  • I had a great great uncle who served with the Black Watch during the Boer Wars whose name is on the memorial to these men in Edinburgh.

  • FUCK U CHE.

  • BRITISH ARMY = WAR CRIMINAL SCUM !!!!!!

  • @Che870 Oh yes, we were. And before independence, Africa fed itself. Does it now?

  • COMPANY A FIX BEYONETS.

  • It's so rare to hear Skye Boat Song played by

    a massed P&D band.

  • i love it

  • mate it takes years of practice and hard trading and you got to know all the Scottish music and remember them all that's hard work and try and march in time as well

  • What are the tunes?

  • pipers play the pipes in battle.thats brave.

  • @dasspine58 in war on the battlefield or in a music battle? :P

  • Hard to believe that the Scotts used to march into battle just like this ages ago as the sound of the bag pipes would scare the enemy into a panic.

  • @mtman69 don't think it made the enemy scared as much as certainly giving added strength to the troops, think those pipes and drums can intensify all hell coming at the enemy certainly:)

  • Now that the snp have gracefully removed all other parties we should march to england in the good company of 10,000 pipers and drummers, the rest of us marching behind with our kalashnikovs and claymores.Of course im only dreaming.Enjoy...........

  • @ninodelbayble

Scary to know someone else "read" wrote my thoughts!!!!!!!

  • being from nova scotia hhearing the pipes always makes me think of home here in nova scotia.. but maybe someday my fiancee and i will be able to make the trip to see the tattoo in edinburgh, God Bless Scotland

  • OUTSTANDING!!!!

  • No Tom Fleming, brilliant no talking over the music.

  • I am proud to be 100% scottish. INDEPENDANCE TO SCOTLAND

  • The tune after Mhairi's Wedding is 'Rainbow Country' drumz

  • My music teacher in the early 1960s was Lt. Col. S. Rhodes MVO, MBE, Mus Bac, ARCM, formerly Director of Music of the Scots Guards (1949-59). He arranged a lot of Scottish music which is still played by pipe and military bands, including 'Garb of Auld Gaul'. I know he conducted at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 1957. He was a brilliant musician and a real gentleman, as far as I know he only ever made one musical mistake, he let me join the school choir!

  • thanks for telling me your lifestory Urangatan, perhaps we can chip in and buy your son a kilt...

  • Pathetic jock rubbish. Grow up, FFS!!! Terrible racket on the ears!!!

  • @smeggy501 Let me guess: You listen to death metal or pop music. I can play everything you listen to on the pipes. I could do it LOUDER on the pipes. And that's me, One man, One instrument, louder than your whole deathmedal band, that makes my ears bleed and it makes me want to fuck a rabbit. Besides, if you dont like music, dont listen to it you stupid cocksucker!

  • @smeggy501 why you on a pipe band video then nigel?

  • I weep like a child when I hear the pipes.

  • @TheGrunge619 yeah me as well why????

  • ALBA GU BRATH!!

  • Oh, the skirlin o the pipes eh!

  • there is nothing that warms this of Canadian heart as the sound of pipes and drums

  • tats makes me proud to be scottish

  • Oh this is stunning and just absolutely beautiful!!!!

  • what is under a scotsman's kilt , nothing its their women that have a cock and balls.

  • stirs the hearts of the Braves... Beautiful.

  • I don't think I've ever been so moved watching a video. You could HEAR Scotland and her people in that music. Rugged and beautiful, stubborn and joyous...Any American who says they hate the bagpipe has obviously never heard it played properly. This is....incredible.

  • I want to be there again.......

  • the beauty in the movement and th sound is unspourpassed. the heart fills with pride and wonderment and great love for those who went befoer use and those who will come after to keep this alive. Bless them all

  • I've been to 2 Edinburgh tatoos. I get teary eyed just thinking about them. I get teary eyed every time I hear a bagpipe. You will never forget seeing an Edinburgh tatoo in person standing in the esplanade at the castle. nothing beats it, there is no way to describe it..

  • what tunes are these?

  • @ta537 the skye boat song

  • brilliant video the pipe band im with is planning a trip up to watch the tattoo this year and i cant wait!!!!

p.s does anyone know the name of the tune after Mairi's Wedding????

  • Born in America, but forever a Scot! This summer I'm going home to the Highlands!

