@camswitzer the reason why i don't wanna make a video of it is because i don't have a cam , but since you do why don't you show us? I mean you showed everyone about some basic stuff, why don't you show them the real hard one.

Good God, after watching loads of videos on YouTube about how to hold the things I finally got it thanks to you. Feels natural when I follow your instructions, thank you. :D
Great! I give you 5stars for your efforts, and for not giving up. Now remember, practice makes perfect! The more you use them, the more the muscles in your hands will get used to it, and the better you will become. LIGHT TOUCH is your goal.
I have been trying to eat with chopsticks for YEARS and it has never been explained to me properly. but shortly after watching this video I was able to eat my first meal with chopsticks! my life is all exciting now. THANK you!
Wow nice tutorial on how to use chopsticks I was really curious and decided to look up on how to do it...very well explained and well thought of..thanks
Thank you, sir. Please be sure to view my How to CHEAT Using Chopsticks as well. It gives a great idea for beginners out at restaurants who want to use them, but also want to eat and not die of starvation trying to get the food to the mouth.
Hey Cam, Very cool video. I've been using chopsticks for years (part of my ethnicity - I'm Asian). Another method, instead of 'stroking the kitten' (very cute metaphor, by the way), is to use the middle-finger to slide in and out between the two chopsticks. This opens and closes the two sticks like a pair of scissors or tweezers. I reckon it's a quicker way to do it, but yours works as well. (I tried the kitty-stroke thing and just couldn't do it. I guess I'm too used to my own method).
Thanks for the comment and if the serious people read these and note yours, I hope they give it a try because if it works for them, then that's fantastic! You don't use your chopsticks the "reverse" way, like some do, do you?
If by 'reverse', you mean I use the bottom stick to move, and keep the top stick still, then yes, I do. I've been doing it that way for over 10 years. I hold them like you do, but I use my middle-finger to slide in between the sticks. In - Open. out - Closed. And when I use chopsticks, my bottom stick moves, the top one pretty-much stays where it is.
I know you weren't insulting me. I'm just being a smartass. Better we both be smartass than just one of us. It makes it funnier, and more fun and breaks the ice. BTW, spearing food with ohashi is frowned upon, but sometimes you have to do it with the slimier stuff.
Cam is right. Spearing food with chopsticks is considered bad manners in Asian culture, much like stabbing stuff with your knife and sticking it in your mouth. Chopsticks are pincers, not skewers.
1) was that pork you were cooking that was still pink on the inside? Trichinosis do not die until 160F, it could be argued that leaving pork pink is unsanitory.
2) as far as chopstick ethics go, the example above for instance, how picky is the average japanese person on this subject?
I wonder this because MOST ethics are, to me, usually extremely redundant. If you were in a room with people that did not know about the taboo of passing food from chopstick to chopstick, there would be absolutely no offence taken.
This goes for most subjects, such as the western notion that it's impolite to rest your elbows on a table for instance.
You are damn funny! Amazing :)
Oh, and helpful too :)

I like to frequent a local Japanese chain restaurant that serves sushi, udon & miso soup where the servings come around usually on a track.
I asked them about using chopsticks for sushi, and they advised that it is not normally used for sushi; in Japan?
Are they trying to get out of teaching me how to use the sticks, or are the fingers used more often?

Some people use them, some don't. If you don't want your hands smelling like fish, use the ohashi.

Great! I give you 5stars for your efforts, and for not giving up. Now remember, practice makes perfect! The more you use them, the more the muscles in your hands will get used to it, and the better you will become. LIGHT TOUCH is your goal.

You don't use your chopsticks the "reverse" way, like some do, do you?
camswitzer 4 years ago
If by 'reverse', you mean I use the bottom stick to move, and keep the top stick still, then yes, I do. I've been doing it that way for over 10 years. I hold them like you do, but I use my middle-finger to slide in between the sticks. In - Open. out - Closed. And when I use chopsticks, my bottom stick moves, the top one pretty-much stays where it is.

Now how did I know that? Something told me that you did. Interesting.

Did this video help? I hope so. Remember the trick is the light touch. Good luck!

1 thing lol why go thruogh the hassle of having to pinch the meat when u can just stab it with a chopstick?
coolibe 4 years ago
That's like asking why use a spoon to scoop up ice cream when you can just spread it all over your face with your tongue?
camswitzer 4 years ago
i didnt get that lol, but anyways i wasnt insulting u i hope, u do have good skillz with chopsticks, wish i knew how to use em as well as u did
coolibe 4 years ago
I know you weren't insulting me. I'm just being a smartass. Better we both be smartass than just one of us. It makes it funnier, and more fun and breaks the ice. BTW, spearing food with ohashi is frowned upon, but sometimes you have to do it with the slimier stuff.
camswitzer 4 years ago
Cam is right. Spearing food with chopsticks is considered bad manners in Asian culture, much like stabbing stuff with your knife and sticking it in your mouth. Chopsticks are pincers, not skewers.

I have one question...how come you cover the cucumbers?
Meneks 4 years ago
I was wondering the same thing.
chub6tre8 4 years ago
I've got two questions:
1) was that pork you were cooking that was still pink on the inside? Trichinosis do not die until 160F, it could be argued that leaving pork pink is unsanitory.
2) as far as chopstick ethics go, the example above for instance, how picky is the average japanese person on this subject?
Nudz 4 years ago
sorry, 500 character limit.
