  • @stormihope Glad it helped, Dana. Thanks for viewing!

  • @camswitzer :D I just finished eatting spaghetti with chopsticks :3 My sister gave up though until I explained to her the way you did. She got it instantly.

  • @stormihope Excellent! I'm glad it worked. Have fun challenging yourself with eating green peas with them. Or better yet, eat a sunny side up (runny) egg!

  • plz tell me that i do have problem in holdingthe down stick so plz tell me in type written form how to hold the down stick plzzzzz

  • Excellent demonstration on how to use the chopsticks - appreciate it!

  • @camswizter are you ok the tsunami in japan ? i hope your ok

  • i like it !!

  • wow, 20 years in japan, look like u're an expert of using chopsticks cams, haha... nice video, it's kind of fun cooking using chopsticks ..

  • So the chopsticks do replace the forg and the knife?

Is there any typical Japanese food, you have to cut with chopsticks?

  • @Mig29Sawamura Tofu, hamburger meat, fried eggs, etc.

  • thanks lol finally some useful guide! :O

  • dude tell me about japan man i m excited to hear our storys about it

  • Kawazaki-kun - if you watch my 400+ videos you will learn a LOT about Japan. Enjoy and thanks for visiting.

  • thankyouu, that was very helpful. Are you American, you sound American and sort of Japanese...

I failed at using chopsticks until now. ><

  • Blondie - Thanks. I'm glad it helped. I'm Canadian.

  • can you pick up one piece of rice?

  • yes

  • still can't do it! :(

  • Keep up the good work!

  • @Shideh8 can you sow me please? can you make a video of it?

  • @theOminousMendoza eem? make a video of me failing at using chopsticks?! coz i said i still can't do it! lol

  • @Shideh8 I can do it, but i don't feel like making a video of it. i just like watching lol

  • Ominous - Thanks. I can too, but I don't feel like making a video of it, either. So now that we have that settled... moving right along.

  • @camswitzer the reason why i don't wanna make a video of it is because i don't have a cam , but since you do why don't you show us? I mean you showed everyone about some basic stuff, why don't you show them the real hard one.

  • Ominous - That would be making a video in vanity, just to show off a skill. And that doesn't interest me. The purpose of my videos is to share life and experiences with the world, hoping to expand the concept of Globalized Love (GL) in the Community and increase general happiness. Picking up one piece of rice doesn't accomplish that. I have another video that I need to process and upload but don't have time. Thanks. Let's move on, shall we?

  • @camswitzer isn't the same thing of what you are doing is showing off in the first place? I mean , you showed every one about some common basic stuff which most of people know, but you don't wanna show them tat you can do a hard one? I mean come on, be real you know the reason why you wanna show people that you know how to use chopstick is because you wanna look cool , and why do you get irritated when I talk about it? is it because you can't do it?

  • @theOminousMendoza LOL that's what I thought!

  • ugh! thank you sooo much! i have always had a hard time and my friends have also tried to help but it just didn't work. i was trying to practice with pens, but, well, that didn't exactly work, but anyways... THANK YOU!!!! i got the idea now :)

  • Glad to be of assistance!!

  • My pleasure!

  • Are you still trying? Are your fingers still tired, or have you built up endurance? Keep up the great work!

  • Your video is the first really useful source I could find online on how to hold ohashi! I tried while watching and I still have to practise A LOT but at least I really understood it now. Thanks a lot for making this video! :)

  • I'm really glad that it helped! Good luck, and build up those ohashi muscles, then enjoy doing more with ohashi than you can do with a fork.

  • nice one..

    thanks for sharing..

    keep up the good work..

    take care..

    God bless..

  • i was eating while watching this, i could manage using my way(they way i guessed they went) but i like this way alot better, i have more control, thanks!

  • Great! Keep up the great work, GG!

  • xD I put my middle finger through the middle of the chopstick then i let my finger out and it grabs what ever i need :D

  • I thank you, good sir. I recently started dating a woman whose family is from China and they eat using chopsticks. Your video helped me not to make a complete fool of myself. Again, than you!

  • You look like that John Corbett from My Big Fat Greek Wedding x]

    Thanks for the help!

  • Thank you!

  • I love Japanese and Chinese food but I can't eat with chopsticks. lol. Thanks for this!

  • thx for the lesson =D i'll be practicing with my (pencil) chopsticks >=3

  • Go for it!

  • Some people from my church went to Hong Kong to teach teenagers English as their second language. They brought back chopsticks and other cool things too. I have this all back chopsticks with gold dragons on the top of each one. and a case to store them in when not in use.

