Yeah, it really bothers me that Americans don't know their own laws that well. The reason the FTC law doesn't affect older videos is because of "ex post facto" (after the fact) which is a pretty commonly used legal term here. Like girls freaking out and deleting all their videos... that was hilarious. It's not like the FTC is going to watch the millions of videos on here anyway haha but I do think it's a good law since not everyone disclosed what they got for free.
Just wondering... I think it is awesome what they are doing, but what is going to keep people from not lying? I believe in the good of people and know most people will be honest, but what if they just say they bought it with their own money when they did not. Also wondering, if say you worked for MAC and you bought something from MAC with your own money, you would then need to disclose you work for them/are affiliated, correct?
I would assume that since the Federal Trade Commission is an agency of the U.S government, this legislation would not affect YouTube users outside of U.S jurisdiction. Maybe I'm wrong?
this is a good thing esp for some of the bigger gurus esp juicystar07 and allthatglitters b/c they never say if they were sent stuff and lie so bad in their reviews
I dont understand what is wrong with saying if you are getting paid to review products, I mean that is just being honest right, or if you got the products from the company, lots of gurus already do this and I respect them more for it, it makes me take what the review is worth with a grain of salt.
I have seen alot of guru's being sent products from new brands, and I've always wondered how their products are made. Who exactly makes them, and how. Some are not being regulated for safety. I understand new brands wanting to get their feet off the ground... But there must have been an issue with more than just beauty brands.
I actually heard one person saying you have to answer those four questions EVERY time you mention a brand name. So I guess in their mind if you mentioned going to McDonalds in a vlog, you'd have to answer the 4 questions to say you aren't sponsored by McDonalds. :P
Silly how out of control these rumors are getting.
This is American legislation, doesn't effect anyone else in the world! You don't need to do anything, there's not obligation unless you live in the US. Nothing to do with who your subs are or where your products came from.
Hey Gemma, just an FYI.. Most of the time I watch YT from my cell and today I couldn't watch any of the gurus that i'm sub to that are in a different country. When i go to watch a video it goes back to my main page and says at the top in red letters : This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions... That really sucks cuz I watch YT in between classes or on the bus home from school nd now I can only watch the American YTubers :( from my cell...
Even if you have nothing to disclose with the company, if you mention it at all you STILL have to answer the questions in the sidebar because when you dont mention it in the video no one is going to know if you have actually been paid, or been sent products.
well they will know, because if you disclose information ie say 'i have been paid or sent this for free' they will know you have. if you say nothing, it means you have nothing to disclose ie have no relationship with the company and bought it with your own money.
gah im glad you made a video about this , people are getting crazy and putting disclaimers on things that dont need them like fashion of the days rofl
what the hell is that buzzing/ringing noise !?!?

Thanks for this video! I wanted to ask you - is this only for Americans or us, European youtubers have to disclose information too? Thank you!

i think people are just disclosing to cover themselves. if they dont say anything they might not know about it, or forget to do it. etc.

So do you think the FTC legislation covers being paid to feature promotions (as opposed to reviews?)
