Mario was probably the best natural goal scorer ever.....size, strength, hands, combined with Gretzky-like instincts....not to mention the adversity he faced throughout his career....class act.
Both Lemieux and Gretzky were great players. That being said;1)goalie pads from 79'-84' were smaller and it was a lot easier to score goals in early 80's,the NHL stats prove it. 2)Lemieux never had 6-8 hall of famers helping him 3) Lemieux played less due to health problems. One can come to their own conclusion after these facts but after everything is said and done, they are the 2 best players the game has ever seen!
@kodiak1966 Lemieux never had 6-8 hall of famers helping him...
Well let's count : Coffey, Francis, Mullen, Murphy, Trottier, and I think it's fair to add Jagr and Recchi when they'll retire. So I get 7 HoFamers, I think you failed on this one.
Goalie pads from 79'-84' were smaller...
Are you saying they suddenly got big in 85? Gretzky still scored 208 pts that year, and 215 the next one.
Gretzky had 6-8 Hall of Famers helping him offensively? I count Messier, Coffey, Anderson and Kurri. That's 4. Let's look at Lemieux. He had Coffey, Jagr, Recchi, Francis. The exact same.
@frontrankdatsun Recchi and Francis were good, but very average players; Coffey and jagr came years after so NO,not the exact same at all.You forgot the other great oilers,ie McTavish,Smyth,Furh,Moog, etc etc etc.Had Lemieux played with an elite team like the Oilers backing him up and had he stayed healthy(no bad back and cancer)..no contest.he'd own the record books.
I believe a healthy Lemieux would have broken most of Gretzky's goal and point records, except 50 in 39... but Gretzky's 1963 career assists and 163 assists in a season record would have likely stood regardless. The one time Lemieux came close to playing a full season, he had 85 goals and 199 pts, both quite close to Gretzky's records, but his 114 assists were still far 163. Lemieux might be king of goal scoring but Gretzky was king in assists.
@gymguy25 Yea...king of assists because he fed Kurri all those years. Mario played alone for years until Jagr showed up and even then, they only played together on power plays.Mario was the best player the NHL has ever seen and I was lucky to see him play his whole career.A healthy Mario with an elite team like the early 80's Oilers backing him up...would have shattered ALL records.
@kodiak1966 Who was better, Jaromir Jagr or Bernie Nicholls? Reason I ask is cus Gretzky once "made" Nicholls score 150 pts (one of only 5 players in NHL history to due that, the other 4 are Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman and Esposito), and Lemieux once "made" Jagr score 149. Bottom line, Jagr won several scoring titles on his own, Nicholls was barely 80 pt a year player without Gretzky. Also, Lemieux played alone until Jagr? Ever heard of some guy named Paul Coffey?
@gymguy25 Coffey only joined the Pens in 1988 and Jagr in 1990. Coffey was on the blue line helping his goalie and did very little to help Lemieux.Coffey is one of the best defenceman that ever played tho. There is no arguing that Gretzky was the best assist guy/passer ever......Adam Oates was also very good to brett Hull in the day.
@kodiak1966 Paul Coffey did little to help Lemieux? Do you realize Gretzky had his last truly dominant season the last season he played with Coffey? (183 pts to the 2nd scorer's 108) and Lemieux won his first scoring title the first year he played with Coffey? This was no coincidence as he was one of the greatest skaters and puck rushing defensemen of all time. There's no such thing as a one man team, Lemieux was as close as you'll ever get to that but he needed help like everyone else.
Ovechkin is having a downfall and he is becoming a boring player. Crosby is also boring and a crybaby. Crosby does his goals almost always on the same place in the same way. Dunno why everybody likes him?...
Real superstars are gone forever. Those guys you listed are just good... but good isn't enough for dominating.
@apxeli Crosby's point streak earlier this year wasn't dominating? Jesus... send me whatever you're smoking, because it must be amazing for you to think that. Since when is 2 points per game not domination?..
well, i don't understand why they don't find a way to block Crosby because SHE'S putting the puck to the goal almost every time on the same spot. Somehow with Alex they know how to defend. Crosby have his own office like Gretzky had in his own time. It still doesn't make Crosby a superstar, because Gretzky had more skills in every way. 2 points per a game streak is still not analog for a 2 points per game for a career.
@apxeli If you know anything about Gretzky, or hockey... as a matter of fact, you'd know Gretzky wasn't defined by his skills, which he was actually lacking in. So by your definition of a superstar, even Gretzky isn't one. Jesus why do people talk about things that know nothing about..?
@apxeli you obviously don't realize, and you would if you were to watch ANY documentary on Wayne Gretzky, because the first thing said, most likely is that Wayne wasn't the fastest, strongest, nor did he have the strongest shot, but what made him great was his vision. That, you can take that to the bank, sir
Document is the directors or script writers vision, not Gretzky's vision. You seem to have problems understanding that. I believe that adding up the best skills will not make the best player. You just have to be good enough in every level - whatever the skill x might be - before you can raise above others. In my eyes Gretzky had one or two weaknesses, but they are insignificant when you are looking him as a whole player.
@apxeli HAH. You're funny. Go read a book about Gretzky, than come back and talk to me. You're wasting my time because you're about as educated on the matter as a brick wall.
those were the days....before all this bullshit about pens fans being bandwagoners and making the people who actually remember this game as I did feel like lesser fans.
And yea, I do think Mario had a lot harder time putting up numbers than Crosby or Wayne did. Both had a lot better health, more rules support, and most importantly, the team around him. As a Pens fan, even I think Crosby's spoiled. Lemieux had NOBODY in his prime, up until Paul Coffey came and ownership began spending more.
@redoctober90 i dont understand how people say crosby is spoiled!!! im not his biggest fan but spoiled?? is he given assists when he does not earn them? or given shifts that he doesn't deserve? are the 1st star awards reserved for him? do goalies let him score?? he is involved with nhl advertising because today you have to advertise!! a la nfl

