I was speaking to my Grandad (Jimmy's Uncle) just last weekend about the circumstances of him finding Jimmy dead, and he categorically stated that there was no way it was suicide. He is aware that the circumstances would lead to a lot of hypothesis and assumptions, but he was adamant that it was no way suicide. He went to wake Jimmy to get ready to go to his mother's funeral and couldn't wake him, so I think he's in a pretty good position to have an informed opinion on it. RIP Jimmy x
It's not known if it was actual suicide though, some of his closest friends say he was too much of a coward to commit suicide. He died on the day of his mother's funeral. His uncle found him in the house and wouldn't wake up, so he got sent to hospital and died just before his mother's funeral started. The people got told as they were going into the church. It could of been suicide though, his girlfriend got killed in a car crash and all he had left was his mother. Who knows.
like Tony hancock i think his show worked better on radio ?, unique in its day - i read that it was an accidental overdose of sleeping tablets that killed him?.....I know that the singer Morrissey is a massiv e fan !....
classic comedy, still follow this stuff on bbc 7,timeless and good old fasioned fun for all the family,,much of todays comedy is just smut and it is so boring,,,
I can't help wondering, considering Jimmy never physically grew beyond the age of 8...how come he died? It seems kinda stupid to say so, but if people die from old age...
i used to run home from church every sunday dinner time and wait for the valve radio to warm up so i could listen to the jimmy clitheroe show . pure magic.
@bigrider2806 I'm younger than you, but I remember every Monday night, waiting for Clitheroe on the radio, I think out of every memory I have, the intro music to Clitheroe stirs me most.
my late granma told us he stayed at there boarding house in morecambe in the 50,s and early 60,s and was always playing jokes shame i was to young to know what times they must have been no TV just the RADIO and THEATRE to entertain luckly i do remember some. How times have changed.
Oh happy days! this brings back such wonderful memories. There realy should be more of the Kid available. I remember both the radio and TV programs. Humya Pete was his teacher if my memory serves me right?
My parents took me to see Jimmy Clitheroe at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, must have been about 1959.. after the show we went to the bar and Jimmy was sitting at the bar having a post show drink..He chatted to my Parents for ages. I got bored and wanted to go home..
Good to see a genuinely young Jimmy Clitheroe - but also interesting to see and hear Frank Randall, a direct antecedent of Radio 4's Count Arthur Strong
In response to JemMackie, Molly Sugden played Jimmy's mother ONLY on TV. His radio "mother" was Patricia Burke (although for the earliest shows it was Renee Houston).
Alfie Hall played by Danny Ross was Jimmy's sister Susan's boyfriend, not cousin.
I stand corrected as you are right on both counts. The mists of time make you forget these things. I used to listen to his radio show when I was a lad and occasionally they did repeats on NZ radio but not for a long time. Halcyon days.
Jimmy Clitheroe was on the radio and tv when I was a lad. His mother in both was Molly Sugden. He had a cousin in the program who stuttered I believe it was Danny Ross.
His radio program ran for three hundred episodes, in the days of good humoured comedy, no swearing, no putting anyone down. In real life he only grew to 4 foot 3 inches and lived with his mother all his life. When she died he took an overdose of sleeping tablets the day of her funeral.
I saw Jimmy Clitheroe in panto. Jack and the beanstalk at the Palace Theatre in Manchester about 1968 I think. Also starring was Anita Harris and the Batchelors. Thanks for the clip.
Thanks for the download of Jimmy Clitheroe. I used to listen to him every Saturday with my Dad when I was a child - happy memories. Pity they don't repeat his programmes on the TV and radio these days.
They did for a while last year, playing the radio series on BBC7, but they stopped just after christmas, god only knows why. Being only 16, its a good enough laugh for everyone. That and "just a minute"

Jimmy Clitheroe certainly was a lot older when he made this film.
In fact he would have been 27+ years old as he as born on Christmas Eve 1921.
