@baseball33122 thanks for reminding me of my post I have re listened with better ear buds and a more open mind. My comment on the tempo was wrong the bassist was not rushing he was following the timp and the conductor. I do not like the interpretation but that does not mean he played badly I just did not like it as it was not as I remembered playing it. It may be the way the composer wanted it played and is growing on me I dont like the end of his solo I prefer the tuba entry
@sousaphone68 no worries. I personally like it best when the "ethnic dance" comes in. We all have our own interpretation/taste in regards to such music. That's what it was made for, I believe. Take care!
Not a fan of this rendering, but as to the post about this piece mocking Freres Jacques, I am quite sure it's the other way around as classical music serves as the melody for many musical pieces, both serious (i.e., church hymns and music) as well as little ditties like Freres Jacques. Just sayin'.
@weddedbs Actually, as Frere Jacques' first publication predates Mahler by at least 100 years and the tune itself by many more than that, your hypothesis seems difficult to admit...;) I would say it's often folklore serving as a basis for classical music...
@blingdude21 its suppose to suck that was the point of making it for the contrbass the bass cant go that high and when it does it sounds like that no matter how good you are the sounds its making is perfect for the mood since its actually mocking the song Freres Jacques and other childrens music
Absolutely great performance! its so delicate and coherent in the way bernstein puts it, the horror and the absurd, because its, i believe, about, life. The way Mahler works with "frere jacques", a song we sing as childs, and turns it into a funeral march, a song they sing at our death, see? thats why the solo at the beginning its so awful, it kind of warns us that there is more in it than the music you hear.
Merveilleux! La plus belle version sur youtube!

Is the part from 2.30 somehow similar to Smetana's "Moldova"? Maybe that's just my wrong impression..

@sousaphone68 It's meant to be "childish" and "grotesque"...I take it you think he did a nice job then :-)

I don't understand. The bass solo is supposed to be out of tune and out of tempo [question] Where did you pull that out from [question]
For me, it's more likely that the bassist was not in a good day. It happens.
Or maybe it was Bernstein's fault, who put Arturo Sandoval on the bass, instead of the trumpet!

Con todo respeto, el solo de contrabajo es asqueroso.

doesnt sound like a funeral march does it. Looks more like everyone is in a ruch to go home.
I like Benjamin Zander's version more.

The solo bass should be grotesque, it's not meant to sound pleasant.

@blingdude21 not at all.. Mahler wanted the solo to sound like this.. it should sound grotesc and the glissando have to be hearable..

there must be some intent behind that awful intro considering who's playing it. CSO-Solti is worth looking into

I prefer the San Francisco Symphony's version with Michael Tilson Thomas.

@Tokkemon
CSO-Solti is what i like the best.
a note on mahler and "bad" renditions...
mahler scored that bass intro to be "playful", imperfect, foolish...which is how this talented principal bass is playing it.
other renditions ignore mahler's absurd ideas and play it perfectly (it does sound pretty nice, admittedly)
sym 9 is usually played MUCH slower than mahler ever intended, and there are other examples of such little things.
mahler sacrificed some music to tell stories
