What no one on this page seem to realise is that Africa would not be in the state that its in if not for the European colonists. It's not just black people who do it either, it happens all over the world. Unfortunately the education offered in poverty ridden areas is of too poor a standard for the majority of children to see its benefits. They want immediate money rather than going through education and not even being guaranteed a job at the end of it.

I am assuming you have presented horrible examples of deteriorated buildings in Hillbrow and adjacent areas. Are there buildings that are still perfectly serviceable, though perhaps a bit less glamorous than their former glory days? People need housing, and it doesn't always have to be first rate and luxurious, just meeting certain standards - electricity working, plumbing working, that sort of thing.

My opinion, take it or leave it: Expats in other african countries, consider themselves to be just that, an expat and the african country they are living is not always considered to be their home. South Africans have made Africa there home, for generations, so much so that some black africans consider the Boers to be the White tribe of South Africa, compounded by statements made by Jacob Zuma himself earlier this year.

Actually a weak currency makes it cheaper to export products to other countries. For example the Yen is really stroing right now, but that isnt really good because the japanese economy relies on exporting goods, so does SA. Apartheid was basically affirmative action(on steroids) for whites.

Just like my city of birth Oakland, California, a once booming, happy, safe place until the 70's when whites were no longer in power and fled to the suburbs. Oakland is an extremely dangerous city now (carjackings,roberies) and I never go there anymore.

It has nothing to do with colour but overcrowding by the masses coming into the city looking for work and living 10 to a room awa lack of investment by landlords - obviously if a building is not maintained, for example, it will deteriorate. As for the rubbish strewn in the streets thats to do with the council.

@n0manland - on the other hand, when gangs of armed thugs forcibly take pocession of a building & the owner is no longer able to collect rent, why precisely would s/he pour money into a building? It's why some of the property is out and out abandoned. And if property is abandoned, why cannot the government take pocession of it and rehab it? I'm just presenting a different point of view, here. I really have no idea.

My opinion, take it or leave it: Expats in other african countries, consider themselves to be just that, an expat and the african country they are living is not always considered to be their home. South Africans have made Africa there home, for generations, so much so that some black africans consider the Boers to be the White tribe of South Africa, compounded by statements made by Jacob Zuma himself earlier this year.

I don't think the state of Hillbrow or the inner city of Joburg should be blamed on the ANC at all.
Who decided to abandon the Joburg CBD and areas like Hillbrow for suburbs like Rosedale, Sandton and others? Who stopped living in the city city, who stopped shopping and clubbing there, and who moved their business out to leave vacant buildings? It was the white people.

There is a distinct "tone" of those here who talk about how bad the ANC is and how bad Hillbrow etc has got .. do you remember Hillbrow before ? Home of prostitutes, drunks, poor gays who couldnt live anywhere else with safety. It's always been a place of flux and escape and hardship.
The "tone" of those here who rant is one of years long gone by .. and I guess a not very well educated lot. They only represent a small point of view.

A strong currency is not necessarily a good thing. In japan for example, the yen is very strong but the economy still isnt doing very well. A stronger yen makes it more expensive to export products. As far as I know SA is still a democracy, opposition party members arent beaten and jailedand most whites still have their farms

The economy of South Africa has been growing at a steady 6-7% per year. Of course now your economy can't be doing that well. And Israel is entirely surrounded by at least a hundred million hostile Muslims. SA will not be like Zimbabwe, of course if all people are as pessimistic as you are then it might be.

hell im lack and i would take smith to bobby mugabe anyday. RSA despite its many problems could have turned out a lot worse. Apartheid could have ended in a horrible civil war and a genocide of the whites. The economy grew at a tremendous rate under mbeki, and the black middle class is growing.

Actually a weak currency makes it cheaper to export products to other countries. For example the Yen is really stroing right now, but that isnt really good because the japanese economy relies on exporting goods, so does SA. Apartheid was basically affirmative action(on steroids) for whites.

@prepschoolkid Don't know why people are voting you down but you are right, even though the yen is strong, Japan is in a deflationary cycle. This is because they have over extended on credit with their mad house prices. Cheaper currency is better for exports, for example China and India.

I'd burn down schools too if I was oppressed. The cheapness of life is a by product of years of social oppression, where people had no money, so in order to make money they had to steal.
