  • Pick = Gritty, thumping sound

    Fingers = Smooth sound

There is no better. Your choice (I for one, plays bass with both).

  • @trouble1macker202 Or wants a sound that can't be obtained with fingers. Ive come straight to bass and i use both picks and fingers. For example, anyone who uses a pick for playing RATM or RHCP is missing out, but anyone who plays Green Day or Rancid with fingers just sounds awful. It doesnt matter how good you can play with fingers, for some styles you need a pick. Others you need fingers.

  • @trouble1macker202 i guess Paul McCartney is a failed guitarist, i think not...

  • @MrWill9877 Yeah, Paul used his thumb/fingers more often, but some songs he used a pick, and to me it sounds no different.

  • I typically don't do this, but uh...I'm gonna tell you that this video sucks.

  • Hey, playing w/pick is fine, but you should at least teach us somthing different.

  • Wow I like these vids ive already learned alot in just 1 hour than i did all together my 8 months of playing

  • @Holyhitman173 Don't use these videos again, the technique is terrible, everything you'll be learning is wrong

  • go bengals! XD

  • I don't get why everyone rips on expertvillage they just wanna help us, but we continue to act like assholes, grow up and be happy they even wanna spend there time helping us.

  • this video sucks, "heres how to hold a pick.... now that you're holding you're pick play a scale" -10 points

  • @lucas1wj yeah i agree he dosent really explain anything

  • pick vs fingers. wow anyone who does that dumbass arguement is #@!$ing retarted. i mean seriously argue about health care or something jesus

  • No real bass players play with & without pick

  • YOU'LL BE ABLE TO PLAY REALLY FAST.

is this guy serious? he fucked up that last line. lol

  • I hold my pick by clenching my ass cheeks togetha

  • hahahahahahaha

  • this guys technique is terrible I am sure hw works at mcdonalds

  • You're supposed to hold it between your first two fingers? I hold it with my toes :D

  • i play with a pick in a hard rock/metal band for a more punchy tone. there's no right or wrong way to play, it all depends on what sound you want.

  • Well i prefer fingers,smoother voice,but sometimes its hard to play with fingers..Like punk/metal songs so i play with pick..depends :D

  • I play with a pick only because I'm not good enough with my fingers yet to be of any use (I used to play guitar, so picking is easy for me). I'm working on the fingers though, and coming from someone who plays bass in a band with a pick - the pick BLOWS compared to the fingers. I can't WAIT until I'm good enough with my damn fingers!!!

  • i use both :D since my band is alternative/punkish type :D

  • isnt that do re mi fa so la ti do???

  • DOWNSTROKES!

  • Playing both finger as pick is the best route.

    Why limit yourself?

  • i use my index finger as a pick

and i m good with my finger

but i suck with my pick , i dunno

maybe i just think i m very bad cuz it doesnt sound as good

but if you re willing to sacrifice your index figernails , i would say use your finger as a pick

i know i sound like a noob , but arent we all?

  • It's all good, imo :)

you play what sounds good and works, imo. End of.

  • @nirvana324 Yea why limit yourself?? Why limit yourself on just two fingers when you can tremolo pick or other things with a pick? my opinion . . .

  • if you notice, picks give a more distant somewhat metal tone and fingers give a less loud more meaty tone. Most natural bassists prefer fingering mostly because you can do any style you want and change if you feel like it. Slap, pluck, double finger, whatever and play a ton of genre's. And also player preference comes into play.

  • what kind of songs are picks good for and not? cause i a beginner and need to know cause i play with a pick and play different types of rock.

  • could you also use your thumb as a pick and get the same sound as fingering?

  • Yes, and a beginner shouldn't be using a pick yet. You only use a pick for different sounds.

  • i play with pick m because i like the clear ,true sound !!check my vid on my channel!!

  • the not clear fake (plastic sound u mean) the tone the bass was made 4,u get by finguring

  • i think picks are for punk styles, but thats how i see it

  • guys who cares its a style of playing bass i play with both for different soundss it depends on how you wanna play

  • I play with a pick because I have more control over my strings that way.

  • no...if your a beginer i understand, but u have to learn fingerstyle down the road

  • he fucked up the scale the 2nd time and didnt use all 4 strings. Fucking newb

  • i can play that simple diatonic scale with my eyes closed twice as fast, and i would have to say im far from professional

  • dum

  • ok everyone using a pick is just another way of playing so stop bashing each other. jesus find something better to argue about atleast

  • agreed, but it is just dumb that someone puts down finger picking, you have to be either retarded or sarcastic to do that

  • Hell yeh all you 'finger' bassists are so shallow and cocky

  • ha ha well said! =)

  • my comment got hated on, i didnt insult people who use picks, i just stated the truth

furthermore, there is an appropriate time for any bassist to use picks because of the way it sounds, but everyone knows how to use a pick, bass playing wouldnt be the art that it is if no one used fingers

  • Well to be honest I hate playing with picks cuz I think it's a lot harder than using fingers.. That's probably because many people start with guitar and they keep using a pick. But I learned with fingers only and it's much easyer to controll ur strings.. Altough I'd like to learn playing with a pick for the better sound in certain songs.

  • Professional my ass. Everybody in Expert Village is mediocre.

  • Pick Bass Is The Only Way To Go!

  • r u kidding picks limit your genre you cant get a slap sound from a pick or get that warm tone is a wicked jazz song pick user are fo chumps

  • Right on! I play bass with a pick because I like the sound you get.
