  • 2:20 Vinnieeeeeeeeeee come on!!!! LOL

  • Excellent

  • It usually bugs the fuck out of me when someone hits the crash with no bass drum...

  • You won't see Weckl at a gig like this where he's not getting paid. I'm not ragging on the man but it is cool that Vinnie just wants to play on occasion and screw the consequences of a label. Hell the man is considered one of the best for playing with ZAPPA! That ought to tell! ;)

  • @chrismitchell45 -i want to know more about frank and his dad who worked for the military like most 'hippies' that came out of the military complex in laurel canyon during the sixties. stephen stills, jim morrison, hendrix, crosby, and on and on gail zappa, all had family in the freaking military, more did than didnt. check that! -mkultra monarch programming. etc.

  • a big stick of buttah

  • ROCK THE FUCK OUT OF THOSE DRUMS DALE!!!!!!!! oh sorry

  • What I love about Vinnie, beyond his jaw-dropping skill and insane musical versatility, is how passionate-TRULY passionate-he is with his playing and musicianship. You can tell that he's in it for the love of making music, and nothing else. A true artist of the drums.

  • ah yes.....Vinnie is like.....butta

  • I also checked out Paco Sery (numerous videos), and he didn't impress me much at all. He's good, but nothing superb. I understood everything he was doing, too, it just honestly wasn't that impressive. He also wasn't even that great on polyrhythms, Vinnie and Dave are beyond him in control, speed, etc. And I just know that you're gonna call me out for mentioning Carey since he's primarily a rock musician, but that just shows that Kirk isn't THAT skilled, not even close to Cobham/Weckl/Colaiuta

  • This is an amazing performance but this was the fist time iv'e seen Vinnie drop a stick.

  • WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

  • yes he dropped a stick and what? he recovered better than most drummer would ever do. he didnt fuck up, and thats what matters.

  • I've sat right over the opening in the pony wall in that same seat watching Vinnie many times. I miss those days when Matheson & the guys used to just blow at the spud. Just like Buddy, there will never be another Vinnie. Like I heard Weckl once say watching Vinnie at NAMM, "he's an animal!". So true. Vinnie is about as raw a natural talent as they get.

  • He drops a stick at 2:20. How unprofessional is that?

  • @teetomthomas lol they all do. i've seen john blackwell drop a stick.

  • @teetomthomas Your joking right? Every drummer in the world has dropped a stick while perfoming

  • @teetomthomas

If you have never dropped a stick you are NOT a professional, how about that?

  • @teetomthomas what's professional about it is that he kept going and the tempo stayed intact. there's no certainty of anything in the world, so you have to learn what to do in case it happens. it happens to professional but they know how to handle it. some even break the stick in the middle of a gig but they have their stick bag or whatever readily accessible

  • Hahaha...

  • Vinnie makes Travis Barker look like Justin Bieber.

  • smokin'

  • FUCKING MONSTER!

  • Hehe.. Good one Sith!!! I saw Vinnie at this very club... blew me away

  • lets see vinnie survive a plane crash...owned!!!

  • @odaydrums Better, he survived Zappa.

  • Travis Barker!!!

  • @odaydrums sort of only vinnie actually has skil

  • @odaydrums Shush.

  • @odaydrums you silly for saying such a statement. i hope you're joking lol

  • I partially agree with you. What makes him great is that he is great. What he plays in any given moment exudes excellence. Whether he had the ability to go between two divergent gigs or not, he's still an amazing musician on the drum set. But,yes, you are still right. He's awesome!

  • 中島みゆきの新譜にColaiutaとLandouが入ってて、おお、なつかし、ってなった!

  • Repititive and annoying

  • @MrBlakeSuarez you're an idiot what did you mean repititive and annoying? vinnie's the best drummer, if u don't believe me take a look vinnie's discography

  • @percussionmadness You mean like Sting and the Backstreet Boys? This guy is a really good drummer but considering the wide world of drummers, he's pretty much overrated. Best drummer? Hellooo, have you ever heard of guys like Jack DeJohnette, Paco Sery, Elvin Jones or for example Ronald Shannon Jackson? Vinnie might be among the best by mainstream standards but when it comes to the "heavy" stuff, he's not even in the top 20.

  • @Neidhardt84 You haven't listened to enough Vinnie. Sorry.

