the real problem is the camera-enforced traffic signal at Sloat. The timing on that signal is unfair. The yellow light is way too short. They just put those cameras there to generate revenue for the city, not for any safety reasons.
I've seen it all before. I usually frequent 19th Avenue. I am glad that the police are cracking down on speeders. I hope to see them trying to control reckless driving. Also people who block the intersection should really clear the way or they will create a gridlock, if the light changes, the other traffic can't get across or the emergency vehicles can't get through. There is a reason why you have to clear the way, or get ticketed.
And again, you are misquoting me. I once again assert that drivers must try to stop and not hit jaywalking pedestrians. Even a jaywalking pedestrian has right of way, and drivers must try to stop. Yes, jaywalking is stupid and illegal. However, you can't just run over a jaywalker with impunity because they are breaking that law. That's against the law. Common sense, no?
The Jaywalker does not have the right of way if they are in an active roadway...however you are right on the fact that the driver must still use common sence and not run the jaywalker over.
Some idiot walked out in 20 feet front of me from behind a bus not paying attention. Luckily I was and avoided hitting him. I was also going only about 20 mph because I do go slow when there are lots of people around. Needless to say, I was pretty mad because people would be on MY ass if I hit him.
I like this video it makes many good points. The only thing is when you mention the pedestrian when she is stuck. That is there for a reason and you say how its the LAW to stop for pedestrians and you did not stop for her. With or without the cross walk she has a right of way!! :) just make sure you follow your own rules! Love your videos antway.
Pedestrians only have the right of way in a crosswalk. If a pedestrian simply walks out in front of moving traffic, there is no law that will protect them.
Even if a pedestrian is jaywalking, cars are still legally required to yield to them. If a driver doesn't yield to a jaywalker, then both the pedestrian AND the driver can get tickets.
A pedestrian only has the "right of way" in a properly marked crosswalk. Again, if someone walks out in traffic, they do not have the right of way. basis law 101, agree with it or not.
itsmememe, if you are a driver in California, please take a cab to the nearest DMV and voluntarily surrender your drivers license. "Right-of-Way at Crosswalks V.C. Section 21950. (a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection."
Ok, AGAIN, -a pedestrian ONLY has ROW in a CROSSWALK (ok, or at an intersection where it is obvious that they should be crossing, specifically, a "crosswalk" area) But like I said, pedestrians do NOT simply have the right of way over automobiles on the roadway, they are not allowed to walk out in traffic legally, thats jaywalking, and illegal. Please at least attempt to comprehend the law before you continue to post so blatantly ignorant.
I enjoy most of these video's, but some really seem to nit pick. There are so many extremely annoying things, that pointing out thinks barely illegal is annoying in itself, ha.
Seems to me the blue/white van wasn't going much faster. Surely you could have gotten a better example.
Also, I would think Stan's (camera) vehicle following at 1 second behind vehicle in front at 0:37 is more dangerous than going 5 over the speed limit.
That is not true as you state it. While different states have differing laws on this, I know a few that specifically address this issue, and exonerate a driver if a pedestrian is irresponsibly out in the roadway and accidentally gets hit. You should crack open a code book sometime and educate yourself on the law, instead of assuming. -The old claim of "Pedestrians have the right of way" is not an accurate statement, and is very misleading.
I can't believe the commenter is blaming the pedestrian for being stuck in the center divider. This is a state highway. If the STATE wasn't so cheap, they'd install countdown timers or AT LEAST walk/don't walk signs so pedestrians would know if they have enough time to cross. The state does nothing to protect pedestrians in this residential area.

"Right of way" = having the LEGAL right of passage over another. A pedestrian illegally jaywalking does NOT have "right of way" over a vehicle.

It is required by law to stop for a pedestrian if the pedestrian is in the crosswalk. : /

But there is a cross walk. She simply did not make it before her cross walk light ran out. its in the last 15 seconds of the video.

I understand, however, you stated that "with or without the crosswalk she still has right of way" -and that is not correct.
