Il y a un bon moyen de savoir si un pianiste est bon: on n'a qu'a voir s'il va traverser le temps. Cziffra, Horowitz sont des noms qui reviennent toujours en tête de liste, ici sur You Tube. Et, dieu sait pourtant, combien est énorme, le nombre des exécutants qui roulent sur la terre depuis 200 ans!! Même si je finissais 999 au palmarès des plus grands pianistes de tous les temps, je dormirais heureux!!!

Given the recordings uploaded here, these two Hungarians, Gyorgy Cziffra and Geza Anda have an amazing knack for Brahms' Op. 35, leaving various reputable pianists of major nationalities rather behind. Embarassing to learn after all this time that Brahms must have been some kind of a pure blood Hungarian, I thought he was from Cleveland, but since he composed the Hungarian Dances, it sort of figures.

Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms, were virtusosi pianists. Schumann tried to be and injured his ring finger trying to be better than he was; probably contributed to his suicidal tendencies. Liszt was the master Pianist and had all the tricks; incorporated into his compositions. Rachmaninoff and Rubenstein were also up there.

IMHO Brahms was the musician, and if you were good you could play his stuff. Cziffra is not only good, he disposes of one of Brahms' virtuoso pieces like child's play.

In many cases, when a composer tries to compose a showpiece, he forgets musicality at all (this happens with many 20th century composers). Brahms, however, was able to write something very virtuosic like this work which still sounds beautiful. The beauty of this piece is even more clear with a superb performance like this of Cziffra, one of my preferred pianists.

My God, this is a miracle. I can't believe the speed. I know how difficult this music is. He plays wide leaps as if they are half steps. I don't even know if Horowitz can play this fast. But I don't know, Horowitz is like a god, maybe he could if he wanted to.

Wonderful...quite obviously as difficult as Rachmaninov's...trying to match Paganini's

virtuosity is beyond the "ordinary" composer...