  • @Neidhardt84 Yeah....you seriously have NO idea what you're talking about. Vinnie's played for everybody and their mother (FRANK ZAPPA), and he can literally sightread ANYTHING you throw at him. His improv alone handily outclasses everybody you listed, no question. the only person who's even in the same league as far as technicality goes is Dave Weckl. Jack DeJohnette's good...but Billy Cobham's similar to him, and MUCH better, and Cobham would tell you Vinnie's the best there is, too.

  • @justken91 You sound like a kid who's probably listening to metal and beginning to explore other musical terrains. Putting Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl over JACK DEJOHNETTE and BILLY COBHAM tells me that you're either very young and have a long way to go or just have no clue at all. Steve Vai played for Frank Zappa also but he's not even close to the best guitarist. We'll talk in 5 years because I can't take you seriously. Don't take this as an offense.

  • @Neidhardt84 Any proper Jazz drummer would tell you the same, I'll bet I'm a more skilled musician than YOU on more than one instrument, as well as more educated. You just sound like an old fart who's clearly more biased towards black musicians. I've dissected Billy Cobham's playing further than you apparently. Jack DeJohnette has You act like there's hundreds of these guys, when really it's JUST vinnie and dave in the top two. Besides, Dave Dicenso outclasses everyone you listed too.

  • @justken91 The "old fart" is 26 and I certainly doubt you're more educated than me. I also doubt you're a more skilled musician but let's not go too personal. I don't judge musicians by their ethnicity. Jazz drummers happen to be at the top and most of them are black. Vinnie might be among the best for mainstream but he's no jazz drummer, although he has established himself in fusion. You really amaze me because I can't understand how any "skilled musician" can put Vinnie and Dave Weckl

  • @Neidhardt84 I know you're 26 (your account name), I'm just calling you an old fart cause you called me a kid. We're pretty close in age, and probably pretty close in skill if we're doubting one can outdo the other. You know music and so do I obviously, I'm already a fan of Tribal Tech and Rashied Ali as well, and even Tony Williams. I'm actually a fan of fusion, avant-garde, and jazz mostly, don't know why you said rock (Vinnie=fusion, weckl=latin jazz, bozzio=prog).

  • @justken91 God, you and your antagonist in this so called "debate" are a pair of dorks...

  • @justken91 over Jack DeJohnette and Billy Cobham. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of both Weckl and Colaiuta and have seen them live several times but they just cannot be among the best. I'm also a huge fan of Frank Zappa (how could any prog rock and jazz-fusion fan not love this guy?) but he's not the measure for music. No one is. Worshipping Vinnie Colaiuta is like saying that Jeff Porcaro was the best drummer ever. That's very immature.

  • @Neidhardt84 Vinnie has literally sightread tony William's tracks for recording and live purposes. It's just your matter of personal preference, I'm done proving to you over and over again that Vinnie's been more skilled than the guys you have named before he turned 40. Kirk Covington rides backseat to Danny Carey at his Volto shows for crying out loud, he's not even near Vinnie's league. You're just extremely biased and you keep bringing in age as a factor (immature).

  • @Neidhardt84 To be honest, Billy Cobham is literally the fourth most skilled drummer I've heard, so I'm not biased. You are. I can't believe you're an adult and you don't know that Frank Zappa recruits people like Terry Bozzio and Vinnie C. for a reason. You should take a music theory class so you can understand what they're doing, then come back and debate. "Don't take this as an offense," you just clearly don't understand how difficult improvised polyrhythms on a 7/8 pulse are.

  • @justken91 Wow, Terry Bozzio, you gotta be killing me. Why not go further with Mike Terrana and Mike Portnoy? You're pretty much focused on rock music. You should check out Paco Sery, Atma Anur, Rashied Ali, Kirk Covington, Cornell Rochester or Tony Williams, then let's talk about polyrhythms, time and style. I'm not biased but saying how it is. It's a different story why Colaiuta is so much hired, especially in America. I'm Austrian and even I can see that.

  • @Neidhardt84 Check out "Baked Potato PARTE 2" for that crazy 7/8 shit. You'll see what I mean, if you haven't checked it out already.

  • what song is this from?

  • why does he use gretsch?

  • @TheMASDrummer Because he can.

  • Super Solo Vinnie the Great!! What incredible fast singelstrokes this has Wauw , and great independence too. What can you say mater Drumming in World Class.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • lol concidering i would pay a fuckload to see this live, why does the baked potato have a 2 drink minimum?

  • man is burning, dam!!

  • great solo!!!!