  • In Bale there is a Tattoo, too. The Basel Tattoo is after Edinburghs Tattoo the biggest in Europe, dunno if also worldwide. This year I'll go to the Basel Tattoo.

  • @DerBadischeGryphen GVood for You Do it!!

  • I have only experienced the Tattoo on TV but it is so amazing but I love the bagpipes and they are so in both step and tune that I only hope to experience a Tattoo one day in person...

  • Anyone out there have an opinion on RG Hardie pipes? good or bad, thanks

  • @urbankhat65

Hardies are very hard to play, imo.

You need to boil the reeds a wee bit before first use and tuning the tenor drones is a bit fiddly to the trained ear, unless you know what you're doing.

But I'd say go for it! Ive got a set of Piob Mhors from Blairgowrie, made to spec, so the reeds are a little softer. The only compromise for a lesser price, is they're just not quite as good as the Hardie.

  • not by forces not by might but by my apirit love is stronger than death

  • The parents of my maternal grandmother were from Edinburgh. My grandmother was one of the few ladies I've ever known to play the bagpipes. I love this music and I am proud to be a Scot!

  • av bin to the tatto twice is amazine 2 of the best night of my life

  • Correct me if I'm wrong - the greeks first incorporated an instrument, akin to the bagpipes, ( actually to round up sheep ) However, we scots breathed new life into this musical device, excuse the pun.

  • Someday i will see this in person. Wow. What a sight and what a sound. Enchanting and inspiring.

  • WARNING Hayley westerna starts blawin on about rule brittannia after this, so get ready to hit stop LoL. God**mn animals linking that to this what were you thinking LoL?

  • I just watched the wee afghani skit that the big yin does bloody hillarious it would scare the bejesus out of them LMFAO. I am trying to buy a cd with a studio quality rather than these cam vids with mhairis wedding on it performed by a mass band can't find it to buy. Who's silly idea was it to link this to a rule brittania pish vid? it plays straight after

  • You can see how this would terrify the hell outta somebody to see and hear this coming your way.

  • and to think that pipes were outlawed... Humans better get their shit straight before it's too late

  • That was just because Edward wanted Scottland for his own

  • hmm, I could listen to this all night. Hauntingly beautiful

  • as a scot i am so proud to see the ghurkas march on our flank, god bless

  • Ayo Gorkhali

  • yeah. They like to hit shit with knives as much as yall do. Ha.

  • i lovee dattt loadsss

  • the most beautiful sound in the world to an expat!!!

  • I saw the Black Watch here in the States a few years ago. I am an expat....and even after 25 years gone from the UK the sound is mesmerizing..from the first note to the last...

  • This is just awesome, I hope I get to see this in 2010

  • this brings tears to my eyes , i was a tenor in a pipe band but had to give it away due to being sick god i miss it so much

  • I wish I could play this!!

  • For a guy named "Angus", this IS soul music! :-)

  • All i can say is "WOW" I would love how to play pipes. And nice vid :-)

  • Beautiful, simply beautiful.

  • This really touches my heart. :-)

  • @BPSkinhead - yes it is a moving spiritual sound to hear the massed pipes and drums. There aren't many people who don't feel it. Someday I'd like to be there in person.

  • LOVE IT

  • @kyosho, effectively the UK has just one army, but theres regiments etc from scotland, england, ireland, as well as a few foreign countries, such as the Gurkhas, who are from Nepal.

  • and don't forget Australia. Just about every Royal Australian Regiment (RAR), especially with their

A Companies. have an affiliation with a Scottish Regiment.

  • I was there with my Wife on honeymoon and i wanted to take her to the tattoo, she was knocked back and wont forget that evening. There is something about having that many pipers together all playing together thats just spiritual. Can't wait to get over again to my home town and goto see the tattoo again once more, but flights from new zealand are expensive and now we have a young son, still we will take him to edinburgh to get his first kilt.

  • well said brother

  • @urangatan Its not only the pipers that are exceptional get your ear in and appreciate what the drums do as well.

Hope you make it back to edinburgh , me and missus are going thto see the tattoo. aug. 2010. all the best to you and family.

  • @urangatan My heart is in my throat...it must have been a once in a lifetime experience and you were so lucky to be there. I am certain your wee son will look very ever so fine in his tiny kilt!

