A spell checker only notifies you of a misspelled word, it doesnt change it, and using your, you're, there, their, and they're will get your point across much easier than using them the wrong way as in: you're car is over their. (in this sense "you're" means "you are" but it is being used as your, and their is plural possessive, but it is being used as a direction)

as for your second sentence im the opposite, I use shortcuts and abbreviations around friends and family.
