32 looking ageless!!! And this video is soooooo now, with all off those dancingmovies coming out!!! I wonder if Björn and Benny were behind this...LOL
Time has been kind to this movie. The only reason it bombed in 1980 was it came at the end of the 70's, beginning of the 80's when splashy action and sci fi films were hitting it big (remember a little independent film called Star Wars).
i love those guys in the zoot suits doing all the break and street dancing moves !!.AWESOME !! and by the way , if i ever meet a girl like olivia , i'm marrying her the next day !!lol !! i just love her..my first celebrity crush..still love her !..she 's just so angelic !
rewatching this movie after so long to be truthful i liked it as a kid and i still like it now it was not that bad ..to call it one of the wrost movies ever was just wrong put it next to some of the bullshit that came out in the last 25 yrs its not bad at all i think we work and put it out in 3D might work
I think ONJ was my first crush. My best friend and I saw the Xanadu movie in 1980 when we were in 4th grade. We both immediately fell in love with Olivia. She beats the pants of the girls who try to sing today.
its nice to know im not some type of freak because i love this movie well mostly the music i think this movie has some of the best music in any movie i have ever seen or heard
@marcboss6, I like it so much that I taped it from a TV broadcast. Is underrated because musicals were not very popular back when it came out most likely. The cast is great the music amazing. the film itself is not that great altogether, but the cast & the music hold it together.
All time fave roler- derby/ olivia movie. The soundtrack is 70's at it's best, I should know,( was born 1n 79),I have many 45's and the lp. Only true love makes me feel so great!! Maybe not even that
Such memories.......Xanadu .....love it .....that summer it was that and "Beauty and the beast " by the go go's "Autoamerican " by Blondie and Pat Benetar.........
I never thought Olivia Newton John was hot until I saw this video, but wow is she ever. The video itself though made her look like she was on her way to becoming an operating thetan.
@jackslicl100 Good point! She actually had talent, didn't have to keep taking her pants off every five minutes to keep people interested! Also, she could sing.
@jackslicl100 Although I don't really care for Britney Spears, I'd be willing to bet if you gave them both a song to sing on the spot that Britney would do a better job. She has sang professionally since childhood so don't knock her talent as she's put in her ten thousand hours already.
God, she looks so @&%*ing good in that brown thingy she's wearing here. I remember it as a kid. The movie was as inane as they come, but she sure could sing and always looked killer. No offense to anyone who liked the film, but it did kill Michael Whateverhisname's career. It didn't do her film career much good, either, though the soundtrack did well.
@Toodlem michael beck was and still is lousy in ANYTHING he does and he appears as a character actor every now and then and it makes me cringe. whoever paired him up with the gorgeous Olivia Newton-John needed his head examined. the movie was horrible, the plot absurb and the script must have sprang from a 12 year old. for Gene Kelly it was supposed to be a last hoorah but turned out as a forgettable movie
I was about 17 or 18 and far too arrogant and aloof to have anything to do with this and when it came out.
I was into the underground jazz-funk scene and thought I was too cool to touch.
Maybe I'm getting camp in middle age, but I think this is such a beautiful song, sung by such a beautiful and talented artist and such a wonderfully constructed vid. The colour, the choreography. . .even the roller skates and sound effects. . . .I just love the entire lot
Our family went to the old Pan Pacific in L.A. shortly after the movie came out and will never forget it. Sadly, there was no protection on this old great building and someone burned it when they were planning on restoring it. What a tragedy.
@andy78100 Are you kidding me, her beauty is hard to match no these days. She's priceless something that Angelina Jolie nor Megan Fox could ever hold. In this movie, she was already in her early thirties. Very nice movie but underrrated. Loved Gene Kelly's Performance in this movie.
In defense of those of us alive when this horrible film was made, many of us heaped abuse upon it at the time. A few nice songs and Olivia at her hottest, but not enough to save it.
There were so many hopes for this film before it came out. Olivia Newton John was coming off the heels of Grease. They were expecting another huge hit. The studio put so much money into this film. I remember the premiere was huge and then the film hit theaters. It barely lasted a week. It was a bomb. The album was a hit though and spawned several top ten hits. The film has become a cheesy cult classic. The recent broadway version turned it into a comedy and it's been a huge success.
I remember when my boyfriend and I first watched this. It was in 2009. And I was born in 84.. how did I not see it sooner?? And I was sober at that.. yow, I still loved it! Probably would have been better experienced with a nice nostril coating of cocaine, oh well! I love the bad writing. "Guys like me shouldn't dream anyway."
