  • That poor Asian girl is going to grow up so White Washed

  • Bijifjerij egerjfiejf i fiewj if JON HUNTSMAN jiefjirejifjreijf ijerifjiejfiwjdojksf iewf

  • This just shows how alien Huntsman's life is to most Americans.

  • @MinisterAilingTongue Why? Because he's educated and not a bumpkin moron like Perry or Cain?

  • @jerzy862 Many parents are the sole providers of their children's education. They don't have the time and money to train their children they way they might desire or dream. Huntsman is the son of a billionaire. Anything his father wanted to project onto his offspring he could manage with his obscenely deep pockets. Do I resent it? No. I simply don't want a billionaire's son "representing" me.

  • @MinisterAilingTongue You have a point. Being an intelligent, cultured individual is alien to most Americans.

  • @cerastes6 Sarcasm. Very original.

  • Putonghua...? So why is it called Mandarin in English?

  • @TheTranceCartel Mandarin is not necessary Putonghua, Putonghua is modern Mandarin with Beijing accent.

  • @TheTranceCartel Are you serious? Think about this simple question: when's the term Putonghua created by the Chinese government? Mandarin's been used for a long time. WAY BEFORE the Chinese Communist Party invented this term Putonghua.

  • @TheTranceCartel : As they'd say on that Facebook thing, "it's complicated".

The word "Mandarin" isn't Chinese at all. Some people say it comes from 滿的人 (prounounced man-de-ren -- a weird way of saying "Manchus" the rulers of China from 1644-1911), but the OED says that's rubbish, and the use of the word predates 1644 in any event. It's a Sanskrit derivative meaning a minister or counselor.

Mandarin acquired this name because it was the language spoken by officials.

  • @TheTranceCartel (continues). Mandarin Chinese is the local Beijing dialect. More or less. After 1911, the Nationalist government of China promoted this dialect as the One National Language. Thus it became known as 普通話 -- putonghua or "the common language".

    Im actually impressed by him.

  • It used to be illegal in China or Taiwan for non-Chinese to learn Chinese.
