  • we need to go back to 2d. the 3d thing is cool. but it takes alot of true skill to do this.

  • i couldnt see shit

  • ...How many pages did he use..? O.O

  • I just wish there were more 2D animations then there are these days....they need to come back sometime...

  • All that just for a few seconds worth wow :O

  • aww, the old man didn't make it :( but i loved watching the process of it being created, the scene.

  • LONG LIVE GLEN KEANE AND ANDREAS DEJA!!!

  • @oopaulorafael They already have a guarenteed foreverafter, it's in thier movies. Unless EVERY Disney movie on this earth is destroyed (which it wont be cuz that dog-on Disney vault everyone hates), Glen, Andreas, Eric, and all the other amazing Disney animators will always live on!

  • @ytfjordan Indeed! There are other great animators I didn't mentioned, such as James Baxter (Belle, Quasimodo), Mark Henn (Jasmine, Young Simba, Tiana), Mike Surrey, Kathy Zielinski (Frollo, Jafar as Beggar/Snake, Ursula) and many others.

    Btw, Tangled is artistically Outstanding!

Nice songs (I See The Light)

    Nice Score by Alan Menken!

    Incredible animation!

    Beautiful backgrounds!

And Glen Keane is Executive Producer! ;)

  • @oopaulorafael I'm surprised you mentioned Tangled. I havent seen it yet. I wont be able to sadly.... So I will just have to get it on dvd. I also appreciate your thoughts on the movie bc I want to be ensured that it IS a good movie. I dont wanna buy a dvd, esp. Disney, and find out that the movie sucks (like the haunted mansion or home on the range *shivers*)!! <--I heard terrible thins about those two, never bought them. But since then Disney has been redeeming themselves. Anyway, thanks!

  • @ytfjordan (Just saying, for people to know):

    Alan Menken is an Oscar-winner Score composer (for other Disney films);

    Glen Keane is a legendary animator (Ariel, Beast, Aladdin, Tarzan);

The duet ''I See The Light'' was nominated for Best Original Song in the Golden Globe Awards.

  • @ytfjordan

Don't be worried, Tangled is a great movie. Worth watching it in the cinemas.

This film holds an overall approval rating of 93%, based on a sample of 28 reviews. (source: Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics).

Quentin Tarantino named Tangled as one of his top five favorite films of 2010.

  • LONG LIVE GLEN KEANE AND ANDREAS DEJA!!!

  • thanks Glen...watching you work that drawing was magic to someone who knows nothing of the working process....amazing!

  • incredible

  • What was he saying about anticipation?

  • say you want to move the character forward, and you move him back first, thats anticipation

  • My IDOL!!!! GOD BLESS YOU GLEN....FOREVER!!!

  • Awesome! This guy is great.

  • sweet jesus, he's a genius

as an animation student im inspired and intimidated lol

  • I completely agree! I wanna go draw and animate something now, but being a new animation student I know I'll disappoint myself :-/

  • 'Pencil mileage' was a term we used at CCAD - you have to work through the bad drawings to reach the good ones, and it takes time.Just keep drawing. I'd spend a day at the zoo and maybe get 5 or 6 sketches that really stood out. It's great to see these vids on here. Glen is among the very best of our time.

  • he's a genius!!!

  • he is absolutely amazing

  • The magic of it was how people almost forgot that it was merely a sketchy series of pencil drawings and saw it as an old person trying to get out of his chair. Genius with evoking emotion.

  • You are absolutely right. It's amazing how we all really, REALLY felt for this guy.

Glen Keane is one of the greatest. Thank you so much for this post, as both an animation student and a human being.

  • awesome!

  • man, i wish i could be trained by a guy like glen keane... i think hes the one of the greatest animators alive, and i also think he can be considered the new "dysney's old man". :^D

  • Thanks for posting this. Animation like this is priceless, and it's so sad to see computer animation dominating the box office. How will we ever continue the tradition of Disney's Golden age?

  • Well, I predict that 'The Princess and the Frog' is going to be hugely successful, particularly due to the fact that audiences haven't seen a new traditionally animated feature film in ages.

  • Spirited Away wasn't all that long ago was it?

  • True, traditional animation is still the norm in Japan, but in terms of the Western market, we've been deprived.

  • Why is it sad to see computer animation dominating the box office? You mean its sad to see those crappy films made using computer animation dominating the box office. A good story is a good story whether its told through a book, a feature film, a 2d animation or a 3d animation, its just a medium. A computer is just a pencil with a few extra features. I agree that the type of technique seen above should be carried on, but its not the medium that counts it's how you use it

  • I agree with you about the importance of a good story regardless of the medium. Yeah, everyone wants to hear/see a good story. But fantasically animated movies like all those from Disney's Golden age (1933-1966) are still heads above those being done by Pixar today. I've never watched a Pixar movie more than once - whereas I can't get enough of the Disney classics. They're masterpieces. My opinion of course, but I'd guess most animation students would agree with me.

  • Yeah, and don't forget Studio Ghibli, in my opinion the greatest hand drawn films ever come from Studio Ghibli. Peace.

  • tomasino747 makes a good point: the quality of a film has nothing to do with its medium, and the techniques of traditional animation are being carried ever-more into the computer-generated style as it becomes more familiar. I love the hand-drawn style, but I admit that it has limitations, and computers have been used to enhance 2D animation for a very long time.

  • Comment removed

  • Computer is a tool, it makes the job easy. Do you have any idea how a traditional animation is done? Computers made life easy for animators.

  • I understand what you're saying. But part of the human element of hand-drawn animation is lost in computer animation. Why do you think Van Gogh paintings are worth so much? A digital representation of his paintings (no matter how insane the resolution and detail)will never compare to the real thing. Get my drift?

  • kinda, but your analogy doesn't work..a 3d film isn't a 'digital representation' of something already existing - it's an entity and a story in its own right. And the whole point is to use a medium to its own strengths, ie 2d doesn't have the power 3d does when it comes to camera movement and lighting an animation, but is more effective in other areas.

It's best to accept and judge things on their own terms...this is just like the whole 'book vs film' debate...

  • well said

  • great stuff!- though im sure itd be quite a challenge to clean up!

-Check out FAVELADOS, the latest grad film from the AIB-

  • Poor old guy... XD

  • Thanks for this post. It is a very rare chance to see animation in progress. Very informative.

  • poor old man, lol

  • ha, ha, lol - that man just couldn't get out of his chair!XD
