Hey, guys! Let's get it straight. Guinness is nitrogenated vs. Fermented or carbonated. There's a bit of unique plumbing involved to serve it on tap. The video is no C.G. BS. Pour one yourself and marvel at the show! Then drink something that's smoother than milk, mofo's!
It's doing that within the glass. I don't remember the exact chemistry involved, but I think that it's CO2 and a little N2 coming out of solution. It happens when you pour a stout that's being "pushed" with an N2/CO2 gas mix from a "stout faucet" with a built-in restrictor plate. Basically, the plate has tiny holes that force the gas out of solution, creating the foaming "cascade" effect. Doing it that way also gives you a creamier head. At least, I think that's right...
I'd love to find a place in the 'States that knows how to pour a perfect Guinness. Though I do like the attention I get when I'm the only person at the pub who will wait, watch and admire his Guinness before he enjoys it.. Long Live Guinness!!!
I bought a 6 pack earlier and drank them all.. THEN i watch this commercial. Now i wanna buy another 6 pack. TO GUINNESS! The best tasting beer there is!
not perfect. the glass should be 3/4 full and allowed to completely settle (as seen here) and only then topped off the rest of the way. so good try; close, but not quite.
A Stout is a beer. Beers consist of Lagers and Ales, and lots of styles in each category, some of which can be either. Stouts are Ales. Ales use top fermenting yeast and Lagers use bottom fermenting yeast, and each have different characteristics. The only reason it's dark is because some of the barley is roasted. Btw, Guinness is a light beer.
Guinness got me in to good beer, but after having so many amazing Stouts, it's like the Bud Light of Stouts (blasphemy!). Mine is better.
@ODLS1 I'd be interested in your opinion of Guinness Extra Stout. I've been drinking Guinness for years, mostly Draught. I haven't had an Extra Stout since my wife took a drink and said it tasted like steak sauce.
Night before St. Patty's Day. I feel like I used to on the night before Christmas when I was a kid. It's about time for me to head to the beer store. I am very excited.
I have been brewing my own beer for years. A stout is definitely a type of Ale. Ales are fermented at a higher temperature with a top cropping yeast. Guinness and other stouts use a top cropping ale yeast. I for one truly appreciate a good stout, especially when pored correctly.

I'd love to meet the supposedly plentiful amount of people who care about the difference between stout and ale. No wait, I don't because they sound like complete gays.
I've only seen a proper pour a few times at my local bars. Was pretty excited on my last visit to a bar when the bartender asked a different bartender to pour my Guinness. Used a two part pour, tasted wonderful.
I so agree with you, thanks! This is my big project, going to Ireland..visiting it, maybe meeting people and of course having a Guinness! =D Yes I will!
("someone handed me a guinness like the one...,i'd send it back ")
Well, I'll bet you would; however, your asking for a straw and a little umbrella is just going to get you carded or perhaps a date with the Bartender.
The only redeeming feature of putting beer into a glass in such a manner is that it does go in slowly, thus there is little chance of overflowing the beer onto the floor.
Aside from that, there is nothing to the 2-Part Pour except marketing hype.

My God No Wonder so many people think the Yanks are Stupid! I'd love to see you in Ireland telling them all this You'd get Battered Mate! Daft Sod!
What Myth? It is poured a certain way for a reason! and has been for 250 Years You Plank! No it isn't Brain Surgery but it doesn't mean there's no technique! Why would the people who made Guinness just make a load of nonsense up if you could just pour it all in one go! and why does every bar you go to all try to pour it that way! A: Because ITS THE WAY YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO IT! God you are Stupid and Ignorant!
How is it Myth? They Created Guinness and the Method of Pouring it 250 Years Ago Mate! Way Before any Marketing or Sales Techniques were around! It isn't 'Hype' it's Tradition Mate! but I wouldn't expect an American to understand as you have no sense of History! Just cause some one came up with the Idea to push the Unique way Guinness Settles doesn't mean it devalues the way it's made and the way it's SUPPOSE to be Poured!

Pouring Guinness into a glass is not a skill, rather it's just something you can learn to do.
Like turning on the Hot or Cold water is not a skill, but one day you had to learn how to do it.
If beer was that tricky to learn or if turning on the cold water was that tricky to learn, no one would be able to do it!
case-closed
AlanMolstad 2 years ago
Funny you say it isn't a skill, but very few get it right. I think you over-estimate the level of natural ability of the average person. :P
Maerokane 2 years ago 3
Well ...I mean that a person should NEVER try to say anything connected with drinking a beer is a "skill" or we are just going to look a bit silly.
Pouring a beer into a glass is just something people can learn to do.
Like turning on the hot or cold water, it's just something you didnt know how to do at first, then someone showed you, and now you know.

