no way.. was that part of the melodic line from autumn leaves at 2:57 if so, incredible to put it in there. i play random notes over the scale and am wondering if you could give any tips? maybe how you learned? a good book? thank you :) im looking for a teacher in the south florida (miami) but they are all classical pianist and id like to learn jazz.. any chance you do a workshop down here lol? :) keep it up you're great!
@alfredoball20 thanks so much! for me it was a combination of theory, listening to recordings, and a lot of experimenting at the keyboard alone and in jamming with others to discover sounds and notes that I like. a good book I recommend is The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine. Also it's a great idea to pick up ideas from recordings that you enjoy :) also check your local colleges, maybe there are some faculty that know jazz that you could study with? I'd love to do a workshop someday!! cheers -G
@EndlessMagic thank you!! I am mostly self taught in jazz. I did classical piano training throughout high school and attended some jazz workshops at local colleges. I also studied with a jazz piano teacher in Vancouver.
thanks very much for your comment! :) means a lot from a fellow musician.
@ilgallogiallo thanks! We used a Sony Minidisc recorder with a Sony Stereo Condenser microphone ECM-MS907 placed on a mic stand in front of the band. take care! - Geoff
I've been watching how you take the chords in Head part (theme/melody is called head isn't it?). the angle is just too sharp. I can see some though and trying to listen some off by ear.
thanks!! :) if you are comping behind a soloist or horn playing the melody, you can try to sometimes fill in the spaces they leave with some nice supporting voicings.
I really like trying to echo some of the rhythmic or melodic ideas that the soloist is doing in my comping (but not all the time of course!)...
Superb playing, you're all very talented. It's a pity the bassist is so low, he's doing great. :)
