  • The queens of the stone age version is way better

  • No badgering fucker's gonna boss me around.

Great line to start the song.

  • Come here by me, I want you here

Nightmares become me, it's so fucking clear

these lines just tear my heart to pieces every single time..

  • Some people just reads too much into some songs... Why not hust enjoy? Only the writer knows the true meaning..

  • You know what I just realized? A few years ago, before YouTube exploded, the first artist I ever searched on the then unknown YouTube was ELLIOTT SMITH. CHEERS! <3 Elliott.

  • What a great version! I always liked this song.

  • I prefer Elliott's studio drumming over this white-T guy's :P

  • there's so much suppressed anger in that song

  • In 1994 I was living in Portland OR. and everyone was talking about Elliot and I just thought it was a lot of undeserved hype........wow, I was wrong!!! Awesome song!!! Love you Eliot and I wish you were still around.

  • God I wish I could have seen or met this guy one time

  • OSI really gives this one it's due, by recognizing his talent and vamping it up I think they really did this sucker justice.

  • i have a strange feeling he was fucked up when he did this concert

  • @crashedsurver gee WHATEVER gives you that impression?

  • Why can't people just appreciate It for what it is, if your like me and you like Smith listen to it and all your other artist like Kurt etc listen to and appreciate. I'm fed up of trying to convert people to listen to it when they just come out with the bull that's bin said here. Everyone has opinions, live with it.

  • Wow, if you read some of the previous messages there are some really agitating people... most notably Bendrix and azrial. I've always thought that Elliott fans had better taste than that!

  • Wow, what a vibe, what an awesome driven groove. The drummer is really paying service to the song.

  • I saw him I think 4 times before he died, and this performance will never leave me.

  • I often watch this video as oppose to listen to the studio cut. I love the element the drummer adds to it, especially the big cymbals coming into the chorus. also im in love with elliotts voice live and the fact that you can tell from the intro his guitar isnt perfectly in tune. long live the genius.

  • i was very surprised to learn there is a QOTSA cover of this song..

  • This will stuck in my head till the end of this week.....or maybe till the end of my life :D

  • @mahatanmacoat

It's "nightmares become me, it's so fucking clear"

But obviously it wasn't fucking clear enough for you. Show some fucking respect and actually open your ears when you listen to Elliott. It sounds nothing like "my nerves", little disrespectful brats like you really piss me off, you don't deserve to hear any of this man's music.

  • @Bendrix27 I stand corrected and thanks for pointing it out but Who made you the head of the Elliott (Steven) police anyway? There's a thing to correct somebody, but to do it in that manner is just not civil. I have all of Elliott's albums, Mr perfection. I wasn't disrespecting Elliott. That's what i honestly thought what he was singing and i related to that as I'm nervy myself. NEVER meant to offend anyone. And just for the the record how can a 39 year old man be a brat you pompous...

  • @Bendrix27 It could sound like that to some one listening, (bad ears) or possibly one of the first times listening to it.

I'll be one the first to say there isn't one Elliott Smith song I don't absolutely love, but to call him one of the greatest lyricists isn't even all that close.

Also Elliott Smith can be a decent offender for almost leaving out entire sounds of a word for a few of his songs, they are there but when he does it, it's very faint.

Also, Kurt Cobain wasn't so talented.

  • @VincentPrice111 You are saying Elliott wasn't a brilliant lyricist? I don't believe that claiming he is one of the greatest lyricists is that far off. Sure, it's opinion, but he had a really delicate way with words that is hard to touch.

"I heard you found another audience to bore. A creative thinker who imagined you were more. A new body for you to push around and pose, but it's all about taking the easy way out for you I suppose."

"Someone found the future as a statue in a fountain.."

    Mice.

  • @mrbungs Maybe he says things in a weird way, but he's certainly not a poet like Nick Drake was, and don't get me wrong there is no one I'd rather listen to, over and over. There probably isn't one of his songs that doesn't constantly loop in my head through out the day. So I'm not trying to insult him or anything, he just doesn't seem to be talking about anything that intelligent, or phrasing it intelligently of course, that said I do think his lyricism is quite a bit above average like an 7.5

  • @VincentPrice111 This song is about his addiction and someone close to him bringing people to him, trying to get him to quit. That is quite intelligent. His lyricism is incredible. No one comes close to his phrases and word schemes. In all reality, he wrote about his personal life and it was a hell of a ride for him you can not top that. He is one of the greatest song writers of all time.

