My thinking is that I highly doubt they would come to Earth with billions of soldiers/robots, so tactically they would need some form of "force multipliers" in order to attack an entire planet. A conventional war of "search and destroy" just wouldn't be practical from the invader's point of view

You have to figure, odds are that there are other beings, likely far more advanced, somewhere in the univeverse. The odds that they are more advanced are very high too, especially if they have the technology to get here. If you consider how we humans treat subordinate "lifeforms", first contact may not be a good experience for us. The one hope is that they will be more advanced than us, so logic would dictate they could be more compasionate than human beings too. Or not??