  • Gilburton, you are correct but the Irsh consitution allows their people to join the U.K armed forces, there are thousands serving at the moment, Ireland, R.O.I does have its own armed forces, they are small but very well equipped

  • Something i wonder about. Does irland/scotland/england all got it's own military? I would pressume so since it's different countries, but you all go under UK. Kinda like US and it states, so yeah? Seperate, or united military?

  • Yes we are all one country except for Southern Ireland(Eire) which is independent .The army still retains the regimental system hence the many different regiments although due to downsizing a lot of regiments have been amalgamated e.g. The Royal Regiment of Scotland has been formed and many of the original Scottish regiments are now battalions under that one name. They all come under the name of the British Army. The Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force have always been single UK wide forces..

  • People from the Republic of Ireland can still join the British army the same as someone from England too. Infact more irishmen join the British army than the Irish army

  • Kitty - THAT one is Mhari's Wedding not the one at 1.06 as posted by JKHD

  • What's the name of the one that starts when "The Skye Boat Song" ends? (approximately 0:47 or 0:48)

Also, where was this? (It says when but not where.)

    Thanks for sharing, CortJestir!

    ^_^

  • I'd guess its in Edinburgh, Dunno the songs, but its mighty when they change pace

  • ryt there bemnelbub the song is called maries wedding

  • cool thank u!

  • Hey guys......whats the name of the part at 1:06........i know this sound but i cant remember how the name is -.- Pls answer thx whoever ;)

  • Hi,

    Music goes

    1. Skye boat song

    2.Mhairi's wedding

    3.Rainbow country

    4.The blue bells of Scotland

    5.Killiecrankie

    Hope this helps

  • Rainbow Country Can you supply link to sheet music?

  • I would just go out and kill just to hear them play Highland Cathedral.

  • Great video, as a Scotsman exiled in USA

filled me with pride, had the honour of being stationed at Edinburgh Castle in 1958,was there to help set up for the tattoo brought back fond memories and a few happy tears

  • I was there!!!!!!!! I wonder if I can find myself.

  • Would love to have been there, just amazing, thanks for posting

  • This is sweet nothing more then sweet

  • this is a great video!!! play the pipes myself and everytime I hear this,im proud that I play it!!!!!!

  • Brilliant.

  • Pure class, i love them the more i watch. And to whomever called the british below.... you are showing a complete lack of education on your behalf...!

  • was ist das?? Mir stehen die Haare zu berge!! Einfach geil!

  • The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is held on the left of the screen, wearing "Royal Stewart" tartan, their Pipe Major is also the "Pipe Major" of the whole of tatoo, it is, since several years Derek Potter. The player of bass drum of that regiment is the only in the British Army to wear a white cap. I don't know for what reasons. could someone say what to me?

  • The white bearskin was given to the regiment by Tsar Nicholas the second of Russia in 1894, on his becoming of the Colonal in Chief of The Royal Scots Greys (now the Dragoons), why the bass drummer wears it I couldn't find out.

  • Thank you for information, until presently, even in Scotland, no one was capable to tell me the significance of white cap

  • The honour of sporting a white bearskin is the preserve of the bass drummer of the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - marking a presentation to the Royal Scots Greys by Tsar Nicholas II in 1894.

  • Love the Skye Boat Song. Does anyone know when the Black Watch, Scots Guard, etc. will be touring the USA? I've never missed a tour since I was a kid in the 1960's.

  • My son plays drums with the Scots Guards pipe band. Unfortunately they are being called up to serve with the regiment in Afganistan later this year so are unable to tour. They will however be on live T.V on 13/6/09 (BBC) for the Trooping of the Colour. (The Queens Birthday celebration)

  • My God bless and protect your son. I'm in the US so we only get BBC America -- but I will look for the TV broadcast. Do you know when the last was that the Scots Guards toured the US? They've not been to Houston in many years.

  • Im a U.S. Soldier in Iraq right now. Thank you for your service and your son for his. We are all brothers in arms. I really enjoy listening and watching the Drums and Pipes. We had a prep Military schools pipes play at our going away.

  • Wonderful thank you reminds me of home..... Pure Dead Brilliant..

  • Something to call our own:D

  • Like it from U.S.A

  • I served along with The Black Watch when I was in the Royal Sigs. They were a wild bunch of hard drinking hooligans in peace time. Super troops during active duty.

