I saw an interview with Edge. It was during Numb. The interviewer asked why Edge didn't sing more lead. Edge replied something like, but what would Bono do then?
As a listener it's kind of sad that we don't here Edge sing more, I think.
@perfuzz couldn't agree with you more my friend. For whatever the reason I have never been able to work out why Edge as a vocalist has not featured more in the history of U2 other than a remarkable guitarist. Guess some egos are best left unchallenged for the sake of the music.
Bono's lyrics have always been both extraordinary and so heartbreakingly ordinary. But this song, even by those standards, is a work of beauty. It's like he took the idea he began with with Exit, and just took completely away with it. And the choice of Johnny Cash, with his crackling voice singing those lyrics- genius. After the fact, hearing Bono's young-despite-my-age voice singing the song is beautiful.
I love love love all versions of this song, hearing it with Bono on vocals is differnet, but I like it. I'm glad he stuck in his register and just made it his a little, beautiful. Nobody is Johnny cash, as he said, but I'll take this tribute to him any day.
Great lyrics too. I think one of the reasons Joaquin talks about why Johnny Cash (and U2 as well!) seem(s) so convincing and authentic is that they knew that their own "demonic" sides and doubts are indivisible connected to their christian faith. Maybe this is one of the reasons why they never sound like religious nuts or fanatics and why so many extremely different people can relate to them. In the Video to "God's gonna cut you down" Bono sprays a graffiti saying "Sinners are the best saints".
I was wtching the program tribute to JC when they performed this, it was the first time i'd heard the tune, so I went out and listened to JC singing it, I found a brand new love for the legend. also I had no clue Edge could hit those high notes and maintain them so lovely. kudos to the poster.
I only recently discovered that this song was featured in one of my favorite movies and was always curious as to how it would sound with Bono as singer. Thanks for uploading! :)
This is incredible, The Edge can sing any backing to any song brilliantly... oh yeah, he can INVENT a new guitar sound for it too!! To anyone who wants to criticize, this is a song written for J Cash sung only once live (that I am aware of.. this particular time) in tribute to Johnny Cash for a song that JC recorded with U2 in probably '93, if you hate it...pick up a guitar, or a pen, or a drumstick, or start yelling into a microphone and do better... yeah, I thought so... shut the hell up!!!
MrLesPaul. Ya know what, I apologize for what I wrote, I drank 20+ beers and was being kind of a dick... but from your response, you seem like a cool dude for not being a dick back... thanks for the understanding... and understanding about me not being able to find what you originally wrote (two bottles of wine tonight!) that I was seemingly so pissed at you about... I love this song.... and this version to me is amazing... sorry to be a dick.... YOU ARE COOL! sorry to be an asshole to you!
I HATE fucking U2 they suck! I bet I can make a better band then U2! I want to kill every one who likes U2!!!
if I were in charge of the world I'd create an army to destroy U2!!! And then I'm going to kill the person who invented U2! Plus make it illigle to listen U2 because I hate U2! I want this nation to be a better nation...
*Evil smile* No U2 or any of there CD's sold in any stores! I want to be the next Hitler
Hearing this (and Van Deimen's Land from Rattle and Hum, not to mention him on 2 Hearts Beat as One) makes me wonder how many more songs the Edge could have sung over the years. He's a fantastic backup singer. I'm glad he stuck with U2 all these years, but he clearly had the talent to make a name for himself as well after all these years on his own. I hope he sings more songs (solos) on future u2 records.
I'm a hardcore Atheist, but this song gets to me, I think maybe the search for "God" is something a lot bigger than God, and this song is so wonderful. It's not really about the search for god, It's about the search that can never be finished, maybe because it the goal doesn't exist, but that doesn't at all diminish the power and beauty of the journey.
Oh as if! It's the religious people that will, on their deathbeds, realized they wasted their "livees". And ya wanna know why?? Cause they were so very busy wasting their one wild and previous life on earth by not "sinning", trying to be perfect, and generally having no fun whatsoever. They just wasted their lives waiting to go to heaven, and then, on their deathbed they realize there is no heaven and they wasted their only life.
U2, God bless you and your souls. Your music and your mission. God bless Cash. See you in heaven where we can sing to our father together, maybe earlier :)
no need to put any 'spin' on their version of this song , bono wrote it for j.cash, they played he sang it, another of their great songs, with a collabarator, he is now gone and bono took over, and fuck what a great job he has done in place of the jail house rocker, all round brilliant.
Wow! Bono is proving himself not only to be a great talent, but a great man! This is an awesome tribute to J.Cash, may his soul rest with Love/God! :c)
i am so so sorry! my son got on when i left the computer and made that remark! i love u2 and johnny cash so very much! especially this song! i just scolded him about it. once again, so sorry!

"With a Bible and gun" changed by politically correct Bono to "With a Bible and the sun". What a schmuck globalist mouthpiece and a dishonor to Johnny.
Maybe Bono was "wandering" in England. Seriously though I think it makes more sense with the "American" version. The Bible to protect one spiritually, the gun to protect against physical enemies. Otherwise, isnt "The Son" already in the Bible? Just my 2c.
politically correct? what shite are you talking? this is a band that stil plays sunday bloody sunday, a song about the troubles in ireland. and that is hardly the most politically correct song ever. and another thing, johnny cash is not a god. you seem to have put him up on a pedestal. he was no saint. he made great tunes, but he wasnt a saint.
he has a point man, Sunday Bloody Sunday was if you look at it, is a really politically correct song. I think Bono is a great performer but he's never going to come out and talk about anything else than Africa.
the attitude or policy of placing the interests of the entire world above those of individual nations.
so is being a globalist a bad thing? the way you said it, it seems as though it is. is it not selfish of the western countries namely america and britain to keep taking money of africa?
he is actually trying to end the debt of africa, which has unfairly been taken adavntage of by western countries. from the outside looking in, it may seem that he is an annoying do-gooder. but if he get the debt cancelled these undeveloped african countries can finally start to progress. whats wrong with that? at least he is doing something, hes making us aware of it. why does it always get criticised for this?
Dont' be an ass, the lyrics were composed by Bono, He wrote that line and can change it, whenever he wants. I doubt your affirmation, you could be deaf or something.
I'm a big u2 fan but there is no excuse for bono's fake guitar or edges vocals, whats that all about? don't remember that on the original, great fuckin song though
kellykinsel. too bad you can't write sensible words anymore. show me an artist around today that can write a song like sometimes you can't make it on your own
Bono's fans like seeing him hold his "Goal is Soul" quitar...he doesn't have to play it! As far as, he's writing ability...you have to have heart, and know Bono to understand his lyrics! You know if you don't anything nice to say...keep it to yourself.
So yeah Kelly wheres the stuff you written lately? This is youtube video, please share with us. Uh, I don't recall seeing you play anything lately so post that too. Last 2 U2 albums won numerous grammys and many of those were written by Bono along with Edge. You must obviously be a Timberlake/Brittney Spears kinda fan and too too young to know great art.
You are so superficial. You wouldn't know a good song if it came up and smacked you in the face. Your day will come when you will go out wandering. It comes to us all. One day you will realize that.
bono wrote this song and gave this song as gift to johny cash, The zooropa album. I like how Johnny cash sings it like a singing as a preacher giving a sermon
This is the best version!

Great fake guitar playing Bono! He is the best at pretending like he can play the guitar. Too bad he can't write a good song anymore
kellykinsel 5 years ago

I like how Johnny cash sings it like a singing as a preacher giving a sermon
very cool..