  • @LucasHartwell I don't exactly see why that is intelligent. It's as much about what you're singing about as how you're saying it. Look at three day's grace for instance, they don't even try to write intelligently. Now, don't think I'm comparing the two, I love no other musician or group than I do Elliott Smith but I just don't think he's the or one of the best at writing/wordplay/metaphore ETC. I do think he's one of the most soulful musicians I've heard, he means what he sings, and you can tell

  • @LucasHartwell Of course, I love this guy and my opinion doesn't really matter anymore then the next guys, lets just enjoy this mans' great music instead of fighting over the details.

Though I see what you mean, what he speaks is from the heart and he does phrase it rather well, IE intelligently.

  • @VincentPrice111 I think, instead of saying that he is the best or one of the best song writers. It is better to say he is one of the most honest song writers. Honest to himself in what he want's to actually sing out. Agree?

  • @OBLBonehead Like I said, soulful. Shit he sings is from the heart AND TRUISMS

  • @VincentPrice111 I know, just saying. =D

  • @OBLBonehead Awww ye

  • @VincentPrice111 You're a tough one to please, eh? Go read the lyrics for A Passing Feeling. Then read them again. Then let that sink in. He's always singing about something. All his lyrics were deeply personal, and that's what makes him so genuine and engaging. We're all able to have our own opinion, and I'm not telling you that you're wrong. I'm just asking you to read deeper, because it seems like you've missed a lot of very important things that Elliott's said.

  • bad ass song

  • woah

  • Don't go the same way. Seek help. A crying shame to lose such a talent. Reach out. It's just a phase you got to get through. Noone said it would be easy. Fight.

  • I like the qotsa studio version of this song more than elliott's, but THIS is actually the best version of the song at all.

  • QOTSA cover takes this song to a new level of awesomeness

  • @KillerOrAssassin97 no it doesn't. qotsa are my second favorite band next to zeppelin. but elliott's version is better.

  • @azrial4421 People like you are retards and easily offended. He was making a joke about the song being depressing, not making fun of Elliotts death. Oh and I'm sure you've made jokes about touchy subjects in your life, I hope you fucking fall from your ivory tower. /Fuck you

  • @thinvana Haha you blind hypocrite. Offended? haha dumbass...hang yourself idiot we have enough dumbasses in this world.

  • @azrial4421 OK, explain how I'm a hypocrite. I'm not offended by what you said, I'm just telling you you're wrong. Also I see your comments been removed.

  • @thinvana I dont care about you.

  • @azrial4421 Lol no your the retard

  • he was amazing. hopefully he's happier and in a better place. r.i.p.

  • Exist somewhere DVD torrent of this show ?

  • This is one my favorite songs. The lyrics are so pissed and cynical with a hint of remorse for even opening up in the first place. That's what I get form it. I feel like that all the time. I've never seen this version. Its pretty awesome.

  • "Fake concern says 'What's the matter, man?' and you think I oughtta shake your motherfucking hand." There is more anger put into those words than anything... I get that in my head a lot.

  • killing yourself with booze is weak its not that addictive hes a writer and singer hes life must not be that bad that he kills him self with booze

  • @QOTSAPT life is what you make it, depression makes it that way

  • He didn't kill himself with booze... He stabbed himself in the heart.. twice.

  • @marcwnelson you didnt get it i said he had killed him self with booze cause it destroyed his life

  • every word sung oozes such emotion. such a powerful song.

"don't be cross/this sick i want" is haunting.

this is a man who makes every other musician seem soulless.

  • Elliott was an alcoholic, I guess. That's how he got through his problems. Sad. Thanks for the music before you left us, thought.

  • Just to straighten out the confusion -Smith was a Heroin and crack addict-not an alcoholic

  • yes, but Im pretty sure he was an alcoholic first. I'm an addict but definitely an alcoholic as well

  • No bad dream fucker's gonna boss me around.

    Thanks for posting.

  • elliott suffered from night terror (intense nightmare experiences). the song is about drinking Christian Brothers brandy to help him sleep through the night.

"No bad dream fuckers gona boss me around,

Christian Brothers gona take him down."

  • night terror- "Nightmares become me, its so fucking clear."

  • Whats this song about?

  • Christian brothers was a company that made alcohol or something.

  • Oh. I thought it was about alcohol... or something. Haha.

  • damn! this version is fucking heavy. elliott never ceases to amaze me

  • nightmares become me it's so FUCKING clear.

  • Six months later after my first comment on this version and this song is even heavier than when I first heard it.

    Brilliant...

  • mm..hmmm.. <3

  • This is his best song, love it

  • neil young should do some elliott smith covers

  • oh my god! how amazing would that be? haha i can imagine him doing that, QOTSA do a fairly good version of this.