  • Awesome! Enjoy them, and never store them (i.e. use them always)

  • lol man...you are weak with those chopsticks...

i can use both hands at the same time and pick lemon seeds with them...

    practice makes perfect :D

  • I have so many chopsticks in my kitchen drawer! My hands shake to much, and its not working :-(

  • Keep trying!

  • I like to frequent a local Japanese chain restaurant that serves sushi, udon & miso soup where the servings come around usually on a track.

I asked them about using chopsticks for sushi, and they advised that it is not normally used for sushi; in Japan?

Are they trying to get out of teaching me how to use the sticks, or are the fingers used more often?

  • Some people use them, some don't. If you don't want your hands smelling like fish, use the ohashi.

  • it probably sucks way more for chopstick users to have arthtritis than and non chpstick user.

  • Now THAT is what I call thinking waaay outside the box! Thanks for that awesom comment!!

  • i didnt have chopsticks so i practiced with rockband drumsticks :S ty anyways lol

  • lolz, i used pencils x3

  • SKILLLZZZZZZZ! D:

  • why are you hiding cucumbers

  • Later use? (hehehe ^_^)

  • Eh wtf -_-

    I CANT EAT WITH THATXD

  • oh im hungry and that looks really good btw thnx

  • Tnx for video :D

  • Thanks! This really made it clear and simple. I'd just bought some sushi rolls at the grocery store and decided to google "eating with chopsticks" to see if I could finally figure it out. I ate along with the video--though I prefer veggies and seafood to pork and beef. ;-) For the first time in my life, after having given up on ever learning how to do it, I am eating with chopsticks!

  • Congratulations! I'm glad this silly little video was of help. Keep practicing and it will become second nature. I have been using ohashi (chopsticks in Japanese) for so many years that I prefer them to fork, knife, and spoon.

  • GIMME THAT PORK!!

  • i jus ordered dumplings cause you made me so hungry!!!! *)

  • hey give me that pork.......:O``````

  • hee hee hee....

  • using plastic chopsticks is hard but im getting there lol

    thanks for this helpful video

  • if you think THAT'S hard, try using the flat metal korean ones! They are killers!!!

  • oh yeah someone mentioned that to me after eating peoples fingers must hurt lol

  • ...then you just ssstroke ze kitty...

  • keety sssshtrokking izz goooood....

  • Haha it looked like you cheated in the end with the hand ;D, I didn't watch whole I ended there, incase u was going to say something after, however super nice video! thanks alot

  • Thanks. I do what I can.

  • Nice video! I think I can do it, I practice picking up ear picks and it works like a charm =D

  • great vid thanks

  • Thanks. And thanks for thumbs downing the naysayers. I don't know why people have the burning desire to come and attack or insult others. Funny, don't you think? Anywhoo... thanks a bazillion for watching.

  • I know I'm free, and that is why I chose to wear Shunsuke Nakamura's number 10. If you know world football, then you probably know him and how he was given MVP status in the European football last year. An amazing player!

  • y r u talking about politics here?

u can comment on chopsticks but not on politics. go and bother other ppl with ur politic crap.

  • And exactly how is that related to this guy talking about chopsticks and wearing a shirt? Don't judge a whole country based on a few of it's citizens.

  • AHHHHHHHH!!! im going NUTS!!! i am practicing with chopsticks right now and i cant do it!! i love eating japanese food and i manage to use the chopsticks but not in the right way... i've tried over the years to learn but i just CAN'T!!! :(

  • Sorry this didn't help you. Thanks for watching. Try the "How to Cheat Using Chopsticks" video. That might work.

  • thanks so much! i finally learned! =D

  • Your visit is much appreciated.

  • you make good quality videos that was worth watching thank you

  • Thank YOU!

  • whats wrong with cucumber??

P.S Your cooking makes me soo hungry rock on Cam!!! gooo baconn

  • Best friend doesn't like cucumbers, so I was hiding them... being mindful for my best friend. Thanks for your visit!!

  • Thanks bro now I can eat with chopsticks

  • Excellent! Keep up the great work!! And I am glad to be of service.

  • I set myself a challenge of eating sliced peaches with chopsticks they're REALLY slippery you know, the ones you get in a tin eith light syrup.

  • Now THAT is a real challenge!!!

  • When I learned to use chopstick, I started by picking up peas in a bowl, 1 pea at a time, eventual, i got the hang of it.