  • vinnie on talk to your daughter by robben ford best drumming ever !!

  • I could do this. JUST KIDDING!

  • Yikes!

  • guy stinks

  • @neilbubbachuck your an idiot! lol

  • @neilbubbachuck probably would after playing that hard :p

  • i love you.....

  • machine gun :) nice man ..you are the my god!!!

  • what a killer vid, i watch this litterally every day

  • killer guitar riff during 2:55... killa

  • Could anyone tell me which song this is, or is it just a jam?

Extremely talented musicians alla of them!

  • This is nasty.

  • stick fall on dave weck, vinnie colaiuta, dennis chambers, davis garibaldi etc etc.

thas haps when you are super relaxed

  • ... this is 10 years old already.

  • the left stick fell !!! in the minute 2:20...but still the best

  • this is filthy!! love it!!

  • iterashai

  • he realy can hit that snare hard with traditional grip huh? pheeeew

  • Fantastic drumming - Vinnie Colaiuta has shown his great capabilities with Frank Zappa and Sting.

whuataaaaah, why should it be a problem to "hit the snare hard with traditional grip"? (Being an "asymetric gripper" myself I can tell you it is not.) :-)

  • i never mentioned it was a problem...dont be such a smartass

  • Smartass? Sorry if my post gave you this impression.

Btw: I just saw some Buddy Rich videos, and then went back to this one. Believe it or not: After Buddy Rich videos the style of Vinnie in this video, especially the left hand, looks stiff. Try it out. (No, I am not saying Vinnie plays stiff, just that Buddy looks so so cool and flowing.

  • well you are...

I not asking for your history lessons etc.

it is just a smartass attitude to asume I needed it..

I dont think my post asked for reply..

    peace!

  • I wish you a happy new year and some time to relax. Have a nice day.

    Marel

  • Buddy was a freak of nature. Vinnie will readily admit that...

  • yeah, but people new to trad have trouble figuring out how to get the power out of it for a while

  • Genius! He is amazing always.

  • i think i just nutted myself please turn to metal drumming

  • Lmao .. no way in hell. He has too much talent for that shit.

  • He already has played with Megadeth as well as on a couple of Metal tribute albums as recently as this year. Check out his discography.

This guy has played it all and fucking kicks ass every time! There's a story about him playing an entire Sting concert with only his left hand after Sting bitching him out for supposedly overplaying. That's the shit!

  • hahaha nice story!

  • I used to not like this guy, that was more to do with shit drummers name dropping him and slagging others for listening to people like Bonham. Truth is, I shouldn't of minded those shit drummers, this guy is one of the all time greats and he's a genuine guy with passion and dedication to his art.

  • Sad, Necronaut? Is that your statement?

  • Vinnie is nigh unbelievable.

  • Savage drumming...

  • Not my kind of thing normally but sounds good.

  • This is surreal, and i'm liking all the random creepy grunting! (especiallyt since i have no idea where it's coming from)

  • ha! the crowd lol i love it too

  • Amazing tequinique!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The drum set just kind of submits to him :)

  • sorta like we all do XD

  • Nice way of putting it!

  • Vinnie is the only one who has really made me rethink me playing the drums seriously !!! ; (

  • sad

  • Its sad that you don't understand how hard it is to play this ...I'm 32 and grew up on drummers like Mike Smith (Suffocation),Pete Sandoval and Derrick Roddy etc ...+I play guitar fluently as u can see in my vids /////

  • Comment removed

  • Monster.

  • Well, it IS a drum solo. He's kind of supposed to overplay but you're right, that's an unleashed Vinnie we see here...Until now, the zappa shut up and play your guitar albums remain the sickest vinnie stuff i've ever heard. check out a track called "Five five five", or "Carlos Santana's secret chord progression" if you're interested in this type of drumming. For simpler but still tasteful drumming look into his work with Sting. I love the drums on "Hounds of winter" from Mercury Falling.

  • yes positivly yes - shut up.. as I heard this stuff first time the whole record floored me. And don´t forget "Canarsie" and "the deathless horsie" also great stuff on this record.

  • @nicoides how is this guy not wearing ear plugs? i could never get away with that.

  • This was at the Baked Potato, a place where master musicians play for the peers and generally blow off steam from long days in the studio. There's a lot of one-upsmanship that goes into these performances.

  • You must be a PUP! You never saw Vinny play with Frank Zappa then. Do some research before you open your mouth. How old are you 18?