  • @kurtisblow3000 That's the best idea I've heard in a while..

  • @kurtisblow3000 Wow, that'd actually be pretty interesting: the grandfather of grunge honoring the late grandson.

  • @coltonmil Elliott Smith was not grunge. he was everything 'grunge' wasn't

  • @williampatrickcorgan

Clearly you know nothing of grunge.

If you really listen to Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley's music, you'll find they're attempting to get across an almost identical message to what Elliott was, they just express it in their own ways, but just as passionately as each other.

They sing about the same things.

The 3 best lyricists and vocalists to have grazed this tainted soil.

But now their souls are free, and something tells me they were headed on similar orbits.

  • I bet they're all jamming out right now with Hendrix, writing some great new material, if you listen closely to the sky, you can hear them.

Bob Marley's with them, but he's not jamming at the moment, he's rollin' up a few blunts, and once they get started puffin' on those dragons, it's gonna be one cloudy day.

Next time it's cloudy, just imagine it's because they're all up there, seshing out, with no worries.

  • @Bendrix27

Elliott Smith's style wasn't rooted in a specific tone or scene - he was a one off and had a much more varied songwriting ability than bands that were singularly 'grunge' or 'alt-rock' -

you lazily lump Kurt, Layne and Elliott together - but if you knew or bothered to read about them you'd realise they have very different circumstances and all produced totally different types of music/lyrics

  • @kurtisblow3000 Damn good, gifted one!!! Now you've made me picture it too much and wonder why it isn't so...

  • This makes me upset. Why did we lose such a talented and touching person so early? His music is perfection... It's a shame, really.

  • Cause his demons wanted to.. its a shame yes..

  • Demons he created himself.

  • @Capriccio01 Because he was into some seriously heavy drugs, a very depressed man, and quite possibly because his then girlfriend wanted him dead.

    It's unsure.

  • No bad dream fucker's gonna boss me around.

  • i've just started listening to his acoustic stuff--i think i like this even better. thanks for the post.

  • I listened to this song as I drove on the autobahn (German highway) no speed limits and then I stopped to sleep in my car next to a Belgian parked next to me. I'm just saying small world made big in my mind but irrelevant as I existed beyond this planet thanks to Elliott Smith.

  • I'm not 100% sure what you just said. But I think I love you. ^_^_^

  • If you ask me, this is the definitive version.

  • Seems like the truly passionate artists kill themselves, which is ok to me if thats what they wanted. But I just wish I coulda been in the same room just once when they sang their amazing songs, like this one.

  • i agree. his voice sounds amazing here.

one of my favorite songs. [:

  • "Nightmares become me its so fucking clear."

  • my favourite song ever

  • eh ?

  • fuckin genius

  • I wonder what he was on at this point that made his voice like this.

  • What do you mean, ornge123? His voice is amazing! Maybe it's a little "off" sometimes, but that's usually when he is actually on something, not sober.

  • How do you know that?

  • I can't say I know 100%, but the shows I have reviewed where it was known that he was extremely drunk (Sunset Junction & Henry Fonda Theater, for example), his voice is often off-key.

  • Oh okay.

  • I was at the Henry Fonda shows, and he was not fucked up in any way.

  • I'm sorry- I'm probably wrong, but I was just going based on what a few people said, and just based on the fact that his singing changes when he's drunk. But honestly, I really can't say that for sure, especially cause you were there and I wasn't. The show was really good, though- I really liked the recording of him singing Brand New Game and songs off From A Basement.

  • excellent in every way...

  • i agree with roundwounds, his voice is spectacular here. great version of this song

  • Probably my favorite song of all time by Elliott. This made it even more special. I miss 'em so much... ;_;

  • What is that crash cymbal?

  • Why does he pronounce so differently here?

    Anyhow, this is awesome...

  • Hearing this version makes me want to do a solo electric cover; great version of this song!

  • Man, his voice sounds amazing here.

  • Not even close, the intensity of this rendition is SO much greater than the studio.

  • Studio and live versions of songs are two completely different things. They can't even be compared.

  • Not true, look up Give the mule what he wants by Queens of the Stone Age, studio and live. Both are their own renditions and both are epic. Don't get me wrong I've seen some QotSA live videos that I would call shitty. I just do not think this live version of the song is not that good. Sorry the close minded kids couldnt handle my opinion and gave me a thumbs down.

  • yep, cause everyone who disagrees with u is "close minded", great thought process there

  • questa canzone è fantastica...mi ricorda troppe cose, tutte...