@kellyspub23 no doubt today's era i s unmatchable in talent the 90s and 80s are a laughable joke compared to the fast paced concussion filled post lockout era
@redoctober90 one more thing. when was mario's prime? coffey was brought in for lemieux 4th season... mario's numbers were best during and after this season
Ovechkin has nothing on Lemieux, heck atleast Lemieux fought when he had to and never gave a cheap shot to fellow hockey players. But factor in Lemieuxs playmaking 100 assist ability, this is not contest at all, Lemieux ass rapes Ovechkin at every facet of hockey save for cheap shotting people and knee on kneeing them of course.

@pbcj55 Definately. Less than a 915 games and scored 690 goals. That's 500 games less than Gretzky :) 200 goals in 500 games, with Lemieux' scoring prowess would've been easy.
Oh trust me I know Mario Lemieux is the best hockey player ever! Nobody can touch him. Kids today are amazed by Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin couldnt even lace Marios skates!
Beautiful! Honestly, with Mario gone, I just can't watch hockey like I used to. I'll always cherish my Dec '96 Lemieux jersey, never knew that he would retire at the end of that season, it's special :)
youhurtmyfeelings: where are you bitch? im waiting to pound your ass. hows sex with your mom? does she love your small ugly dick? i hope she gives you aids. that whore mother of yours. your bitch ass is mine. always remember that nigger!

LOL u fukkin asswipe
sorry i forgot your the grammar police. ..."a good, valid attempt"
Also, your not being precise. You just find a mispelling or grammar error and then call a person a loser. I mean it is YouTube, i am not gonna spell check my comments, i have better things to do with my life. Appearently you don't though. But, if it makes you feel better i admit defeat, you have won this all important internet war of words. Go celebrate with some beer and strippers. Peace. Have a nice life.
Well you were doing a pretty piss poor job at insulting me and that last comment was a good valid attempt at it. But, i see you have reverted into calling me a simple "loser" once again.... oh well.
youhurtmyfeelings: what the fuck is wrong with you dip shit? do you want me to come down to your rat infested home and beat your head off? cant you have a normal conversation with anybody? if you cant say anything nice then shut the fuck up you bitch!
youhurtmyfeelings: when you arrive in hell the devil is gonna stick his big red fireball cock up your ass and burn you up. you fucking bitch. im going to heaven because i dont deny god like you bitch ass faggot!
Well you would know what "bitchy little girls" would say, seeing as you are one. Now if you can't come back with something half way creative, just give up and go troll somewhere else. Have a nice life.
now this proves your a loser. You came back with that? How about something more original than a simple "momma" joke? Pshh, Please.... if thats the best you got, i'm done with you.
youhurtmyfeelings is my nigger lol. yeah thats right you my bitch man! lol you fucking stink, go and create some videos, act like a man, then come back and post legit comments here or youll get fucking bashed by whoever deems you retarded lol
Lemieux, Jagr and Francis were the best line of the 90's, not all-time. The best line all-time is Anderson-Gretzky-Kurri. Lemieux was better than Gretzky though. But not as good as Bobby Orr. Anderson and Kurri were better wingmen than Jagr and Francis. Jagr couldn't play defence with the Pens and Francis was ok PK guy. Kurri was second greatest PK winger all-time behind Bob Gainey. And Anderson could play the PK too. Just wasnt his specialty.
holy cow your the first person ever to make a connection like that with my name.................................. Not surprising a Penguins fan would get mad about his unofficial nickname.
Try google "Maryo Lemieux". You'll probably just find your own comment. I'm just saying that I've never ever heard anyone call him MARYo. Super Mario and Le magnifique ring a bell though.
I don't need to goggle it cause i know I've heard it before.
-Yes i have heard Le magnifique before as well.
-There is NO DOUBT Lemieux is a great player, and it is made obvious in this video. But, you can't deny that really needed some cheese with his wine, sometimes...
haha your such a fucking faggot.. you even iffended yourself by posting that comment. but its ok, there a lot of people that were born retarded and you have clearly proven that you are such
dude i didn't mean to post that comment to you.. my bad. i remember that i was drunk when i posted this but i still remember that i wasn't directing it towards you. my bad. and when i am sober my comments are classic..
Mike Lange is awesome...but Stan Savran is such a jerkoff. He contributes nothing to the game but only tells you what you just looked at. "Nice pass out of the zone." I just saw it. "The defense shifts over to Francis." Yep, just happened two seconds ago. He might as well say "Did you see that? So did I. Back to you Mike." Lange is fun to listen to but Savran...
Me and my dad were at this game! I STILL have the ticket stub too! Section C27 Seats 4 & 5. I remember alll the fans were chanting "We Want 6" for a solid 2 mintues.
My dad and I were supposed to go to this game but I got the flu and we gave the tix to one of my best friends and his brother. The only game we missed that year, how ironic
Mario Lemieux had another dominating performance against guys on the Blues like Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull. If Lemieux hadn't had those injuries and disease, he would have been close to catching Gretzky in some of the NHL player statistics!
hockey was beast to watch in the 80s and 90s

