You download the DVD or LiveCD and burn it onto a disc. Then you just go about it like installing any other operating system really. If you don't have an optical drive you can generally use a bootable USB. It didn't work on my computer, not even when I tried doing it in conjunction with MagicDisc. I think there is a good wiki article on it though.
I wish so much I could get my Mandriva or OpenSUSE to work. I don't have a disk drive on my computer so I tried to mess with BIOS and all this stuff lol. I ended up having to reimage it and I haven't collected the guts to kill a school distributed laptop again.
i recently just got pissed off at my copy of windows which was reinstalled (again) due to a lot of driver issues... so i'm thinking of switching to linux.. is it user-friendly? i'm only going to use my computer for working mainly on spreadsheets and im a moderate gamer not requiring a very powerful graphics card.
Yes it ist very user-friendly when realize that Linux is not Windows! First it would be strange and new...but suddenly - perhaps after 1 or 2 month - you understand what your computer is really doing and how it works.
To play actual/new games leave Windows on a free partition...(You can run nearly every game on Linux too but you have to learn something. Some games are working fine...other are complicatet to run.)
Hi I'm thinking of coming over to the Linux side and I Was wondering, would this distro be one you would recommend? I only know the main ones like Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Kubuntu. Just curious if this one is pretty easy as well.
I can recommend you a number of distros. Ubuntu would not be one of them though. Ubuntu is over-rated. I never tried mandriva (unfortunately), so I can't comment on it, but I have heard good things about it.
It's difficult to recommend a special Distro. There are lot of Distributions you can try for free! Mandriva-Linux is good for Newbies...
Tip: Don't try KDE4 (K-Desktop-Environment v.4). It's pretty new and buggy. Try KDE3 or Gnome. But perhaps it's good for Newbies who don't know the "old" KDE because I'm using KDE since lot of years and and have some partiality with v4...it's very different to v3.
This is the best rapid fire Linux demo that I've seen so far. It shows that Linux is so much more than merely wobbly windows and cubed desktop switchers -- although I like a little icing on my cake, too.
You can get an Ubuntu CD (a good flavour of Linux for beginners and advanced alike) sent to you for. Yeah, that's right. For _free_.
Just go to the Ubuntu homepage, select "Get Ubuntu" and click "Request free CDs". You have to register first though, but it's an awesome way of getting Linux if you don't know how to burn ISO images yourself.
i have a kid in my computers class who everytime a new windows release comes out he has to tell me how good it is. glad to see linuxi s gonna shred windows apart.
...sadly the game manufacturer don't program for OpenGL too because it's not lucrative(financial). That's the only reason. There are solutions like wine etc. but it's nothing for normal users this time...
Vista wouldn't be nearly as bad if it didn't have the Aero them. It's pretty but it degrades performance to a ridiculous degree. XP has a sleek, simple design so it has decent performance even though it's Windows.
The Windows 7 theme is almost identical to Aero, except now minimized windows look just like shortcuts in the Quick Start menu so you can't tell wtf you're doing...
In my book, if you buy something it should work. You shouldn't have to wait for the remote to ship if you buy a TV, without a remote it's an incomplete set.
Windows might be the best operating system for you, but I don't like Windows' attitude; shipping faulty products, being underhanded in business and using a lot of money to eliminate Linux. Not only do I dislike Windows but I love Linux for other reasons, but in the end the best operating system for you is the one you feel most at home with.
About freakin time someone did a MEANINGFUL demonstration of Linux...unlike some of the others on here who are like moths to a fire showing off 5 useless minutes of the damn wobbly window effects. Thank you for a breath of fresh air.

how did you open flash?
i'm having some annoying bugs with wine, ubuntu and flash CS3
can you tell me which config or translation layer app are you using to make flash run so perfectly?
metmou 2 years ago
@metmou
CrossOver by Codeweavers (cxlinux)...based on wine.
Sadly there is no free version available this time.
phtcsscthp 2 years ago
just download the latest version of adobe flash player for free and you'll be able to do it.
scarthman 2 years ago
there is flashpalyer for linux if you are not talking about the flash pro (editor) that might work under wine (consult their databases).

Dude, I have a WinTV HVR-950Q, but I'm trying to find drivers: WINE doesn't operate to install the drivers for the OpenSUSE OS.
OS: OpenSUSE 11.1 64 bit KDE 4.1.3.
WinVistaUser2 2 years ago
@WinVistaUser2
Installing windows drivers with wine is bullshit!
Most WinTV-cards working out of the box...
open a tv program and try. Otherwise ask/search in a Suse forum or better use google. You would find a answer!
phtcsscthp 2 years ago
one more question: how did you stream tv to kaffeine?
was that something that was done with your at home cable or satellite connection?
poisenbery 2 years ago
@poisenbery
DVB-T (USB-Reciever) working out of the box. Plug in, search for channels...and watch tv.
Works fine with xine. Kaffeine is only a "gui" for xine and works with cable and satellite too.
Drivers if needed: linuxtvDOTorg

Windows = High compatibility, fair ease of use depending on system
Linux = Choice, freedom, stability, community based
Mac = Best editing programs, and although I've never used one, I've been told it's even easier to use than Windows