  • 2:35 to 3:00

    so intense

  • /watch?v=fFH0khjgA0U

  • Brilliant song! Great version!

  • Elliotts playing a vintage Gibson ES 330. Basicly the same as the "Epiphone Casino" that John Lennon made famous. I'm guessing his amp is a Vox or Top Hat AC 30. I love his sound :)

  • what kind of guitar is elliott using?1?1/

  • gibson es330 or somthing like that

  • One of a few videos I always can happily watch and appreciate. Such a good performance of an amazing track. Beautiful!

  • such an amazing voice and so unique such a sad way his life ended

  • Comment removed

  • I love Elliott, but his backing band was really lame on this tour . . . drummer couldn't keep tempo, harmonies are all off. . . he's absolutely incredible though.

  • ehrmm.. I'm not sure about that. I think they all did fine.. Of course it's Elliott who makes this so brilliant but I think the backing band did their job. Besides I think this electric version and this specific performance is amazing. It's actually more enjoyable than any other clip I've seen of Christian Brothers, so...

  • Elliott Smith looks a lot like John Denver if you ask me. This and Rose Parade are his best songs.

  • Did Elliot Smith do the original version of this song...?

  • yes

  • beautiful song. Loved the solo too actually - I usually think guitar solos are selfindulgent but that was breif and moving.

  • Such a powerful version of the song . In my opinion , this version has more vibe in it than the studio one . Long Live Elliott .

  • The live version is so much better than the studio version in my opinion... Such an awesome song.

  • Okay about the whole interpol thing, interpol as a band didn't even form till 97, Elliott Smiths self titled album came out in 95. Do the math.

  • i wonder if this song had anyhitng to do with christian brothers brandy?

  • yes it does.

    hey, nice name, fella. heh

  • Yeah, I thought it might be. Hey, does anyone know if Elliott owned a Ep Casino?

  • wow, just checked Interpol. At first they sounded cool, until I realized they sound the same in almost every song. Elliott is light years ahead of any band like that. Like John Lennon, you only get a few like them at a time. The rest pretend :) Elliott was one of a kind.

  • I thought this song was about Elliotts response to Dream Works BS. He really pissed them off. He told them where to go. This song might be about that or something else.

  • Pretty confident this song was written well before Elliott even had a major deal

  • nothing like interpol

  • maybe interpol sounds a bit like elliott

  • Nice

  • Well, yeah... since they are a newer band.

Why did I get all the thumbs down? It wasnt a negative comment at all.

  • WHY WOULD YOU LOL!

  • This is so damn good.

  • What a haunting song this is

  • Really? do you know of any videos on youtube showing Elliott with a casino? do you know what color he had?

  • this song is so amazing

  • please tell me what cd this is off.

  • elliott smith by elliott smith, its an acoustic version on the CD though. Still sounds class.

  • This song is extremely difficult to play and sing..... elliot is one of a kind,

alot of people dont dig it when he has a band behind him.... i think the band does his songs alot of justice, very classy shit as you said.

  • "Fake concerns is whats the matter man!

&&nd you think i outta shake your Mother Fucking hand!?

I know how much you care..."

I will Never get over this song.

    It is just amazing.

    &&nd live... absolutely Magnificent!

  • is that gibson es 335 or es 330?

  • ES 330. IIRC, Elliott used two: one tuned to an open tuning, and one to standard.

  • it's a 330, you can tell it's not a 335 as you can see by the trapeze tailpiece (the 335's do not have this). The 330 is a fully hollow body guitar so it can't mount the tailpiece to the actual body of the guitar. The 335 is a semi-hollow so it has a solid slab of wood in the middle for the tailpiece to be mounted on.

  • Yeah that's a 330 but he also played an Epiphone casino with the P90 pickups.

  • "Nightmaaaaares become me it's so fuuuucking cleeeeeeeeeeear!" ;P I love that line.

  • ....this is beautiful

  • yeah its savage, qotsa do a cover, not as good but pretty good

  • If it is possible. I would love to get the audio track as well...

Sorry but I love Elliott and this is one of my favorite songs, in an amazing version. The sound quality is wonderful for a live version and drums are sick!

    Thanks

  • is there a way you can give me the audio to this? cause i really love this song live :)

  • you think i outta shake your mother fucking hannddd! so good this song live. Drums are so good in this one.

    Check my channel out!

  • Whats elliots amp?

  • In this song it looks like a Vox AC-30, although I have seen him with Top Hat amps, which makes sense because I know they make some models that sound very similar to AC-30s.

  • the guitar tone is really amazing here

  • JoyToy is a lil idiot.

  • People don't argue and just listen!
