dream of even entertaining or thinking about war again." All I was saying to BahreNegash (and now you) is to please read up on all the facts before sounding your misinformed horn. My post below is supported by facts (i included the dates and reliable sources like BBC and CNN). I am not just shooting off the mouth like you and some other people on this site. The reason for the confusion in numbers is because alot of credible sources(eyewitness) report that over a hundred thousand Ethiopians died. 123-150. mst likely 200k. But Meles refused to speak (?)