Listen to some live Zappa. F ing kids.

  • yes dude - one of my favorite records - shut up n play yer guitar. 10 year before Dave Weckl!!!

  • eh. I must have been watching a different vid as it was a whole tune and he certainly was "overplaying" - his keyboardist looked over at the end like "wtf, Vinnie?". It was a different Baked Potato performance where he was doing much more playing than listening - all the way through - unlike Vinnie - in this style of music. And for the Zappa comments - I wouldn't call it overplaying. That's just the style of the music. Apples and oranges.

  • Vinnie has a strange taste in music but he's a fantastic drummer.

  • Hail Colaiuta!

  • toca muitooooooooooo

  • 3:50 - 3:59 made me Laugh! Viennie the monster!

  • Vinnie i meant!

  • Annointed drummer. That's what Vinnie is.Not of this world!!!!Go Vinnie!!!!!!

  • We have another rrdrums on our hands...juanbarros88 is the music critic now!! Hey rrdrums, you now are in the running for the DOUCHEBAG competition!!!

  • Landau has great licks but I dont like his overall playing that much

  • And I like Landau playin´but I don´t like Vinnies overall playin´

  • Get a life man, seriously...

  • I have a life and it doesnt bother me, writing big comments sharing whatever I want doesnt make me a dead person. its not like I spend all my day in youtube. is that what you mean?

  • Its 1 of his best performances but at the same time is not. can some1 understand what im saying? it's like full of great ideas but overall the whole thing is not his best. not the best music, nor best musicians he has played w/. excuse my Eng. mayb he was trying a different approach overplaying. he usually sounds better n adds great figures as details. ppl usually thinks he overplays all the time, but to me they r just tasty details. If i were to show Vinnie to some1 This is not my 1st choice

  • 0:17-0:20 sounds funny, I dont know thats not very vinnie, maybe he did it on purpose. but then u listen to 1:33 -1:40. okay is not very sloppy. he played too much in this event, but that was probably the point. this performance is weird bcause of that n he didnt sound as clean as he usually sounds, but its full of great ideas, oh n I dont like the music that much, it sounds like playing around but I like some of the things Vinnie does in the whole event, watch it in drummerworld.

  • The thing about Vinnie is that he can play anything and if not, he learns it in a min :)

    He's the professor of drumming.

  • The thing that makes vinnie so great is that he can blow chunks at this gig and then go play with chaka kahn and have a pocket that could kill. that is why they pay him the big bucks

  • got proof...i wanna see why he so great...???

  • I got 2 words.. 7 days(search it ) , and in fact the whole album TEN SUMMONERS TALES (STING)is a testament to how good vinnie is. Also check out LOVE IS STONGER THANN JUSTICE and for another reference MODERN DRUMMER FESTIVAL 2000

  • "wat hell". You are obviously intelligent.

  • huh...???

  • i saw a video of vinnie with zappa in koln germany where he did a call and answer drum/seal call solo...delightfully strange.

  • I love his set up. It's true to the basics, but with not too many add-ons, if that makes sense.

  • vinnie is the man!!

  • A fellow musician told me that Vinnie got kicked out of Stings band because he was caught masturbating in Stings kitchen........................someone tell me this isn't true please.

  • if.... it keeps proving that sting is a fu'kin uptight dork, like everybody else btw, who gives a rats ass where folks are jerking off.... djeees...

  • I guess he was not kicked out of the band but simply left due to other engagements (herbie hancock, jeff beck, session work etc.), so it was his decision rather than sting's (or anyone else's)

  • well masterbation wit his fast fuckin hands is prob better than sex! jks

  • that sounds really creepy and i bet it isn't true, but if you're friend knows that maybe you sould reconcider said friendship...........just in case.......

  • well your fellow musician probably just wants to spread rumors..

why should vinnie be so perverted ..and even though he did that.. it's no reason to throw him out! cause he's one of the best and i guess at least sting is pro enough to keep him in the band after this cause it's about loots of money there and the band simply did well in that formation and millions of people loved it like that.

there must be another reason man, this can't be it..

  • Hmmmmmm...Must have run out of creamer 4 the coffee...

  • I hope that's not true.

  • It isn't true.

  • LoL!!! He was probably at one of Sting's wife swapping parties! Vinnie was having a wank watching Dom Miller having at go at Mrs.Sting!!! LoL Sting was perfoming tantric sex, chapter 6 on the stairs with a playboy bunny at the time!!! LoL

  • @ColdBuffetKing thats not miracle whip!!

