My pleasure reading your discussion about the legion of Mr.Sze in the last century, I just got one vinyl album of Mr.Sze's performance in Asia in late 50s last month, and so no matter you are in the U.S. or Taiwan, if you wanna listen to the vinyl, just drop me an email or ring me, I'll do my best bringing the vinyl for your listening! My email: chienhuaihsu@gmail.com, and +886 987 905 460, or you may leave message here on the Youtube. My pleasure! Thank you all!!
i see a lot of compliments here. Well, I am not an expert on singing, and stuff like that. I am just wondering how many people could actually tell it is Chinese without listening very closely?? This kind of singing is never going to be welcomed in China, I mean, if the singer is not pronouncing well. People doing this should try their best in being able to make what they are saying is clearly, instead of just "musically" appealing.
If you ever listen to Bob Dylan, Neil Armstrong, Jim Crose, they are fantasti folk singers and great composers. But their voice are just unique, Sometimes I dont catch what Bob was singing but they are greatest singers of all time.
Mr Sze is a great singer, only news reporter needs clear and correct pronunciation.
Pronunciation is one importance aspect of the beauty of Chinese singing. Chinese people are used to pronunciation at the front part of the mouth, which is clearer and vibrant. We think pronouncing using the full mouth or at the back of the mouth very rude and careless. This is why western way of opera singing never gets popular in China,no matter how nice the voices are. Here in his case, he can not even pronounce! As for the singers you mention, they are pop singers, not in this category.
@fatefatefake Mr. Sze was born and brought up in Anhui. Just like many (most?) Chinese, he speaks Mandarin with an accent. That does not diminish the extraordinary musical quality in his singing. Who is this "we" you refer to in your absurd theory about Chinese pronunciation? I know many Chinese musicians and a few linguists; I have never heard such utter nonsense.
Thank you very much for posting this one! I heard Sze-Yi-Kwei sing this song in Taiwan (in 1967). Sze-Yi-Kwei was well known in the West. In 1970s(?), his recording of Brahms' Four Serious Songs won a Grammy Award; he was invited by Herbert von Karajan to sing the solo bass-baritone role in Beethoven's 9th symphony, etc. He had a versatile repertoire, and excelled in singing Chinese art songs as well. Sze-Yi-Kwei is one of the great classical music singers in the 20th century.
Thank you so very much for sharing this precious information with us.
Have you ever heard he sing "歲月風雲 三套車" ? It is in Russian. My Russian colleagues say his pronunciation is close to perfect and natural. Also, try this one, in Balaika; it's simply lovely.
Sze-Yi-Kwei could sing in six different languages. He was widely admired for singing Volga Boatman Song, the famous Russian folk song. Unfortunately, I never heard him sing in Russian, either in record or in concert.
Sze-Yi-Kweis voice was deep, resonant, flexible, sensitive, and well controlled. He sang with emotion, sincerity, and dignity.
He blended in what he learned from Alexander Kipnis, his teacher and the legendary bass of the 20th century, with his own unique musicianship.
Thank you very much for pointing out "歲月風雲 三套車" sung by Sze-Yi-Kwei. I listened to it several times.
I dont know the Russian language, but I heard quite a few Russian songs, sung by the famous Russian Bassos including Fyodor Shalyapin , Marc Reisen, etc. I agree with you that Yi-Kwei Tze sang this one with full of expression and with natural beauty. It was so well-sung! It made me realize how versatile Yi-Kwei Tze was as a great singer!!
I sang this song to an English audience when I was in form 6 studying in Warwick School England in 1972. Just hope that more young people could appreciate music like this?
Hearing this song again for the 1st time today on Youtube after so many years and reading all the comments plus your replies, I have come to the conclusion that you are a very kind and courteous person. All your friends must be very lucky. God bless you!

This was my favorite old song in my junior high school ages. And I learned it from radio and music school. Thanks for sharing. I am so touched. Thanks for your uploading. And 斯義桂 is a greatest Chinese tenor.
What a mesmerizing voice! I remember attending Mr Sze's concert in Hong Kong in the late 70's or early 80's. He is a true artist. Wish there were more of his recordings here...
Thank. I cannot remember when was the last time I heard this song? 20? 30 years ago? I recognised his voice instantly, those days we listen a song as a song only, now that I know he is Mr. Yi. Those days there was no TV, not even black and white in my home town. Listening to radio was our only entertainment, catchng fish in the stream, hitting birds with stone by a Y shape rubber band made bow, we were climbing trees and runnng down the hill then.....Thanks.
This song has nurtured many young souls in their growing in certain time of the past. A song that would stay in your memory and touches your heart every time you hear it. Thank you for posting it here.

So good to hear this again after nearly 45 years. I learned most of the basics of singing from the one record of him singing this song, 紅豆詞, 我住長江頭, 長城謠, 嘉陵江上, etc., thinking I was a bass-baritone too. Funny that I should turn out a tenor-baritone. No matter, his rich tone will always be thrilling to hear. Thanks for sharing. Would love it if you have more of his singing to share.
Dear friend, I do have one of his albums, of German Art Songs though. Should you want it, please give me your email (by sending me a message so not to be public,) I shall upload it for you to download. Regards, Chih-Huei

A Chinese folk song here sung by one the best basses! The song is: How Can I not Think of Her? In the sky, floating clouds; On the earth, a gentle breeze. The cool air blowing through my hair; How can I not think of her? The moon in love with the sea; The sea in love with the moon. Ah, on this sweet, silvery night How can I not think of her? (seond part see below)

Sorry, that the first two verses appeared twice - here is the third and forth verse:
Blossoms drifting on the water;
Fishes sporting in the stream,
Swallow, what is that you're saying?
How could I not think of her?
Bare trees shivering in the wind;
Wildfire aflame in the evening glow.
The sun still colouring the western sky;
How could I not think of her?
