Italy had a VERY good driver here...Elio was every bit as skilled as Ayrton Senna behind the wheel of a Lotus in 1985, but he had the misfortune to fall out with the sport's fastest rising and most touted star, whom Lotus were never going to drop.
@dazincalculation Yes, it took far too long for safety crews to reach Elio. By that time he had inhaled the toxic fumes from the fire and that is what killed him.
I am not sure if they shortened the F1 track before or after this incident.

Incredible that it`s 25 years (plus) that this great man perished. Totally avoidable just like Roger Williamson in 1973. -Daz in Oz.

@altroval I think they shortened the track after this. But that wasn`t actually the problem. It was the lack of marshalls at the track.

Prost and Mansell tried to right the car with Elio inside..but it was of no avail..
