GREATEST EVER TO PUT ON SKATES. My favorite figure skater of all time and BY FAR the most talented. She got shafted in Calgary and again in 1990, but it is so glad to see people still giving her the praise she deserves. And yes, the skaters today are so blah I rarely ever watch figure skating anymore. Thank goodness for YouTube!
Some skaters have Olympic gold medals and some skaters are legends. Midori's triple axel is better than most of today's male skaters--maybe the best, period. And she did a triple-triple, too!
Wow, it almost looks like she could have done a quad axle! I remember at the worlds in 89, she actually over rotated the triple axle, which is mind-boggling.
With the height she gets in every type of triple jumps and knowing how good and consistent she was with her 3T-3T,she could have landed 4T-3T fairly easily in competitions had she and her coach invested some time for it. It's really a shame that didn't happen...
@AWfan52525 I read that she tried a quad a few years before this and broke her ankle, and didn't want to risk it again. Let's face it, at the time she was SO ahead of her league anyway that a quad was totally unnecessary. No other woman at the time could even do all five triples, let alone all six.
Are you kidding? Lysacek couldn't hold a candle to those jumps. A lot of people can't. Most Skaters can't. She's a wonderful jumper, but she lacks a little artistically. She's really a joy to watch preform.
@arsoys Many great moments, but actually Worlds 89 and 90 were better: Here, she tripped and nearly fell after her triple flip, and then she singled the triple loop. But still, phenomenal!
@iceroby72 her toe and flip may have been flawed, but there is nothing wrong with her lutz, she always takes off from a BO edge, you'd have to be blind to miss it.
@iceroby72 it's not about what you "think" it's an absolute fact. Her lutz takes off of an outside edge. I don't even think you know what a flutz is...
it's amazing ... a few cross cuts and she gets SO MUCH speed and that height of the lutz ... she had to delay the revolution to not over rotate!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
@thomstephens Aside from her jumps, she skates like a novice without any grace at all.

what a height, 3A!!!

I haven't seen a single skater EVER get the height she does on jumps. You'd think by now someone would have matched her, but no!

Wasn't this the first triple axel in international competition by a woman?

even lysacek couldn't jump like her.

@2thinkitive Indeed she is, all skaters suck now. Yuna kim is rubbish.

she was so cute, jumping and waving to the crowd... Adorable!!! Such power in such a cute package!

That is just an amazing triple axel. 5.8 here, at that time, for technical was ludicrous.

This is, I think, the very best performance by the very greatest female skater.
Worlds 89 LP and NHK 90 LP are very close, but this is it!

The most perfect and beautiful triple axel ever!
Just incredible how high she gets!

Oh My Gawd. Her triples look effortless! Whoa. Yup, I do believe I would kill a thousand people for those jumps!!! Arghh!
Midori Ito, you are amazing. =D
smartisdana 3 years ago 4
Men's skaters today - notably Lambiel - would surely kill to get that 3A. hahaha

This is the reason why I never find Mao Asada's 3Axel amazing. (But I respect her challnege) Midori's 3Axel here is unbelievable...Meissner's? Hmmm?
ryotatateishi 4 years ago 3
Meissner's is not even as good as Asada's.
muffycat26 4 years ago 4
Right... Meissner's 3-3 is very doubtful(toe-axel), but her 3A attempt is even more worse. Although I like her skating attitude...
ryotatateishi 4 years ago 3
And don't forget that Meissner often flutzes and lipes the right toe jumps
iceroby72 2 years ago
@iceroby72 Meissner has NEVER flutzed in her life.

@kwadruple If you say so .... I don't agree ... Her toe jump were technically wrong! Not only th flip and tha toe loop but the lutz too ...

@kwadruple Call me blind if you like but I still thinke her toe jumps were, well are, all wrong.

@iceroby72 yes, i don't like it when people spread misinformation.
kwadruple 1 year ago
@kwadruple ... Good for you ... nevertheless she flutses ...

We need more upper body development in todays Ladies. Midori and Tonya had killer shoulders and biceps for that extra lift and rotation.

my god ... her triple axel ... i mean, when i see mao asada, i think she might sometimes 2 foot it .. this one .... AIR !!!