A wonderful film which is much misunderstood because it bridges the gap between 1940s and 1980. The near-seamless arrangement combining these disparate musical styles is woven and held tight by the dancing of Gene Kelly and the singing of Olivia Newton John. A fabulous film which tells the never-ending story of the search for love throughout the ages. A classic that will outlive all the myopic critics!
Reminds of my first crush in 4th grade, along with Steisands woman in love and olivias-magic. Cat deely from so you think you can dance reminds of olivia.
I Couldnt agree more westermorlad! I heard Sharlene's version driving home earlier and thought gosh this is appaling - not a patch on Olivia's beautiful voice..
Glad I found this so I could confirm what I thought............. Sharleen Spiteri's cover is appalling!! Her voice is not capable of the range required for this song. I suppose that just illustrates that Olivia is an exceptional singer.
I agree with samdathi. The combination of challenging chord construct and the innovative use of crescendo and decrescendo make this work a particularly excellent piece of music.
The movie, Xanadu, is not good, unfortunately. Tthe actor is Michael Beck (he played the role of Swan the classic movie, The Warriors). ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) is one of the biggest selling bands in music history. Jeff Lynne, basically the leader of the group, is a brilliant songwriter and musician. If you are not familiar with their work, check it out.
As per the note left by oxoPCetoxo -- I erased the thumbs-down because I'm guessing that the person who left it doesn't know that saying ELO used to be "the shit" is slang for saying they used to be "the greatest." Note he adds that he "used to like their tunes back then." Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!
ay your name 10 times 2. say your mom's name 5 times 3. say your crushes name 3 times 4. paste this to 4 other songs. if you do this, your crush will kiss you on the nearest Friday. but if you read this and do not paste this, then you will have very bad luck. SEND THIS TO 5 SONGS IN 143 MINUTES. WHEN YOU'RE DONE PRESS F6 AND YOUR CRUSH'S NAME WILL APPEAR IN BIG LETTERS ON THE SCREEN. THIS IS SO FREAKY
how the film did overall doesnt matter to me. seeing and hearing Olivia Newton John was worth the price of admission. some MORONS pay $100.00 and more to see Britney Spears lip sync. GO FIGURE.. sorry Birtney,,, but this lady had REAL singing talent.. and she did it with her cloths on. WOW!!!!!
Strange... more than 20 years later I remember that one dancer in the purple crossover top, and even some of the specific dance moves... but the version of the vid they showed on TV back then had Gene Kelly in it.
I totally agree. This song is extremely well written. Complex and interesting chord progressions and melodies. Much like the music of Abba. A very clever and well constructed song indeed. You don't get pop songs like this today.
@samdathi you are absolutely right. we don't get pop song like this today. the kids are STUCK with Rap and Britney. the very thought is disgusting. nice comment SAMDATHI.......
@samdathi you can thank jeff lynne( lead singer and founder of ELO , and who very distinctly sings the back up vocals on this tune.).for this and many other fantastic , and well orchestrated songs...he's a genius..who else would the remaining beatles get to produce those songs they released during the anthology ?..jeff lynne..he was in john lennon's plastic ono band, produced george harrison, tom petty, was in and also produced traveling wilburys ..and the list goes on and on !!..he's a genius !
Miss these and other music videos from the 1960's to early 1990's, when music was so enjoyable to see and listen to. Today music is dominated by condescending rap chatter and mostly hip hop music that glorifies gang violence; sexism, racism and sexual perversion.
i really wish i could have lived to see and experience the 80s! man i wish i lived back then! this is the best movie ever!!! rock on Olivia and everyone, you rock!!
I was working at a movie theatre when we showed this film. One of the last type of Musical movies with a modern sound for the upbeat energy of youth, yeah good ELO songs really filled the theatre with good sound, not sure if the film was in stereo yet in 1980(don't think so) it did ok box office tickets
i have this dvd, great film, olivia and elo and the great gene kelly, did any fans notice that kelly uses the name danny mcguire, the same name he used in his movie cover girl
I remember seeing this movie when I was a teenager. It had such an impact on me. Olivia Newton-John has one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century.
Possibly one of the most powerful voices ever, this song mixed with E.L.O.'s music gave it an endless time of wonder. Her voice at the end of this song sends shivers up my spine when she hits that one high note. Beautiful music.
Xanadu-The last really spectacular Hollywood Musical of the 20th century! Olivia was absolutely stunning in this movie. Why can't Hollywood make Musicals anymore like this/
ELO were the English equivalent to ABBA when it came to making fabulous catchy pop songs. Whilst their talents were far and beyond this (try their earlier stuff), they knew how to make the MOOG SING and make you snap your fingers and sway along. And Olivia's arms movements when she sings 'we are in Xanadu' are so flipping sultry.
sharleen spiteri of the band Texas just attempted a cover of this on the Graham Norton show leading upto the new-year, for the BBC. Wofully bad.just as the high section comes in she cracks and changes pitch...... Just goes to show ONJ really does own this track

