I'm willing to bet if Jellico stayed in command and another offer of his own ship came for Riker, he would have taken it then, and half the crew with him. Insubordinate or not
This is probably one of the most intellectual discussions on all of YouTube. May I weigh in?
Jellico *is* a father with a young son. He is not a monster. And remember that he understands the Cardassian wolf pack mentality. And remember that this is not space exploration, reaching out to other civilizations. This is a time of potential war, and everything needs to be peak efficiency. And everyone must follow orders without question, if the Enterprise is to survive a possible fight.
Riker is such a jerk, he wanted to sit and pout while Picard was being tortured and the Cardassians were threatening an invasion. Captain Jellico was able to save Picard and stop the war and was even big enough to take a lot of insubordination from Riker and put his pride aside to get those things done.
Riker's an arsehole. So many episodes he loses his rag and starts acting emotionally. I wouldn't want to be following his orders if he were in charge. He's worse than Worf.
Well that happens when you "drop ranks", you get the truth straight up and no chaser! Will handed his azz to him on a stick and rightfully so. Jellico has an authoritarian style of leadership and that only is effective for so long so in essence he put himself behind the eight ball coming in the way he did. Riker was within his right to put him in his place.
@JSpearman4 Given you are attacking a character, I'd think you should understand the social concepts and why the writing here showing jellico as the bad guy is really a veiled propaganda.
@DLPBurke Ok, I'm really not going to go back and forth over a TV show but I will say this and I am done. THIS IS A TV SHOW! How did I attack a character, as you said? My statement was that Jellico got what he did because he dropped ranks. His style is authoritarian in nature, again, not opinion, this is the truth. In dropping ranks 2 the average viewer this means "speak your mind" & Will did just that. Will had a point & made it, I have no problems w/ what he said. This is TV Not the Army.
People always made Jellico out to be a villian but i think he probably was a good captain. Just a different style than Picard. People like Geordi were just whining because he made them do extra work.
No one here as even clocked that Riker never stood up when Jellicoe came into the room a total lack of respect towards the Captain, insobordinate again!
I loved it when Riker told Jellico what kind of captain he is, I agree 100%. Riker doesn't take crap from anyone.

@JSpearman4 Evidently you have never seen how the army works. Trek writers certainly haven't.

@JSpearman4 It is a TV show yes, that does not mean that you can excuse bad writing or attack a character without knowing what you are on about.

"Will-full" Because, y'know, can't have our Will's with wills in them! 'specially not in a command position!

Haha. Riker can be such a prick when he wants to be.

As much as I despise him, he was big enough to come ask Riker in person and not just send Counselor Troi.

Anyone notice how Riker was reading Picard's book. It's a symbol of loyalty.

@baz2186 I understand why. That was to show that Riker didn't respect Jellico too much