  • I'm for the nederlands and i really love this video, play the pipes myself:D

  • Sit back, relax and enjoy.

  • Skye Boat, beautiful.

  • Thats great!

    Greetings from Germany

Churchill also Said the Americans will exaust every logical avenue, before they will come to the right avenue, America has never made a Correct decision from day 1,,,,,, your last President Bush, had a very limited, grasp of his Native Tongue English, he made America look so Stupid in the eyes of the World

  • We are still very proud of our presidents Carter and Clinton......do not judge a country on one person......or a dozen persons. I am proud to say I got to live in the UK for several years while serving in the United States Air Force. England is a marvelous country and I consider anyone proud enough to call England their 'home'....my friend.

  • Thanks friend, ignore the trolls.

  • very nice sound !!! thxxxx

  • This is why the "British" had an empire, can you imagine a foreigner seeing this and then realising they were only playing music, they must of thought if that's how they play music how do they fight ?

    Give it a rest mate

  • also when they fought it was the same ..forward no stoping plu the most scarest thing was the thin red lin e lifting there kilts and showing there bums pure scots

  • Yeah. That's what Winston Churchill said: "We shall play music for them on the beaches, we shall play music for them on the landing grounds . . . ." Actually, I think he said, "When are the Americans going to help us fight this madman?"

  • Too true, Too true..

    (these bastard Americans)

  • Devils in kilts....that was one of their nicknames

  • i think it was devils in skirts and im not sure but i think it somes from the charge of the light brigade there was also the red devils and the wooly devils

  • This is why the "British" had an empire, can you imagine a foreigner seeing this and then realising they were only playing music, they must of thought if that's how they play music how do they fight ?

  • i love the sound of it great

  • aye, too bad the Highland Regiments were so badly treated in this last reorganization, that's criminal to my way of thinking

  • Einfach klasse ,super gemacht echt wundervoll ,ein großes LOB von mir an den Menschen der dieses gemacht hat.

  • Quite ironic to hear the British Army playing the Skye Boat song.

  • skye is part of britain isnt it?? yes

  • I take it you have no idea about what the song is about then?

  • No it´s part of Scotland.

  • If you don't like pipes, don't look!

  • The music at the end sounds alot like killiecrankie can i ask if it is

  • yeh it is

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what are the guys in the first row, I mean the men with the stick in their hands? maybe the captains? generals? what do the sticks mean? thank you

  • they are referred to as drum majors. not real majors it is an appointment in todays millitary. The sticks are maces, used for band commands eg halt, stop playing, wheels, counter marches.

  • Thanks!!!

  • This video made my day. Thanks

  • man seeing the drum majors reminds me so much when i was in navy league in canada and seeing this really brightens my days but also saddens it a bit knowing theres a war going on in iraq and afghan... r.i.p canadian soilders

  • Edinburgh Tattoo is great, I loved it the last time i was there

  • The Skye song -- my favorite.

  • You got the right...its the original PsyOps maybe???...Very Impressive!!! Thanks for clip.

  • Gurkhas and pipers...terrifying combination;)

I would have run like f**k if they were heading my way 60 odd years ago:)

  • Well said! I believe that the Romans had the same reaction, hence the building of Hadrian's Wall and their steadfast decision to proceed no further. I thank anyone who posted this wonderful collection of pipe musick! lol Bob

  • i went to see this last year and i thought it was fantastic! :D

I play the Bagpipes in a little rural Pipe Band so i thought the Pipes and Drums were the best part of the Tattoo! :)

  • it's get Marie's Wedding isn't?

  • Fantastic

  • how cool is that!!! i want to move to edinburgh

  • being from Edinburgh this makes me so proud Madmay

  • I was there for the 2008 tattoo and they were just as amazing this year. I just love the effect the bass drums have on the marching. It's like they're walking, not marching, but their feet are pounding into the ground with the sound of the drums.

  • Fantastic. Why on earth is the Royal tournament no more? Are we ashamed? No, we are damn well not!!!

  • omg, sooooooooo amazing, i wish that i could play in a pnd band that big!

  • This is marching... This is not so damn boring like our silly german military marchin groups... This has style. I love it...

  • au top du top mieux impossible tres grand "bravo" impensable car c trop beau (france)
