This. Song took me through losing my fiancée suddenly to cancer - the 3am screaming and denials etc - now it comforts me. This is my new normal the world stopped spinning for me. I miss you Darling. One day, God willing, we will be united again. Until then my love
Hey guys, if you have a spare minute could you check out some of my covers on my channel and give some feedback. It sucks to have to advertise like this but it seems like the only way to get exposure. Thanks if you do check it out...
After listening to the utterly gorgeous, poignant and heart breaking original lyrics in French by the great Jacques Brel it is almost painful for me to listen to what McKuen did to this song!
i cant even get her to listen to these songs that would show her just how much i hurt, knowing in my heart she would have loved me as much as i loved her, but shes happy now.... happy, i sure wish i was
I agree with those saying it's interesting. It has sadness and love the drums that make it more mystical in a way...Why do we have to compare it to Brel's original? I don't think anyone could reach this anyway...
I quite like Cyndi Lauper, but she should have stayed away from this. It's a travesty of a very great song. The translation bears nmo resemblance to the original, and Lauper's voice doesn't reflect Brel's in the least. Perhaps it should be treated as something wholly different and thus to be judged in its own right. But it tries to echo the Brel version without any of his pain, so I fear it has to be seen in that light.
@Nefertiti7070 Hi, with all due respect, but at the end is a matter of taste. I appreciate both interpretations, but is kind of unfair to compare two voices which differences are abysmal. I have enjoy quite a lot of versions since the original in 1959.
@lasktguy .. I disagree. I think Madonna is a very good singer. and she made it not only because she puts on good shows, but because she was determined to make it. she's also a fashion icon and an awesome dancer. She is probably one of the most recognized names in the world.
@donpazer I agree Maonna is a singer. A perfectly good average singer. She made it big because of her putting on good shows, not because of her voice.
@lasktguy , No Madonna made it because she could write her own hits (words and music) and was lucky enough to meet the right people to give her a big break, learned to play instruments (guitar, drums), long before you even knew who she was, and yeah, she puts on hella good shows, probably some of the most extravagant in the biz. She's a dance and fashion genius and multi-talent.
She's an average singer, not a good singer. Compare her live performances to her records
@SpazChat I'll agree with a couple of things you say. Yes, she's an average singer and yes, she was lucky to meet people to give her a break. Multitalent?
@lasktguy , Multi-talent? ABSO-freakin-LUTELY. Madonna is an upstart. She can write music that sells off the charts, not just the words. She knows how to play the drums, some keyboards and she plays the guitar. She can sing well in the right environment. Acting is passable given the right direction. Did you see Evita and Desperately Seeking Susan? Swept Away was not bad either.. And she's a uber fantastic dancer and choreographer. She also runs many of her own businesses, diirects movies...
@lasktguy Perhaps upstart was not the appropriate term to express what I meant correctly; although she is definitely an upstart as well. I meant to say she's inventive in an entreprenurial and business artistic sense. I don't what one words defines that.
Madonna is not a singer and Madonna would probably be the first one to say she's not a singer. She's a great performer and a songwriter who just happens to sing and perform. Not that complicated a concept.
When performing her own indelible catalog, she's wonderful. But when taking on songs like this, she sounds ridiculous - like a novice in vocal class yearning to sing on Broadway. To prove my point, listen to EVITA. Actually, don't. No one should ever have to endure that again.
Well.. I'm a Madonna fan, and I must say that Cyndi did better on this. Madonna can't reach the correct notes, the song sounds a little mechanical with her voice. Cyndi and Emiliana Torrini, on the other hand, sing it properly with emotion, almost as beautifully as Maysa's version in French.
LOL. All the rabid, ignorant Madonna fans posting their little comments here cracks me up. Notice: Madonna's version remains unreleased. Cyndi's version was not only released, but appeared on a platinum album. An album that won a Grammy. *shrug* Not much more needs to be said.
@beatnickblanket I'm a Madonna fan and can understand why she never released it as it in no way merits one! Cindy sings this with so much more compassion and Madonna, unfortunately doesn't have that kind of emotion to do it justice. This is in my top five all time favourite songs ever. My fave version though is by Maysa Mataraso on a Pedro Almodóvar soundtrack. Madonna fans saying hers is much better really need to have a word with themselves. It's no where near as good as this!!!
@IPTBAGM and thats my opinion, sorry but there seems to many Madonna fans out there that 'big her up no matter what she does''. For me it's just not as good and I can see why she dropped it. I've ben a fan since the "Like a Virgin'' days and I just don't rate everything she does. Point out that emotion in her version and prove me wrong?
@helierguy I actually cried when i heard it. Madonna sounds like an angel in that song. She put so much emotion into it as if she was really hurting. I'm a very realistic Madonna fan. There are many other emotionless songs she has done, but not this one. She did a good job on it.
THis new arrangement song and with the voice of Cindy is awesome, I can't stop playing again and again, even when sounds sad, but where I can found this version

it's like she's slow a bit, compared to how it'd feel right. Really nice to hear it when her voice finally goes loud and cries out.