  • nice, that pork looked goood... though i'm jewish it still looked really good, also thnx for da video much more helpfull than little chopstick packages :<3)

  • Shhh... don't admit that you like pork or you might start getting all kinds of "hate spam"!!! Remember.. always "Deny everything, admit nothing."

    Here is a test:

    You love bacon, right?

And the "politically correct answer is?"

P.S. Thanks for the compliment on my food. I'm not Jewish (or First Nations) so I can admit that bacon is the food of gods, and pork is just about as good as a giant bloody hunk of beef!

  • wow thanks 5 stars!!!!

  • thx for all the help :)

  • heh:) nice video...

I tried to eat with them today..first time...and it wasn't difficult at all...

now I'm wondering... is that really so easy or it's easy for me just because i keep a tight friendship with a pencil? xD

  • whats with the cucmber ? and by the way tnx for the help ^_^

  • what was up with blocking the cucumber in the beginning with ur hand then the napkin?

  • at the end he also cover it with his hand O.o

    why?

  • So it worked? Great! How have you been eating cup raamen if you don't use chopsticks???

  • Thanks camswitzer for the tips they really helped me ;]

    Excellent video.

  • I'm glad it worked for you. It seems that my simple explanation has helped a few people. And I am glad that I can be of assistance.

  • Camswitzer Thank you very much!

I checked a lot of videos but basicaly I learned from your demonstartion!

    Greetings from Macedonia!

  • Glad to be of help! Spread the chopstick love in Macedonia! Make eating with chopsticks the new standard in Macedonia!

  • Its funny how can't you eat with chopsticks, I know how to use chopstick on the day I can walk. lol

  • Falkon - I know it seems strange to asians who grow up with them, but sincerely, if you have never used them, they are not easy to use at all! Thanks for your visit.

  • Perfect explination XD and the stroke the kitty thing is perfect. Things like that usually helps me remember things. Thanks for the upload.

  • My pleasure! I'm glad that it worked for you. I hope you enjoy eating natto with your ohashi now!

  • I'm finaly able to hold chopsticks correctly. Excellent video, thank you very much.

  • Glad it helped! Enjoy the rice.

  • thank you very much u made it really easy for me

  • I'm glad my explanation helped!

  • this video helped me alot

  • I am glad it did! Thank you for letting me know. I am happy to see the people comment who find that it has helped them work their ohashi better. They aren't easy to use to begin with... I just took the time to actually THINK about how I use them, and then let the world know. Again, thank you for visiting.

  • After four years of trying to learn how to use chopsticks, I finally learned how to do it after watching your video. I felt embarassed and humilated when I had to use a fork in Japan to eat gyoza and ramen. Now when I go back, I will be ready to use o-hashi. Thank you to the tenth power.

  • I am very happy I was able to help. Do not feel bad at all because ohashi are so different to use from knives and forks. It is not an easy feat to achieve proficiently by any means. I am very glad that I was able to help you get over that hump in your study to use the ohashi. Congratulations! Now go and see if you can repeatedly pick up one piece of rice at a time. That is your next mission, should you choose to accept it!

  • Thank you SO much, brother. I just bought 2 pairs of 'sticks at the mall and I am having trouble eating fruit salad with them :P

Once I watch the video fully I hope to be able to eat with them.

    Best regards from Canada :)

  • I hope it works for you. Remember not to "clamp down" on the ohashi or you won't have freedom of movement which is what is required. And don't forget the light touch. "Stroking the kitty" gets the job done.

Regards from a Displaced Canuck in Japan.

  • NOW I AM HUNGARY!!!!!!

  • I have one question...how come you cover the cucumbers?

  • Back when I first did this, one of my best friends would get nauseous when she saw cucumbers. It is a hangup she used to have and associated them with slimy, disgusting not fit for human consumption feelings. But she pushed past that now and is able to eat them, I think. I'll see for sure when I visit her in a few weeks. Thanks for visiting!

  • Thanks! this really helped me alot.

  • Great! Finnaly i can eat with chopsticks! best wishes from norway :)

  • Glad it worked. Keep stroking them!

  • yay i can finally use my chopsticks ;P but...when u keep saying "stroking it" it sounds like porn...lol

  • Get your brain out of the gutter!

(I try to attract all manner of market segments... and hey! Sex sells!!)

Thanks for the visit and keep on stroking those sticks!

  • Thank you thank you thank you ill never!again eat with a spoon or fork again!

  • Really? I must admit it IS a little difficult eating yogurt with ohashi...

