@heyjude97 Its quite obvious Charlie abused him, and you may be right and I may be wrong, but I remember reading about an interview where he said something about Charlie raping him, I cant find it anymore, but like i said, i could be wrong. I don't see how he could have raped Bunny though if they were married.
You know, I don't usually subscribe to the "Thumbs up if you think..." rhetoric, but seriously. Thumbs up if you think that this song is proof positive that the best of Elliott Smith would have been yet to come.
I honestly didn't know he could sing this good. And I've got all his records.. Hah I'm almost getting a bit pissed here. Was there anything he couldn't pull off?
This is a beautiful song, even though the chorus melody is taken from John Lennon's War is Over, which to me almost makes it more beautiful, like an allusion in a literary masterpiece, Elliot's interpretation of this magic melody, in his own unique style is so powerful for me, especially considering his dad gave him the white album when he was young, which made him want to be a musician
@itsmichaelable his step-dad was charlie... charlie abused elliott as a child.that's why his nose looks like that. gary was the parent that actually got him into playing music... and saved him from charlie.
elliott was abused by his step father charlie. the flowers are for his stepfathers grave. the song is sang in the same melodie as war is over by John Lennon where the KIDS sing in chorus war is over. Elliott wants to give flowers for Charlies grave so that the war is finally over.
Elliott's stepfather was named Charlie, which who he had a difficult relationship with. Charlie is also mentioned in the lyrics of "Some Song" and "No confidence man".
"Charlie beat you up, week after week. When you grow up your gonna be a freak" -Some Song
Title is based on the book Flowers for Algernon, from which the main character was named Charlie. Though the song has no other references to the book as far as I know.
@diabloxscorchox he didnt get rid of it, it was supposed to be on From a Basement on a Hill but his family refused to release it along with several other songs after he died which sucks because it is amazing.
What's the line "Kiss me quickly, I'm in a hurry" supposed to mean or be in reference to? seems kind of out of place.
I like how the line sounds it's just...whenever I read into the meaning or what people think is the meaning of the song they never mention the line.

@Grungekiid I don't think he raped him, I think he just abused him. I think he raped Bunny, though.

This song is a retelling of The Story of Ferdinand, from the perspective of Ferdinand the Bull, which Elliott had a tattoo of on his upper arm.
AlexT643 1 year ago
@Mariah1461 It has nothing to do with flowers for algernon...... It's for his stepdad. Who sexually abused him when he was in his teenage years.

Nice try, but Charlie's not dead. I'd guess the flowers are just a metaphor for extending his forgiveness to Charlie.