@ivand87a gretzky had talent over his carrer Lemieux was the Penguings for 9 years of his career then he had hogdikins then he retired so there for lemieux is better
cbone72 1 year ago
i think boby orr would have been the best but his knees ruined his carreer
VHfrankenstein5150 2 years ago
if mario were healthy more years u best belive the record books would be all marios
pbcj55 2 years ago 41
@pbcj55 Definately. Less than a 915 games and scored 690 goals. That's 500 games less than Gretzky :) 200 goals in 500 games, with Lemieux' scoring prowess would've been easy.
11DNA11 1 year ago
Gretzky is the greatest of all time...his records show it.
HOWEVER
Had Lemieux been on a team like the oilers and been healthy hewould have come close if not beat the all time point record that Gretzky hold.
Lemieux had a special talent that has yet to be matched
Silentstep66 3 years ago
With the same number of matches played, Gretzky would have 50 points ahead of Lemieux.
1 723 in 915 matches for Lemieux
2 857 1 487 for Wayne Gretzky
Adds the difference of 500 matches, plus chronic back problems, and cancer.
And he never had a team like Edmonton.

T'as toujours été le meilleur MArio !

Oh trust me I know Mario Lemieux is the best hockey player ever! Nobody can touch him. Kids today are amazed by Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin couldnt even lace Marios skates!

had mario been healthy throughout his entire career, gretzkys records would not be standing

Beautiful! Honestly, with Mario gone, I just can't watch hockey like I used to. I'll always cherish my Dec '96 Lemieux jersey, never knew that he would retire at the end of that season, it's special :)

MrCool63 3 years ago
Well you were doing a pretty piss poor job at insulting me and that last comment was a good valid attempt at it. But, i see you have reverted into calling me a simple "loser" once again.... oh well.

OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago
That was the best line. Mario/Jagr/Francis. They finished 1.2.3 in scoring for a few years in a row.

Great skill player but there is a reason why the rest of the league called him MARYo Lemieux......
MrCool63 4 years ago
Obviously names can be misleading...MrCool...
LetsGoPens16 4 years ago
holy cow your the first person ever to make a connection like that with my name.................................. Not surprising a Penguins fan would get mad about his unofficial nickname.
MrCool63 4 years ago
mrcool's a fuckin dumbass... nobody calls him that... he could stick up for himself
magnifique66 3 years ago
Try google "Maryo Lemieux". You'll probably just find your own comment. I'm just saying that I've never ever heard anyone call him MARYo. Super Mario and Le magnifique ring a bell though.
Rehtomflow 4 years ago 2
I don't need to goggle it cause i know I've heard it before.
-Yes i have heard Le magnifique before as well.
-There is NO DOUBT Lemieux is a great player, and it is made obvious in this video. But, you can't deny that really needed some cheese with his wine, sometimes...
MrCool63 3 years ago
haha your such a fucking faggot.. you even iffended yourself by posting that comment. but its ok, there a lot of people that were born retarded and you have clearly proven that you are such

Tisk tisk PGH, tisk tisk, that is the best you can come up with? A common insult? I expected better that that...

dude i didn't mean to post that comment to you.. my bad. i remember that i was drunk when i posted this but i still remember that i wasn't directing it towards you. my bad. and when i am sober my comments are classic..
fromthepgh 3 years ago

Gotta love Stan doing color. Lemieux abuses John Casey yet again.

My dad and I were supposed to go to this game but I got the flu and we gave the tix to one of my best friends and his brother. The only game we missed that year, how ironic

I think this a few days after Mario's son was born prematurely. After learning his son would make it, he celebrated by cleaning the Blues' clocks.

Mario Lemieux had another dominating performance against guys on the Blues like Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull. If Lemieux hadn't had those injuries and disease, he would have been close to catching Gretzky in some of the NHL player statistics!
