Tex lived in Manly and was an enthusiastic amateur radio user - he had radios set up from one end of his room to the other. He used to do the 'wheeere do you get it!' ads for Best and Less back in the early 80's. Its a shame that his doctor was treating him for pleurisy for several months when in fact he had cancer and it was not diagnosed until days before he died. He came to see dad about a month prior and he looked a shadow of himself - a real legend for sure.
I like this version ... but I also like Johnny Greenwood's version too - which is the one I remember best from my childhood. Gunsynd had retired before I died, but I can remember hearing the news that he'd been put down and I remember crying, because he became a part of my childhood through these two songs.
@roseanne74 , l am priviledged to have seen the MIGHTY GUNSYND race and believe me that l understand you crying of the news when he was put down. THere was something about Gunsynd that made him stand out from the rest and yes l shed a tear as well. But whenever l hear this song (which l still have on an old 45)l imagine seeing him racing around that bend and in his arrogance streak to the line. Long live the GOONDIWINDI GREY in our thoughts.
Great memories for me!! I left school in 1972 and went to work for a trainer in Melbourne. In 1973 at Rosehill in Sydney I was privileged to lead my horse in the parade ring. Behind me was Gunsynd and my favourite jockey Kevin Langby.
My dad is the fiddle player on this track. I was there in the old EMI sydney studios when Tex and Dad worked on this song back on a rainy saturday afternoon in 1973. I was eleven years old and Tex was an old mate of my dads. I am proud to have been witness to his little piece of recording history, though it did not seem it at the time. I had the original vinyl disc of this but lost it when I moved house - thank you for posting this, my dad died 20 years ago and this is a precious memory for me.
@Imamummy2 Thanks for the feedback....I paid closer attention to the fiddler this time... nicely done.. it's nice to know who these artists were... so many have now past on..... RIP George and Tex
@Imamummy2 i traveled with tex on his last road show i have the original 75 lp and the 45 picture records whitch tex gave me any info you want about tex reply to me bob taylor grumblegutz@yahoo.co.au
Thanks for uploading this one mate! My Great Uncle - Nev Hauritz wrote this song, it's great to see that it's still being enjoyed today.

I'm pretty sure this was the first picture disc in Australia. we still have it.
was lucky enough to see most of his sydney races 71-3. what a tart!
we used to have a sports show on FBI and I would give this the odd spin.