ay your name 10 times 2. say your mom's name 5 times 3. say your crushes name 3 times 4. paste this to 4 other songs. if you do this, your crush will kiss you on the nearest Friday. but if you read this and do not paste this, then you will have very bad luck. SEND THIS TO 5 SONGS IN 143 MINUTES. WHEN YOU'RE DONE PRESS F6 AND YOUR CRUSH'S NAME WILL APPEAR IN BIG LETTERS ON THE SCREEN. THIS IS SO FREAKY

It's been said that ONJ met Matt Lattanzi on this film but I could never find him. Is that him at 2:36??? Sure looks like him.

Yes that is him dancing with the asian lady wearing the purple top and white trousers.

how the film did overall doesnt matter to me. seeing and hearing Olivia Newton John was worth the price of admission. some MORONS pay $100.00 and more to see Britney Spears lip sync. GO FIGURE.. sorry Birtney,,, but this lady had REAL singing talent.. and she did it with her cloths on. WOW!!!!!

No wonder this film was nominated for a bunch of Razzie Awards (and won for worst director). As Esquire Magazine said "In a word "Xana-don't". "

Strange... more than 20 years later I remember that one dancer in the purple crossover top, and even some of the specific dance moves... but the version of the vid they showed on TV back then had Gene Kelly in it.

I've seen this movie over and over and the music, rollerskating and the simple love portrayed are never tiring to watch..

theatrical music and soft ballads from the 60's,70's,80's. r absoulutly well written todays singers dont compare 2 what the golden oldies did
ianhands1001 2 years ago 4

Yes, Jeff Lynne is an awesome musician. I love ELO.

Miss these and other music videos from the 1960's to early 1990's, when music was so enjoyable to see and listen to. Today music is dominated by condescending rap chatter and mostly hip hop music that glorifies gang violence; sexism, racism and sexual perversion.

that movie bombed at the time and was the end of Gene Kelly's career. It was to follow Grease & Saturday Night Fever, musicals were about over.
Olivia was really big time in the late 70's and you can see why.
carolerory 2 years ago
This movie didn't bomb, Twist of Fate did. Don't know where you lived at the time, but it did very well in many other places.

wow that much for the 80's!!
I was working at a movie theatre when we showed this film. One of the last type of Musical movies with a modern sound for the upbeat energy of youth, yeah good ELO songs really filled the theatre with good sound, not sure if the film was in stereo yet in 1980(don't think so) it did ok box office tickets

I remember seeing this movie when I was a teenager. It had such an impact on me. Olivia Newton-John has one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century.
jumbag 2 years ago 7

Goingdowntosouthpark 2 years ago 3
You`re right. I wish for no one to fail on national television (poor kid), but this tune belongs to Olivia Newton-John.