The 2-Part Pour is all hype
The only redeeming feature of putting beer into a glass in such a manner is that it does go in slowly, thus there is little chance of overflowing the beer onto the floor.
Aside from that, there is nothing to the 2-Part Pour except marketing hype.
AlanMolstad 2 years ago
My view of the topic?
If a guy at the bar is talking about the "Perfect Pour" and he stars going on and on , and it soon sounds to you like you would need to start writing the directions down and getting a Protractor and a Stopwatch?
It's just Hype.
It's one guy who thinks he knows something more than you do.
But all he knows is the Hype of "Beer Thinking" Doesnt matter that the Guinness Distillery supports the Hype, after all it likely sells more beer for them so why not support it?
AlanMolstad 2 years ago
Look its like this -
If drinking a beer had this many rules then none of us would be able to do it after the 1st beer.
people that talk about 1/3 of an inch?...thats just being silly
It's just beer.
It takes about 2 beers to learn how to pour one that looks good enough to drink.
They can teach kids to pour their own pop now at Subway without a lot of foam, so I think there is no trick to the skill...LOL
It's HYPE...thats all there is to the Perfect Guinness pour videos...
AlanMolstad 2 years ago
Well would you drink a Pint of Bitter/Lager with a Head that Big? No course you wouldn't you'd ask for a top up! Just Like with Guinness! The Head is Perfect at around 00:55-01:00!
Cashback13 2 years ago
Heres the deal with foam and pouring a beer.
It's NOT a skill...
I dont know if you got kids, but I do and what you then understand is that if you take your kids anyplace today for dinner the kids pour their own pops.
Now it takes a few tries for them to learn how, but they soon get the idea of how to pour a tall pop without any foam.
It's not a skill, it's more like learning how to turn on the hot or cold water.
You just learn how and thats it.
I reject the idea of the Perfect pour
AlanMolstad 2 years ago
I don't care what you "reject" what do Americans know about pouring a 250 year Old Drink Anyway! It IS a Skill because people do it right, and people do it wrong you can't just pour a Guinness from top to bottom in one go! Cashback13 2 years ago
("and people do it wrong")
When on the subject of doing it wrong and pouring a beer.
There really is only one thing to remember.
If the beer ends up "inside" the galss, its done right.
If the beer ends up on the floor , it's done wrong.
Everything else, all the rules all the angles, all the stopwatch jucn is just hype.
The "Perfect pour" is a lot like a new soap claiming to be "New and Improved!"
Its just Hype , aimed at selling more and convncing people it is "better"
AlanMolstad 2 years ago

No, its still just Hype.
It does not matter a hoot if the hype comes from the Beer Distributor.
People migh claim that a laundry soap
is "New and Improved" but thats just Hype too.
It does not matter a hoot if you went to the soap company and they also told you it was "New and Improved"
It's just Hype.
They are in business to sell, and if Hype sells , then they push Hype.
I reject their Hype.
AlanMolstad 2 years ago

No, Im saying that I have no vested interest is keeping a myth going in the hope it sells more beer
I dont have any need to buy into the Hype
In fact, Im against all the Hype
I think the Hype blinds people to being able to see things they way they are.
The way things are is that pouring a beer is not rocket science nor is it brain surgery
If it were, if drinking beer was that technical then none of us would drink beer.
Whats next, a rule so you know when you are done with a beer?

Nope its myth....its hype..
I understand that a lot of people that dont know any better get sucked into trusting the Hype, but that is not my fault...That is their fault...
Trusting Hype 100% with your heart of hearts does not make the Hype true.
It just makes the people look a bit sad...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
you actually wasted a portion of your life going to a beer factory?! ah-hahahahahahahahahahaha!

How is it wasting a portion of my life? Was one of the best things I did when I was in Dublin!

I have to agree.
The trip to see how Guinness is made would seem to be on the list of things people expect everyone to visit if on such a trip.
I do understand that the locals there consider it just another Tourist Trap, but thats fine,
They live there after all.
For people that are tourists to their country there is nothing wrong with going to a well known point of interest.