  • Good God, after watching loads of videos on YouTube about how to hold the things I finally got it thanks to you. Feels natural when I follow your instructions, thank you. :D

  • Thank you very much for visiting and watching. I appreciate it very much.

  • Cool! I finally do it! yay! 5 stars

  • Great! I give you 5stars for your efforts, and for not giving up. Now remember, practice makes perfect! The more you use them, the more the muscles in your hands will get used to it, and the better you will become. LIGHT TOUCH is your goal.

  • Lol you're funny xD i like it @!

  • Don't forget to watch the next one: "How to Cheat Using Chopsticks!"

    Thanks for the visit!

  • I can´t find it between all of the 276 vids xD!

  • It's the one right after How To Eat.

I can't put the link in here, but if you go to my orange page, and type in "how to cheat using chopsticks" it comes up.

  • I have been trying to eat with chopsticks for YEARS and it has never been explained to me properly. but shortly after watching this video I was able to eat my first meal with chopsticks! my life is all exciting now. THANK you!

  • It is comments like yours that make all the other reject and abusive comments melt away into nothing! THANK YOU! I love you!

  • this was great....i m now a chop stick warrior...guahahahah!!!

  • Congratulations! (I type this from a Tokyo hotel. Just chance I popped in here 19 minutes after you watched.) Thanks for watching.

  • why is a white guy teaching "ancient chinese secreeetttssss"!..lol

  • because... zer are shpaiz evryvere!

  • yo can u posted more video about "how to use chopsticks" thx yo....!!!!

  • What? Isn't two enough? How to eat, and how to cheat just about covers everything!

  • Wow nice tutorial on how to use chopsticks I was really curious and decided to look up on how to do it...very well explained and well thought of..thanks

  • Thank you, sir. Please be sure to view my How to CHEAT Using Chopsticks as well. It gives a great idea for beginners out at restaurants who want to use them, but also want to eat and not die of starvation trying to get the food to the mouth.

  • Hey Cam, Very cool video. I've been using chopsticks for years (part of my ethnicity - I'm Asian). Another method, instead of 'stroking the kitten' (very cute metaphor, by the way), is to use the middle-finger to slide in and out between the two chopsticks. This opens and closes the two sticks like a pair of scissors or tweezers. I reckon it's a quicker way to do it, but yours works as well. (I tried the kitty-stroke thing and just couldn't do it. I guess I'm too used to my own method).

  • Thanks for the comment and if the serious people read these and note yours, I hope they give it a try because if it works for them, then that's fantastic! You don't use your chopsticks the "reverse" way, like some do, do you?

  • If by 'reverse', you mean I use the bottom stick to move, and keep the top stick still, then yes, I do. I've been doing it that way for over 10 years. I hold them like you do, but I use my middle-finger to slide in between the sticks. In - Open. out - Closed. And when I use chopsticks, my bottom stick moves, the top one pretty-much stays where it is.

  • Now how did I know that? Something told me that you did. Interesting.

  • good vid I have never learned how to use chopstickes

  • Did this video help? I hope so. Remember the trick is the light touch. Good luck!

  • 1 thing lol why go thruogh the hassle of having to pinch the meat when u can just stab it with a chopstick?

  • That's like asking why use a spoon to scoop up ice cream when you can just spread it all over your face with your tongue?

  • i didnt get that lol, but anyways i wasnt insulting u i hope, u do have good skillz with chopsticks, wish i knew how to use em as well as u did

  • I know you weren't insulting me. I'm just being a smartass. Better we both be smartass than just one of us. It makes it funnier, and more fun and breaks the ice. BTW, spearing food with ohashi is frowned upon, but sometimes you have to do it with the slimier stuff.

  • Cam is right. Spearing food with chopsticks is considered bad manners in Asian culture, much like stabbing stuff with your knife and sticking it in your mouth. Chopsticks are pincers, not skewers.

  • I have one question...how come you cover the cucumbers?

  • I was wondering the same thing.

  • I've got two questions:

    1) was that pork you were cooking that was still pink on the inside? Trichinosis do not die until 160F, it could be argued that leaving pork pink is unsanitory.

    2) as far as chopstick ethics go, the example above for instance, how picky is the average japanese person on this subject?

  • sorry, 500 character limit.

I wonder this because MOST ethics are, to me, usually extremely redundant. If you were in a room with people that did not know about the taboo of passing food from chopstick to chopstick, there would be absolutely no offence taken.

This goes for most subjects, such as the western notion that it's impolite to rest your elbows on a table for instance.