  • recovers*

  • haha 3:49 he just pauses to scratch his nose :P

  • yeah but he choses to fill it in with the china and although it really isn't creative it's not too bad a build up lol

  • no, the part doesnt contain two hands...

  • I bet it does, I think it's cool that he's so comfortable with the part that he can just fly through it, like there was I met a session drummer who said that he worked with a bassist in a musical that knew the part so well he could literally read a book whilst doing it :P

  • I love when a drummer drops his stick and then revovers instansaneously so that it actually makes the performance better :P

  • i saw a friend drummer knock his glasses off, catch them and put them back on the end of his nose, all in one swift graceful movement and with out dropping a beat! Had he planned to do it, it wouldn't of worked out so well!! LoL

  • it s one of the best drummers in the world

  • At 2:20 he drops his left drumstick lol.

At 3:25 he starts humping the air.

At 4:08 he REALLY humps the air.

  • Instead of arguing and calling everyone names, why doesn't everybody take that waste of energy and go practice?

  • that was a kickass comment man.

  • watch this with the sound off ... check out his hands !!!

    Vinnie is RIDICULOUS !!!

    Burning.

  • you just kicked the whole community of youtube's arse there :P

  • maybe it's night time and our sisters are sleeping next door and they can still hear practice pads and you DON'T want them contemplating murdering you........hmmmm?

  • Jonescrusher..you are a name dropping b/s artist. You never have even seen the CP snare demo cause you are afraid it and the truth. Now if you want to start qouting me at least get it right. I said it many times before and again Dennis Chambers is a lost stepchild to his daddy Tony williams and his grandpa Billy Cobham as is colauta for that matter. Why anybody needs either of them when we're all still stuck on williams chambers and rich is kinda stupid. Lets' see you play that snare like cp

  • i am so fucking tired of you, rrdrums110. you're everywhere. you're arrogant and no one likes you. you pay out EVERY SINGLE VID YOU COMMENT ON. it's really making you look like a loser with absolutely no life other than to put up a mask in front of the perfect protective screen they call the internet and call yourself a drummer. i vaguely remember you mentioning something about AA? guess ur a fail at everything, huh.....get a life or die trying, loser

  • jonescrusher1.I dare you to youtube Carl Palmer snare demo and talk your b/s after. year 2006 Palmer ripping like Buddy rich for over 5 mins only playing harder 57 years old dumbass.

  • I usually avoid bashing drummers, but with Carl Palmer I'll make an exception. His playing is two-dimensional; there's technique there for sure, but nowhere near world beating. I met him once, he was a bit of a cock.

rrdrums, I vaguely remember you claiming that Tony Williams was a weak player compared to Billy Cobham. Such an opinion would seem to fit. You're an amateur. Fuck off.

  • LoL good man! An opinion not just based on technique, but on a man's artistry too. I agree. Vinnie is special. Palmer may have chops but he simply doesn't have the soul the Vinnie has. That boy is an amateur and what's more, he knows it, hence the sound and fury.

  • vinnie is such a legend.but when he played on megadeth's album,my jaw just dropped.what a great drummer!!!

  • rrdrums110 Is such an expert! What would all of us others in the drumming community do without his infinite wisdom. I'll bet you would be the greatest drummer in the world if you practiced as much as you shoot your mouth off!

  • Agreed, he makes perfect sense

  • Best living hands, Palmer?!! I'm not keen to get involved, but making such a claim in the vicinity of this kind of footage is outrageous!!!

  • Why can't everyone just enjoy the wonderful video's and great drummers. Who gives a shit who thinks who is better than who. Everybody sitting in front of their computer is a frigging expert?....Give me a break!

  • what u just said make no sense but I could still tell you're a dumbass.

  • Thank you Sticktrik....

Alas someone speaks eloquently about Vinnie.

    Hope you're well!

  • Is that Mathison over there?!!

  • now clearly my next comment is going to cause an uproar.

    but i really disliked him.

now you're all thinking im some joey jordison lover.

no, drummers i appreciate are mike portnoy, neil peart, chris adler, and buddy rich.

but this guy just looks like hes having a spasm. i think there was about 4 seconds of that video i actually liked

  • Ok.........so first of all both mike portnoy and neil peart are very OVER RATED especially neil peart cause he's known for the wrong things chris adler is just....decent and buddy rich is the shit its not about how the drummer looks
