This is the first time I am seeing SPB with a crown of white hair - WOW. I grew up to all these songs - Illayaraja and SPB are the greatest in Tamil songs - they actually shaped the movie world in Tamil cinemas - kudos to their contribution, I cannot write enough - it won't describe even a jot of their contribution - they are valuable human beings to the history of mankind, Illayaraja is so talented and so i SPB they actually built each other up and that is great.

FYI, SPB is telugu (source: interview in Vijay TV with anu). He has sung the most number of songs in tamizh, I remember it so sure for two reasons

He got his first song national award in tamizh for Minsara Kanavu (Thanga Thaamarai )-1996. He had mentioned in an interview (in the early 2000's) that it was really tough to sing this song. He had also mentioned that , "this is my first national award in tamizh eventhough I have sung the most number of songs in tamizh"

If we notice ilaiyaraja composse some song using the single or double instrument only for one song. the example ilaiyanila-guitar, Nilavu Tunggum Neeram-mouth horgan and can say lot of example like this. for this song he composed the wholed song using the drum and trumpet only. this is the specialization of ilaiyaraja and that why we say don't compare Raja with others

Here's the difference.

Lately Rahman's songs have Sound over vocals (The latest being 80% of the overrated Sivaji the Boss) while Raja extracts his music with flair. He does it opposite. That's why I have more respect for Raaja. He has set the highest bar for all the directors and Rahman doesn't even come close.
